Parang lately, ang daming gustong mag-freelance.

Kapag nalalaman nilang “Virtual Assistant” or “Freelancer” ka, laging may kasunod na:

“Sarap naman ng trabaho mo.”
“Sana all nasa bahay lang.”
“Petiks ka lang siguro.”

Maganda siyang pakinggan, oo.
Pero minsan gusto kong sumagot ng “Kung alam niyo lang.”

Kung alam niyo lang yung hirap nung nasa learning phase pa lang kami.
Yung sabog sa kakahanap ng tamang resources. Yung trial and error. Yung puyat kakanuod ng tutorials.
Swerte mo na lang talaga kung nag-start ka sa agency, may mentor ka, may friend na willing mag-guide, o may nag-outsource sayo.

Kung alam niyo lang yung hirap maghanap ng client.
Yung ilang application na walang reply.
Yung ilang interviews na di pumasa.
Yung ilang beses na nag-adjust ng rates para lang magka-experience.

Swerte ka kapag may nag-refer sayo.
Swerte kapag may nag-outsource.
Swerte kapag si client mismo ang nag-reach out.

Kung alam niyo lang na hindi siya stable.
Pwede kang mawalan ng client anytime.
Pwede kang palitan bigla.
Pwede kang masulutan.
Pwede kang hindi na kayang bayaran.

Walang “security of tenure” dito.
Anxiety is real.
Kaya kailangan matuto kang pumili ng maayos at maghanda lagi sa worst case scenario.

Kung alam niyo lang na kailangan namin ng multiple clients,
hindi dahil greedy kami,
kundi dahil kailangan may backup.

Kung alam niyo lang na hindi lang ito basta “work from home.”
Nag-invest kami sa laptop.
Sa internet.
Sa software.
Sa courses.
Nag-ipon.
Nangutang.
Nagsakripisyo.

Yung iba, swerte may nagbigay.
Yung iba, nanghiram muna.
Yung iba, nagsimula sa halos wala.

Hindi siya madali.
Hindi siya petiks.
Hindi siya instant.

Pero pinipili pa rin namin araw-araw.
dahil sa freedom,
dahil sa growth,
at dahil sa pangarap.

So next time na marinig niyo na “Freelancer lang nasa bahay,”
sana maalala niyo rin.

Hindi lang kami basta nasa bahay.
Nasa laban din kami.
