Book of the Month: The Five People You Meet in Heaven by Mitch Albom

Today, we begin a journey that blends the mystery of life with the beauty of human connections. The Five People You Meet in Heaven isn’t just a story—it’s an exploration of the invisible threads that connect us all.

The book follows Eddie, an elderly amusement park maintenance man who dies while trying to save a young girl. In the afterlife, Eddie meets five people—some strangers, some familiar—who each reveal a hidden truth about his life and the impact he had on others.

As you read, think about these questions:
• How do our actions—big or small—shape the lives of others?
• Can a seemingly ordinary life be extraordinary in ways we don’t realize?
• What does it mean to find meaning in the events we can’t understand?

Mitch Albom’s simple yet powerful storytelling leaves us with lasting lessons about love, forgiveness, and purpose. By the last page, you might just see your own life—and the people in it—in a new light.

For Bookworms:
Submit your answers to the guide questions on August 28, 2025, on a whole short bond paper, either handwritten or encoded, to our moderators.

“Yes yes yes I do like you. I am afraid to use the stronger word.”- Virginia Wolf, Love Letters

Yes. What the quote said. I am terrified to admit it. The idea of liking you is scary, and at the moment, I have no idea what to do about it.

This feeling is unexpected, and I could not even fathom the fact that I actually fell for you. This feeling is quite tormenting because I still don't have the courage to speak it to you. I hate to pursue this kind of feeling, so I ran away from it, avoiding it like the plague.

Like Virginia Woolf, whom I admire just as much as the author, your wit, humor, the way you think, openness, and ability to express yourself are admirable. Not to mention your beauty. I love your features, for they're incredibly unique—a sight I love to stare at.

So yeah. I like you, unexpectedly.

"All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us"- Gandalf, The Fellowship of the Ring

The pressure of maintaining good grades is intense. It feels like everyone around me is doing so well, and lately, I've been struggling. A recent low grade has really knocked my motivation. It made me feel like I was falling behind, and it's been hard to get myself back on track. I really want to do well in school because I know it's important for my future.

But I have a problem managing my time. I start out with good intentions, making plans to study, but then something always distracts me. My phone is a huge problem. I'll pick it up to check something quickly, and then suddenly hours have gone by, and I haven't done any studying at all. It's like a black hole for my time. And then there are books. I love to read, and I get completely lost in the stories. I'll start a book, and I just can't put it down. Before I knew it, I'd spent the whole evening reading instead of studying, and I felt guilty and behind.

It's a vicious cycle. I get behind on my work, which makes me stressed, and then I escape to books or my phone to avoid dealing with the stress. It's not a good way to live, and I know it's not helping me achieve my goals. I feel like I'm constantly fighting against myself. One part of me wants to succeed, to do well in school, and to have a bright future. But another part just wants to relax, to escape into a good book or scroll through social media.

I'm trying to find a way to balance everything, to find a way to be both productive and happy. I'm hoping that I can find a better way to manage my time and be more disciplined. I keep thinking about Gandalf's words, "All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us." It's a simple idea, but it's powerful. I'm hopeful that those words will continue to inspire and motivate me to make better choices. I want to succeed, and I believe I can.

“A girl doesn't need a prince to be a princess. Every girl can be a princess infront of the one she loves.” -Zhang Lurang, She’s Little Crazy

It took me a while to understand that a "prince" isn't what makes someone feel special. But now I know the right person doesn’t need to wear a crown to make you feel like royalty. It’s about being seen, truly seen, for who you are and your uniqueness. When someone loves you like that, you realize you don’t need any titles or expectations. You’re a princess simply because you’re loved for being you. And honestly, that kind of love is what every girl deserves.

While this quote may be seen through a romantic lens, I believe it also applies to any relationship where someone truly values you for who you are. It could be a close friend, a family member, or someone who loves and supports you without expecting you to be anything other than yourself. Feeling cherished and respected by those around you, no matter the relationship can make you feel like a "princess."

I'm beyond thankful for the people around me, and I will always appreciate you for making me feel like a "princess." Your love and support are what inspire me to keep going every day.

