Trillanes Urges Public to Back Hontiveros, Join ‘Risa Na!’ Movement for 2028

Former senator Antonio Trillanes IV has thrown his full support behind Sen. Risa Hontiveros and called on the public to join the “Risa Na!” movement as preparations begin for the 2028 presidential elections.

Speaking before convenors and members of the movement, Trillanes said Hontiveros possesses the leadership qualities needed to unite Filipinos and advance reforms. He cited her legislative track record, advocacy work, and consistent defense of marginalized sectors as reasons for supporting her potential presidential bid.

Trillanes dismissed suggestions that a Hontiveros candidacy would be a long shot, arguing that electoral victory requires only a simple majority of votes.

“The winning number is only 51%. Hindi niya kailangang habulin yung 63%. Therefore, ang kailangan na lang habulin ni Risa ay only 18%,” he said.

He emphasized that supporters should begin organizing and building momentum years before the next national elections.

“We need to start now,” Trillanes said, stressing that early preparation would be crucial in strengthening Hontiveros’ chances should she decide to seek the presidency in 2028.

The “Risa Na!” movement has been positioning itself as a grassroots initiative aimed at mobilizing support for Hontiveros and promoting her policy agenda ahead of the next election cycle.

👣 WARNING SENSITIVE CONTENT: Student Found Dead in Dumaguete Boarding House After Failing to Graduate

DUMAGUETE CITY, Philippines — A 23-year-old college student was found dead inside his rented room in Dumaguete City after reportedly becoming distressed over failing his course and being unable to graduate, police said Friday.

The victim was discovered hanging from a nylon rope inside his boarding house room in Barangay Poblacion 7 on the afternoon of June 6, according to the Dumaguete City Police Station.

Police responded to the scene after receiving a report from the boarding house owner. Investigators found no signs of forced entry, foul play, or missing personal belongings inside the room.

Patrolman Sherwin D. Yangzon, who led the investigation, said preliminary findings indicate the student had died at least a day before his body was discovered.

Authorities said the victim was last seen alive on Thursday when he paid his monthly rent to his landlady.

The body was subjected to an initial examination, and investigators concluded that the circumstances were consistent with su***de. Police said the student had reportedly been struggling emotionally after failing to complete his college course and being unable to graduate.

The victim's identity was withheld pending notification of relatives and out of respect for the family.

Police continue to investigate the case but said there is currently no evidence suggesting the involvement of another person.

ROBIN PADILLA RESPONDED TO ERWIN TULFO'S INTENSE STATEMENT

Sen. Robin Padilla's response garnered attention after Sen. Erwin Tulfo said he can arrest or remove anyone who conducts Blue Ribbon Committee hearings without due process. According to Tulfo, he is supposedly ready to "work" even Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano and he doesn't care if he has been a senator for a long time.

NEW COAST GUARD FLEET COULD RESHAPE BALANCE OF POWER IN WEST PHILIPPINE SEA

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippines' plan to acquire at least 56 new coast guard vessels over the next five years could mark a significant turning point in the long-running maritime contest unfolding in the West Philippine Sea.

For decades, Manila has struggled to maintain a constant presence across vast stretches of its exclusive economic zone, often facing larger and better-equipped Chinese coast guard and maritime militia fleets.

That imbalance may begin to narrow as the Philippine Coast Guard embarks on an ambitious modernization drive designed to dramatically expand its patrol capability and operational reach.

The initiative follows a period of heightened tensions between Manila and Beijing, including repeated confrontations near Second Thomas Shoal, Sabina Shoal, Scarborough Shoal and other contested maritime features.

Analysts say the importance of coast guards has grown as maritime disputes increasingly unfold below the threshold of armed conflict. Instead of naval warships, countries are deploying law-enforcement vessels, civilian patrol ships and maritime militia fleets to assert territorial claims.

In this environment, numbers matter.

A larger Philippine fleet would allow authorities to maintain continuous patrols, respond more quickly to incidents, document encounters at sea and reinforce the country's legal claims through persistent presence.

The expansion also comes amid growing strategic support from democratic allies. Japan, the United States, Australia and France have deepened maritime cooperation with the Philippines through joint exercises, vessel donations, training programs and capacity-building initiatives.

Observers note that while 56 additional vessels will not immediately match China's vastly larger coast guard fleet, the program could significantly improve Manila's ability to defend its maritime interests and challenge attempts to alter the status quo.

