The UNESCO-Philippine National Commission, through its Philippine Memory of the World (MoW) Committee, recognizes the Makinaugalingon Newspaper as the fourth documentary heritage collection inscribed in the UNESCO MoW Philippine Register (National), joining Ganito Kami Noon… Paano Kayo Ngayon?, the FPJ Film Collections, and the Bangsamoro Peace Records.

Founded and managed by Rosendo Madrazo Mejica, Makinaugalingon was the longest-running vernacular newspaper in pre-World War II Iloilo. Published from 1913 to 1941, with a brief return in 1946 and a special issue in 1952, it produced 30 volumes (2,972 issues), becoming one of the most comprehensive records of early 20th-century Iloilo and the Philippines during the American period.

More than a newspaper, it was a voice for Ilonggos — a platform where ideas were exchanged and histories were written. It bore witness to a defining period in our history, upholding the dignity of the Hiligaynon language.

Today, nearly complete bound copies are carefully preserved at the Rosendo Mejica Historical Landmark and Museum in Molo, Iloilo City, safeguarding a legacy that continues to shape our understanding of Ilonggo identity and Philippine history.
