It is shameful to admit that I spend a greater portion of my time in deciding, adjusting, readjusting, until I'm not sure anymore if my sub headline supports the headline.

I'm talking about font sizes.

Also, the line gaps. Before, I just put it to where it looks aesthetic or "where I think" it should be until I've read about the Golden Ratio.

The Golden Ratio (1.618) is essentially a "decision-making cheat code." It shifted me from the realm of subjective guessing (which is exhausting) to objective logic (which is fast).

When we "eyeball" it, we are trying to reinvent the wheel every single time. The reason 1.618 works so well is that it mimics organic growth patterns found in nature. To our brains, these proportions feel "stable" and "correct" without us having to think about why.

If you want to stop the "adjust-readjust" cycle, try sticking to this scale for a few projects. Once you see it working, you'll stop questioning it.

Same principle applies with line gaps. Just multiply the font size with 1.618 to get the line height.

In an era of hyper-fast TikTok cuts and flashy YouTube MrBeast-style editing, restraint is often the difference between a video that feels professional and one that feels desperate for attention.

𝙀𝙙𝙞𝙩𝙤𝙧'𝙨 𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙩𝙧𝙖𝙞𝙣𝙩 is the invisible hallmark of a master. It is the realization that just because you can use a glitch transition, a speed ramp, or a bass drop doesn't mean you should.

At its core, 𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙩𝙧𝙖𝙞𝙣𝙩 is the discipline to prioritize the story and emotion over your technical toolkit.

When you first start, you see the timeline as a canvas to show off. You want people to see your "edit." As you mature, you realize the best editing is often felt, not seen.

If you are just starting out, the temptation to use every plugin in your folder is overwhelming. Here is how to develop the "inner pause" that defines a great editor:

1. 𝗞𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗗𝗮𝗿𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀🙅
You might spend three hours masking a complex transition that looks incredibly cool. But if that transition breaks the emotional flow of the scene, delete it. If it doesn't serve the "why" of the video, it’s just clutter.

2. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 "𝗪𝗵𝘆" 𝗕𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 "𝗛𝗼𝘄"‍🙇‍♂‍
Before you apply an effect, ask yourself: What emotion am I trying to evoke right now?
• Need tension? Hold the shot a second longer than comfortable
• Need energy? Use quick, rhythmic cuts, but keep the focal point consistent so the viewer doesn't get a headache.
• Effects should solve problems, not create style.

3. 𝗔𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗼 𝗶𝘀 𝟳𝟬% 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲🙉
New editors focus on the eyes; pros focus on the ears. Restraint in audio means not layering five different tracks at once.
• Give the dialogue space.
• Use "J-cuts" and "L-cuts" to make conversations feel natural.
• If you’re using background music, ensure it isn't fighting the speaker for the spotlight.

4. 𝗗𝗼𝗻'𝘁 𝗙𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗦𝗵𝗼𝘁🚫
In short-form content (Reels/Shorts), there is a fear that if something doesn't move every 1.5 seconds, the viewer will swipe away. While retention is key, constant movement can lead to "viewer fatigue." A well-placed, static, meaningful shot can act as a powerful anchor amidst the chaos.

5. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 "𝗙𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗵 𝗘𝘆𝗲𝘀" 𝗧𝗲𝘀𝘁⭐
After finishing a "final" draft, walk away for an hour. When you come back, watch it through. You’ll almost always find two or three transitions or sound effects that feel "extra." Trim them.