The effort represents more than a procurement project. It reflects a broader recognition that maritime security has become central to Philippine national security, economic development and resource protection.

Whether the expansion ultimately shifts the balance of power in the West Philippine Sea remains uncertain. However, analysts agree that the Philippines is entering a new phase in which sustained maritime presence, rather than occasional patrols, is becoming the cornerstone of its strategy.

As competition intensifies across the South China Sea, the success of the modernization effort may help determine how effectively Manila can protect its sovereignty and maritime rights in the years ahead.

AirAsia Philippines says operations normal, denounces 'smear campaign'

Manila, Philippines — AirAsia Philippines said Friday that its operations remain fully functional and that flights continue as scheduled, while accusing unnamed parties of orchestrating a campaign to undermine competition in the country's aviation sector.

In a statement, the low-cost carrier assured passengers that services across its network were operating normally, subject only to routine factors such as weather conditions and standard operational considerations.

The airline's parent company, AirAsia Group, said it viewed what it described as "coordinated and sensationalised reports" as part of a long-running effort to damage the carrier's reputation and weaken competition in the Philippine market.

"Such narratives serve only the interests of those seeking to limit consumer choice and create conditions that could lead to a monopoly in the market," the company said.

AirAsia argued that reduced competition could result in fewer travel options and higher ticket prices for consumers.

Tony Fernandes, co-founder and adviser of AirAsia Group, reaffirmed the airline's commitment to the Philippines, where it carries nearly seven million passengers annually.

"AirAsia has long championed affordable travel and will continue to stand firmly against any development that harms consumers or restricts access to air connectivity," Fernandes said.

He added that the airline remained deeply invested in the country and had played a significant role in expanding access to air travel over the past decade.

"For over a decade, we have played a key role in democratising air travel, making flying accessible to millions of Filipinos who may not otherwise have had the opportunity to travel by air," Fernandes said.

AirAsia Philippines has grown into one of the country's major budget carriers, serving domestic and international destinations and competing with larger players in the aviation industry.

The company did not specify which reports it considered part of the alleged campaign, nor did it identify the parties it believed were behind the effort.

The statement comes amid heightened competition in the Philippine airline sector as carriers seek to expand routes and attract travelers in a market recovering from pandemic-era disruptions.

PAGASA WARNS OF HEAVY RAINS AS TROPICAL DEPRESSION ESTER ENHANCES HABAGAT

The Philippine weather bureau on Friday warned of heavy rainfall across parts of western Luzon as Tropical Depression Ester continued to strengthen the southwest monsoon, locally known as “habagat,” raising the risk of flooding and landslides in several provinces.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said Ester remained over the West Philippine Sea but was significantly enhancing monsoon winds that were drawing moisture toward western sections of the country.

Weather forecasters said moderate to at times intense rains were expected over Ilocos Region, the Cordillera Administrative Region, Zambales, Bataan, Pampanga, Bulacan and other areas along the western seaboard of Luzon.

PAGASA warned residents in low-lying and mountainous communities to remain vigilant against possible flash floods, river flooding and landslides, especially in areas that have already experienced prolonged rainfall in recent days.
“The public and local disaster management offices are advised to monitor the latest weather bulletins and take appropriate precautionary measures,” the agency said.

Satellite imagery showed extensive cloud formations associated with Ester west of Luzon, while rain-bearing clouds linked to the enhanced monsoon continued to spread across large portions of the country.

Although Ester was not expected to make landfall, meteorologists said its circulation was helping intensify the southwest monsoon, a seasonal weather system that typically brings heavy rains during the country's wet season.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) and local government units were placed on heightened alert as authorities monitored vulnerable communities for possible weather-related emergencies.

The Philippines experiences around 20 tropical cyclones annually, with storms often triggering floods, landslides and disruptions to transportation, agriculture and public services.

Affordable Housing Project Opens in Lipa City, Targets OFWs and Local Workers

LIPA CITY, Batangas — A new residential housing development in Lipa City is offering ready-for-occupancy units aimed at overseas Filipino workers, self-employed individuals and locally employed residents seeking affordable homeownership options in Batangas.

The project, called “Ecoverde Lipa,” features townhouse-style units with three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a living area, dining area, kitchen, service area, carport and porch. The homes are being marketed as fully finished units complete with tiled flooring, painted interiors, partitions, LED pin lights and gated fencing. Developers are also offering free kitchen cabinets for buyers.

