💡 Mark Zuckerberg, a sophomore at Harvard, launched Facebook on February 4, 2004, a social media website he built to connect Harvard students. Over a thousand people had registered by the following day, and that was just the beginning. The website, now known as Facebook, quickly grew to become one of the essential social media companies in history. With over 2 billion monthly active users, Facebook is one of the world's most valuable companies.
💡 Zuckerberg built Facebook during his sophomore year of high school. He and his roommates were glued to their screens when it launched on February 4 and watched as 1,200 and 1,500 other students signed up for their website within the first 24 hours. Facebook quickly expanded from there, expanding to other schools in the Boston area and the Ivy League that spring. By the end of the year, there were one million users on the site, $500,000 had been invested by an angel investor named Peter Thiel, and Zuckerberg had left Harvard to lead Facebook from its new headquarters in California.
