Mt. Apo Geopark Stakeholders Unite for UNESCO Evaluation Dialogue

DAVAO CITY — Key stakeholders gathered Sunday, August 16, for the “Partners in Stewardship: The Mt. Apo Geopark Stakeholders’ Dialogue,” an important activity aimed at strengthening cooperation and stewardship of the Mt. Apo Geopark.

The dialogue brought together government officials, environmental managers, indigenous cultural representatives, tourism stakeholders, and UNESCO evaluators for discussions on the conservation, management, and sustainable development of the proposed geopark.

The program featured a Bagobo Klata ritual and tribal dance, highlighting the rich indigenous heritage and cultural significance of Mt. Apo. Officials from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Department of Tourism (DOT), and the local government of Davao City also delivered messages emphasizing the importance of protecting the area’s natural and cultural resources.

A major highlight of the gathering was the presentation of the Mt. Apo Geopark by Clint Michael B. Cleofe, OIC Protected Area Superintendent, followed by an Evaluator Feedback and Stakeholder Discussion with the UNESCO evaluators.

The stakeholders also took part in the Signing of the Commitment Wall, symbolizing their shared responsibility and continuing commitment to the protection, conservation, and sustainable management of Mt. Apo.

The dialogue underscored the importance of partnership among communities, indigenous peoples, local governments, national agencies, and other stakeholders as Mt. Apo Geopark moves forward in its pursuit of international recognition.

The activity serves as a platform to strengthen collective efforts in safeguarding Mt. Apo’s unique geological, ecological, cultural, and tourism values for present and future generations.

Globe Brings Kadayawan Spirit to Life Through “Together, Kadayawan Comes Alive 2026"

DAVAO CITY — Globe is set to join the celebration of Davao City’s Kadayawan Festival 2026 with a series of activities highlighting music, culture, community, and togetherness under the theme “Together, Kadayawan Comes Alive.”

The festivities officially open on August 14 with an Opening and Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony at 10 a.m. at Ayala Abreeza Mall.

This will be followed by a Media Round Table Discussion at 11 a.m. at Seda Abreeza, providing members of the media an opportunity to engage with Globe representatives and learn more about the company’s Kadayawan initiatives.

The celebration will continue on August 16 with the G Music Festival at 3 p.m. at the Ayala Abreeza Activity Center, bringing music and entertainment into the heart of the festivities.

Through its Kadayawan activities, Globe aims to strengthen connections with Davaoeños and visitors while celebrating the vibrant culture and spirit of the city.

Grab, RIC Davao City Federation Inc., Davao LGU Partner to Widen Digital Market Access for Women-led Farming Community

DAVAO CITY, Philippines, August 13, 2026 — Grab Philippines, the Rural Improvement Club (RIC) Davao City Federation Inc. and the Davao City Government, through the City Agriculturist’s Office (CAgrO) and with the support of the Sangguniang Panlungsod Committee on Cooperative Development and People’s Participation, have forged a partnership to help local farmer entrepreneurs reach more consumers and access new markets through on-demand grocery delivery.

Under the partnership, produce from participating farmers of RIC, a women-led federation involved in farming, livelihood development, and community crafts, will soon be available through an offline store at Agdao Public Market and on GrabMart through a dedicated digital storefront called RIC Daily Fresh.

The storefront will allow Davao households to purchase locally grown produce directly from farming communities while giving farmers an additional channel to promote their products, respond to consumer demand, and generate income.

The initiative seeks to address common barriers faced by small farming communities, including limited market visibility, fragmented selling channels, and difficulty connecting directly with consumers.

Grab Asenso: Digital Diskarte, Grab’s tech and AI enablement program for MSMEs, will also support the partnership by equipping the women agri-preneurs with practical skills in product presentation, digital marketing, order management, customer engagement, and online marketplace operations.

The learning session for RIC farmers is co-facilitated by the International Trade Centre, a joint agency of the United Nations and the World Trade Organization. The training is intended to complement existing farm-to-market systems and help farmers adapt to changing consumer habits and digital channels of commerce.

“Digitalization should not require small entrepreneurs to build every capability from the ground up,” said RJ Cabaluna. “By opening existing digital roads to farming communities, we are reducing the cost, complexity, and distance that often stand between local producers and economic opportunity. We see this pilot farm-to-market partnership with RIC and the Davao City LGU as a model for how technology, government, and communities can work together to make growth more inclusive.”

“For RIC, progress means giving women the confidence, knowledge, and decision-making power to turn local resources into sustainable livelihoods,” said Josie S. Osorio, President, RIC Davao City Federation, Inc. “We see RIC Daily Fresh as an opportunity for our members to lead together, understand their customers better, and build an enterprise that creates lasting value for their families and communities.”