“You see, here’s my theory: Kids chase the love that eludes them, and for me, that was my father’s love. He kept it tucked away, like papers in a briefcase. And I kept trying to get in there.” -Charley “Chick” Benetto, For One More Day

I, too, chased my father’s love, longing for it deeply. As a die-hard daddy’s girl, I yearned for recognition, trying to match my brother’s accomplishments. My father’s pride in him was palpable, and I struggled to understand why I couldn’t receive the same affection. Wasn’t I enough?

I did everything to get my father’s attention, but as I grew older, our bond grew apart. The arrival of my little sister, also a papa’s girl, marked a turning point. While my father spoiled her, I felt increasingly distant and awkward. Resentment crept in, a feeling I hesitated to acknowledge.

Now, I pray that one day, my father will see me, too, with the same pride and love he reserves for my siblings. Until then, I’ll hold onto hope, cherishing the memories of when our bond was stronger and longing for a deeper connection with the father I adore.

"You just use the future to escape the present."- John Green, Looking for Alaska

I do that all the time. I keep telling myself that things will get better someday and that I just have to make it through today. But deep down, I’m scared that "someday" will never come.

I don’t know how to live in the moment without feeling lost. Maybe I’m just running from everything, hoping the future will fix what I can’t. But what if it doesn’t? What if I wake up one day and realize I’ve spent my whole life waiting for something that never comes?

I don’t want to keep running. I just don’t know how to stop. And the worst part is, I don’t even know what I’m running from. Myself? My regrets? The feeling that no matter where I go, I’ll always be stuck?

I want to believe there’s something ahead worth holding onto, but sometimes, it feels like I’m just chasing shadows.

“I have to talk to you. I have to tell you how I feel. But nothing I say will change anything, will it?”- Naoko, Norwegian Wood

To: Maeryll🙂

I know this won’t change anything, but I need to say I like you. I’ve kept it to myself for so long, hoping maybe things will be different. But I know you don’t feel the same, and that’s okay. I don’t expect anything.

I just wanted you to know so I don’t have to keep carrying it in silence. I know love can’t be forced, and I would never want it to be.

But I need you to know that, for me, you are someone irreplaceable. "If it's not you, it's no one."

Hey Bookworms 🐛,

Get ready for a fun and anonymous sharing session! We're diving into the world of "Confessions," but with a literary twist. This isn't about spilling your deepest secrets (unless they're book-related!) but rather sharing a personal "confession" inspired by a character and a line from a book.

Here's how it works:

📌Choose a Character & Quote: Think of a character from any book you've read who resonates with you (or even one you just find interesting). Select a line spoken by that character that connects to a personal experience, feeling, or "sin" (think guilty pleasures, bookish habits, etc.). It doesn't have to be a direct match, just a connection that makes sense to you.

📌Craft Your Confession: Write a confession that relates to the chosen quote. You may attach a picture as well. This confession should be something personal, but keep it anonymous! Don't reveal any identifying information about yourself. It can be funny, serious, thought-provoking, or anything in between.

Use the following format for your anonymous post:

Character: [Character's Name]
Book: [Book Title]
Quote: "[The character's exact words]"
Confession: [Your anonymous confession related to the quote]
For example:

Character: Mr. Darcy
Book: Pride and Prejudice
Quote: "In vain have I struggled. It will not do. My feelings will not be repressed. You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you."

Confession: I never thought I'd be the type to fall head over heels for someone I initially disliked. But, much like Mr. Darcy, my pride gave way to a realization of how truly amazing you are. I've tried to deny it, but every time I see you, my heart does a little flip. I admire your wit, your passion, and your [mention a specific quality you admire]. I'm terrified to admit it, but... I think I'm falling for you.

Send your formatted confession to this mail, [email protected]. We will post all confessions anonymously on February 14, 2025.

Stay Anonymous! Please do not reveal your identity in your confession or in any subsequent comments or discussions. Let's keep the fun of anonymity alive!

We're excited to see what secrets you're willing to share (anonymously, of course!). Let the bookish confessions begin!
