Rasa Island Most Popular Atraction and Destination In Palawan Philipines Tourism

The conservation efforts on Rasa Island paid off as the island sanctuary was recently named as one of the top 13 birdwatching sites in the Philippines. Rasa Island Wildlife Sanctuary holds probably the densest population of the critically endangered Philippine cockatoo Cacatua haematuropygia in the wild! In July 2008, the cockatoo population for the first time since project implementation in 1998 passed the 200 individual mark. Rasa Island was declared Wildlife Sanctuary through Presidential Proclamation 1000 in 2006. The small coral island is not only the core habitat of the Philippine cockatoo, but also of other globally threatened or near-threatened bird species. Rasa is located in Narra, Palawan. The municipality is now called the “World Capital of the Philippine Cockatoo”. Rasa Island is the pilot site of the Philippine Cockatoo Conservation Programme (PCCP) under the Katala Foundation.

The DOT is promoting birdwatching as an alternative activity that could promote the Philippines both locally and abroad under its Adventure Philippines Campaign. DOT Secretary Joseph “Ace” Durano recently launched the first volume of a guidebook called “Birdwatching in the Philippines” which featured Rasa Island. This is also part of the worldwide promotion that the DOT is undertaking to show to both Filipino and foreign wildlife enthusiasts the various birdwatching destinations in the Philippines. Other top birdwatching spots covered in the DOT’s “Birdwatching in the Philippines” project are Mt. Makiling in Los Baños, Laguna; Subic Bay in Zambales; Candaba Marsh in Pampanga; Northern Sierra Madre Nature Park in Cagayan; St. Paul’s National Park in Puerto Princesa, Palawan; Olango Island Wildlife Sanctuary in Cebu; Rajah Sikatuna National Park in Bohol; Mt. Kitanglad in Bukidnon and Mt. Apo National Park in Davao. The record shows that more than 600 bird species are identified throughout the Philippines in which 200 of them are endemic to the country.
Rasa Island a spectacular island haven, the sanctuary is home to 87 unique bird species, including the Palawan hornbill. Tours also include visits to waterfalls and mangrove forests. Overnight in clean but simple dwellings in the town of Narra possible. Three hours from Puerto Princesa to Narra, followed by a 30-minute boatride to Rasa Island.

Reports state that San Isidro, Narra, which is in front of Rasa island, will be the location of a Coal-fired Power Plant. The Semirara Island Coal Mine in the province of Ilo-ilo which is currently suspended because of the recent landslide tragedy supplies the coal. Go visit the island now before the coal-fired power plant fumes turn the Katala (Phil. Cockatoo) into gray.

Narra: Fascinating Estrella Falls

Before returning to Puerto Princesa I thought of wandering for a while in some spots in Narra. And the trip would never be complete without visiting Estrella Falls. It is a popular swimming place because it is readily accessible by the locals and also by the tourists. From the highway, you will be taking a five kilometer dirt road and there’s not much trekking that needs to be climbed. From the route you can see the Victoria’s Peak which is one of the highest mountain.

After more than twenty minutes we reached the entrance of the resort and paid PhP30 per head. From the entrance we walked 300 kilometers to reach the falls. As we neared the falls we can hear the waters falling from the falls.

The falls are separated by a large boulder (that’s why it is sometimes called the twin falls), but during rainy season the separating rock is sometimes inundated. The drop point is deep and we were advised never to go there. The water flows from the mountain, so expect it to be cold (very cold). According to Ms Desa, the tourism officer assigned here, there are 64 other waterfalls but you need to climb the mountains for four days to see them all. The trek is open to those interested and a guide will be assigned.

The flowing waters are cascading to the natural pools which have varying depths. At the bottom of the waterfalls is a large pool which can be bathed. Hanging ropes were also installed where anyone can hang and swing like Tarzan. There is a sign forbidding the drunk from rope hanging as someone said to have drowned because of it. There are cottages, shower room, picnic area and guest houses to those who want to stay overnight. The development of this resort is great as it gives a feeling that you’re still in a forest. The environment is clean, refreshing and (always, we’re told) there are troop of monkeys seen playing here.

Take Puerto Princesa South Road going to Narra. Before reaching the town you will be passing by Bgy Malatgao. Turn right at the junction and go straight until reaching Estrella Village Welcome arc. From here, there are signages that points to the waterfalls. Or you can ask the locals to be sure.
Commute:
Take a van going to Narra and alight at Bgy Malatgao (You can also ask the driver to take you to Malatgao or to Estrella Falls). There is a large sign that can be seen on the highway. Take the tricycle and tell the driver to take you to the falls. You can also ask them to fetch you back.

Narra, officially the Municipality of Narra (Tagalog: Bayan ng Narra), is a 1st class municipality in the province of Palawan, Philippines. According to the 2015 census, it has a population of 73,212 people.[3]

Besides spelling out the local name for the Pterocarpus indicus—the Philippines' national tree—it is an acronym for National Resettlement Rehabilitation Administration. This program, established on June 18, 1954, resettled landless people from Luzon to Palawan. On June 21, 1969, the Municipality of Narra was created by virtue of Republic Act No. 5642 signed by President Ferdinand Marcos.[5]

Having a title as "The Rice Granary of Palawan" Municipality of Narra is the main rice producer of the Province of Palawan. The municipality also held "Palay Festival" (Formerly called as "Anihan(Reaping) Festival") held every middle or end week of the October.

Narra also includes Rasa Island, home of the endangered endemic cockatoo species called "Katala or Abukay or Kalangay (depends on local dialect)" or Philippine red-vented cockatoo (cacatua haematuropygia) and other rare animal species.