Davao City Mayor Sebastian Z. Duterte underscored the importance of the partnership to the city’s farm-to-market vision. “We affirm and advance the opportunities of our farmers and producers that extend beyond supply and production continuity. It is by adopting a new marketing strategy through GrabMart – a digital storefront that allows farmers and merchants to sell fresh produce, generate income, build linkages with consumers, boost market visibility, and promote competitiveness of farm-to-market opportunities in today's evolving agricultural landscape. We thank RIC and Grab Philippines for this meaningful project, which will enable our farmers to expand their horizons, broaden their knowledge, and immerse themselves in innovative and modern marketing approaches.”

“Our role in government is to make it easier for community enterprises like RIC to grow and participate in new markets,” said Davao City Councilor Al Ryan Alejandre, Chairperson of the Committee on Cooperative Development and People’s Participation. “We will continue to support the women of RIC as they strengthen their federation, navigate local business processes, and expand their market presence. Their forthcoming space at Agdao Public Market will serve as an important physical hub for their operations, while GrabMart opens another channel for them to reach consumers across the city. By connecting these opportunities, we are helping our local agri-entrepreneurs build more sustainable and competitive livelihoods.”

The Davao City Agriculturist’s Office will provide technical and institutional support to ensure that the initiative complements the city’s agricultural development programs. “A strong agricultural system must consider the entire journey of produce, from what farmers plant to how their harvest reaches the market,” said Dr. Antonio R. Obsioma, Acting Department Head, Davao City Agriculturist’s Office. “Better market access and information can help farmers anticipate demand, make more informed production decisions, and reduce the risk of produce being left unsold. This pilot gives the city another tool to build a more responsive and efficient local food system.”

The partnership forms part of Grab’s efforts to help more livelihood groups and small enterprises participate in the digital economy. It also highlights the role of a whole-of-community approach – cooperation among government, community organizations, and the private sector – in expanding economic opportunities for agricultural communities.

CHIZ: CHANGE IN DOH LEADERSHIP TO BRING STABILITY TO UHC ROLLOUT

Sen. Francis “Chiz” Escudero on Monday welcomed Malacañang’s appointment of a new Health Secretary, saying the Palace’s action helps resolve the leadership issues that have recently hounded the Department of Health (DOH) and threatened to disrupt the implementation of Universal Health Care (UHC).

Escudero said the decision provides “much‑needed clarity and stability” for the agency, which he earlier urged Malacañang to intervene in to ensure the continuity and ex*****on of the UHC program.

“We welcome the new appointment and we wish the newly appointed Health Secretary, Dr. Edwin Mercado, all the best as he takes on his new role as the administration’s chief implementer of its health programs,” he said.

Escudero also welcomed the designation of Dr. Beverly Lorraine C. Ho as the new President and CEO of PhilHealth, saying her appointment complements the leadership transition at the DOH. Ho, the current chief health officer of Ayala Healthcare Holdings Inc., previously served at the DOH as undersecretary and was health department’s deputy spokesperson during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Ang pagtalaga kay Dr. Ho sa PhilHealth ay nagbibigay ng karagdagang lakas sa ating UHC reforms. May sapat siyang karanasan sa public health at pamamahala upang maipagpatuloy ang mga repormang kailangan ng sistema,” Escudero pointed out.

In his podcast Chiz Wiz! Usapang May Laman over the weekend, the veteran legislator appealed to the Palace to address the DOH’s leadership concerns involving Mercado’s immediate predecessor, Jose Pujalte Jr., warning that unresolved issues could hinder the rollout of UHC and weaken preventive healthcare programs nationwide.

With a new secretary now in place, Escudero said the DOH can refocus on strengthening UHC implementation, particularly in widening PhilHealth coverage and improving access for both public and private health facilities.

He noted that incoming Secretary Mercado, who is a US‑trained orthopedic surgeon with 35 years of experience in hospital management and has served as PhilHealth president and CEO since February last year, brings institutional familiarity that can help stabilize ongoing reforms.

"Ang pagtalaga kay Dr. Ho sa PhilHealth ay nagbibigay ng karagdagang lakas sa ating UHC reforms. May sapat siyang karanasan sa public health at pamamahala upang maipagpatuloy ang mga repormang kailangan ng sistema,” Escudero pointed out.

PhilHealth currently covers nearly 70 million registered members and more than 38 million dependents, or over 108 million Filipinos. During the weekend podcast, the veteran legislator emphasized that this wide membership base requires a stable DOH leadership to address gaps in preventive care, emergency response in remote areas, and uneven implementation at the local government level.

According to the Bicolano senator, PhilHealth’s financial position remains stable, saying the agency has sufficient funds to support wider benefit coverage. “Hindi kulang ang pondo ng PhilHealth. May sapat na pondo … Sistema lang talaga dapat ang ayusin para mas mapalawak ang coverage.”

Escudero told his podcast listeners that discussions on UHC and PhilHealth benefits remain extensive, including the need to improve support for barangay health workers and address long‑standing gaps in service delivery.

“Pipilitin po nating matugunan iyan. Mahaba pa po ang usapin kaugnay sa universal health care … gayun din ‘yung dapat nating tahaking landas tungo sa mithiin nating lahat na totoo, makatarungan at pangkalahatang pagpapatupad ng UHC para sa kapakanan ng ating mga kababayan,” he said.