Located near commercial and educational establishments including SM Lipa, De La Salle Lipa and Robinsons Lipa, the housing development is positioned as accessible to transportation hubs, schools and business centers.

Project representatives said buyers may avail themselves of financing through the Pag-IBIG Fund, bank financing and deferred payment schemes. The developer also said applications may still be processed for clients with inactive Pag-IBIG memberships or existing loans, subject to approval requirements.

Additional housing options are also being offered, including single-attached units near the subdivision’s amenities area and premium units with an extra ground-floor room.

The project is part of the growing residential expansion in Batangas, where demand for affordable housing continues to rise amid increasing urban development and migration from Metro Manila.

Real estate agents handling the project said site visits and online property tours are available for interested buyers.

The project advertisement lists PRC Registration No. 369 and DHSUD Registration No. 14780.

PHILIPPINES MOVES TO BUILD FIRST STRATEGIC PETROLEUM RESERVE UNDER NEW ENERGY SECURITY FRAMEWORK

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippines is moving to establish its first systematic strategic petroleum reserve program in a major policy shift aimed at shielding the economy from volatile global oil markets and geopolitical disruptions, the Department of Energy (DOE) said Friday.

The initiative, to be developed under a newly established framework called the Partnership On Wide Energy and Resources Resilience Asia (POWERR Asia), seeks to create a national oil stockpiling mechanism through cooperation with foreign state institutions and private commercial entities.

Energy officials said the plan reflects Manila’s growing concern over supply chain vulnerabilities exposed by global conflicts, shipping disruptions and fluctuations in international crude prices that have repeatedly strained the country’s import-dependent economy.

“The objective is to strengthen long-term energy resilience and ensure the country has adequate fuel reserves during periods of severe supply disruption,” the DOE said in a statement.

Unlike several neighboring economies that maintain strategic petroleum reserves as part of national security planning, the Philippines has historically relied heavily on imported fuel purchased through spot-market transactions, leaving it vulnerable to sudden price spikes and logistical bottlenecks.

Officials said the POWERR Asia framework would allow the government to pursue collaborative stockpiling arrangements while encouraging private sector participation in the development of storage infrastructure, reserve facilities and emergency fuel inventories.

The DOE said the reserve system is intended not only to stabilize domestic supply during crises but also to cushion the impact of geopolitical shocks, including conflicts affecting major shipping routes and oil-producing regions.

The Philippines imports the vast majority of its petroleum requirements, making it highly exposed to global market swings. Energy analysts have repeatedly warned that disruptions in key maritime chokepoints, such as the Strait of Hormuz or the South China Sea, could significantly affect domestic fuel availability and inflation.

The planned reserve program is also expected to support broader economic stability by helping mitigate sudden increases in transportation and electricity costs that ripple through consumer prices.

Officials did not immediately disclose the projected size of the reserve, funding arrangements or timelines for implementation, though consultations with foreign partners and industry stakeholders are expected to begin in the coming months.

The initiative comes as governments across Asia intensify efforts to strengthen energy security amid increasing geopolitical tensions and concerns over the resilience of global supply chains.

DOE officials said the Philippines aims to develop a more “resilient and secure energy future” through diversified partnerships, expanded storage capabilities and improved emergency preparedness measures.

Jellyfish swarms alarm beachgoers in Philippine tourist island

Swarms of jellyfish have alarmed beachgoers on the popular central Philippine island of Panglao, prompting authorities to warn the public against swimming in affected coastal areas during the hot dry season.

Residents and tourists reported large numbers of jellyfish along the shoreline of Barangay Bil-isan in Panglao town, Bohol province, on May 25, with photos and videos spreading widely on social media.

The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) said people stung by jellyfish should immediately seek medical attention, warning that severe stings could cause extreme pain, breathing difficulties, and in rare cases prove fatal.

“More jellyfish swarms are seen during the dry season,” BFAR Bohol chief Cabdido Samojor said, adding that rising temperatures and calm sea conditions may contribute to the phenomenon.

Authorities advised the public to temporarily avoid beaches where jellyfish have been sighted, especially during periods of intense heat.

Samojor urged swimmers and tourists to stay away from coastal areas known for jellyfish presence until conditions improve.

Several coastal communities across Bohol have also reported sightings in recent days, dampening enthusiasm among some residents and tourists planning beach outings at the height of the summer season.

Panglao, known for its white-sand beaches and diving spots, is one of the Philippines’ most visited tourist destinations, drawing thousands of local and foreign visitors every year.
