Masbate's Ticao Island Offers Triple Treat - Shared Jan 22, 2022
Looking for a memorable experience this year? Enjoy a triple treat in Ticao island!

First is the Altamar Resort, which is owned by the family of the former mayor of the San Jacinto town -- the Altarejos family.

This serene place was built as a family rest house during reunions but in early 2000, the Altarejos family decided to open the place to the public since it is one of the most visited resorts in Ticao.

It features a huge yellow bungalow castle, which is not a part of the resort service and is exclusively for the family.

For the convenience of those who want to spend the night in that peaceful place, the Altarejos family built air-conditioned cottages with two beds each.

The caretaker of this place keeps the homey ambiance of the place as this is what the owner wants.

Some of the activities offered in the resort are horseback riding, snorkeling and island hopping.

If you don’t know how to swim, or if you’re afraid to go tan, you can still enjoy the sea by watching the coral reefs and fishes without even diving into the water.

The resort also has a mini-zoo for animal lovers while its fine white sand of the island is perfect for bonfires at night.

The place abounds with Talisay tress, flowering plants and coconut trees.

Another great place to visit is the San Miguel Island that sparkles with its white sand, green trees and blue clear sea water.

But what make this island unique are the natural blocs of stones forming a pyramid.

San Miguel is located in the municipality of Monreal where the Alibata (the first writing system used by our ancestor) was found.

A third place to see is Matang Tubig which has a cool blue water, attracting so many people who choose to spend their time there during hot season.

It is said that the name Matang Tubig came from the word ice water.

The place is a bit far from the San Jacinto town proper as it will take almost 15 minutes to be there.

It is a spring in the middle of a forest, covered by big trees; nevertheless, this cold spring is still one of the hottest tourist spots in the locality.

Ticao Island is where one can see birds flying from branches of the big trees.

If you’re thinking about the budget, the places to visit are not expensive.

Approximately, you would only be spending Php150 for the bus fare from Legazpi City to Bulan, Sorsogon, and another Php120 for the boat ride from the port of Bulan to the port of San Jacinto and vice versa, yielding a total transportation cost of only about Php600.

There are cheap hostels that cost around Php200 per night while there are also hotels that cost about Php1,500 per night.

Come to Ticao Island -- and experience a triple treat! (PNA) CTB/FGS/Therese Vega/CBD/rsm

10-STEP GUIDE
How to sustainably interact with manta rays, wherever you are in the world.
(resource: https://swimwithmantas.org/)

1.Enter the water quietly and calmly, no closer than 10 meters / 33 feet from the manta ray.

2. Keep your fins below the water's surface when swimming. Splashing and noise can scare mantas away, so you want to approach the manta as quietly as possible.

3. Do NOT approach closer than 3 meters / 10 feet. Instead, remain still and let the manta come to you.

4.You should approach the manta from their side, giving them a clear path ahead.

5. As the manta swims past you, do NOT chase after them! You will never catch up to a manta anyway, and will likely scare them away in the process.

Tomorrow, we share the rest of the recommended best practices in sustainably interacting with the graceful Manta Rays.

Today we share with you the rest of the 10-STEP GUIDE:
How to sustainably interact with manta rays, wherever you are in the world.
(resource: https://swimwithmantas.org/)

6. Do NOT touch a manta ray. You will ruin the encounter and may receive a fine depending on local laws.

7. For scuba divers only. Chances are if you are diving with a manta, you will be encountering them on a cleaning station. These are important sites for manta rays.
During the encounter, remain at the side of the cleaning station. Do NOT swim onto the main cleaning area.

8. For scuba divers only. Keep low and hover close to the seabed, but be careful not to damage the reef beneath you. Depending on the dive site, you may need to stay in an area designated for divers.

9. For scuba divers only. When a manta swims towards you, do NOT block their path as they swim overhead. Stay low and stay where you are.

10. In addition to the above steps, be sure to follow any extra rules, laws and regulations that may be specific to the manta site you're visiting.

But manta tourism needs to be sustainable. Mantas are very sensitive to disturbance, and if left without proper measures, tourism has the potential to do more harm than good. There have been occasions where uncontrolled human interactions have negatively impacted local manta populations, driving them away from important areas where they clean, feed or breed. These guidelines outline how divers and snorkelers should behave in-water, to both enhance their experience and to ensure their presence does not disturb the mantas they encounter.

MONREAL's best Island Adventure

Biyernes, Marso 25, 2011
THE BEAUTY OF TICAO ISLAND, MASBATE

The islands of Masbate were formed out of volcanic rocks over one hundred million years before man made his appearance in the tropical regions of the earth. Humans then made tools of stone, bone, and wood. Some of these very early stone stools and bones have been found in Masbate.

The island of Masbate lies exactly at the center of the Philippine archipelago between latitudes 11o43’ north and 123o09’ east and 124o5’ east. It is bounded on the north by Vurias and Ticao Pass, east by San Bernardino Strait, south by the Visayan Sea, and west by the Sibuyan Sea. Relative to mainland Bicol, the province faces the southwestern coasts of Camarines Sur, Albay, and Sorsogon.

Clinging at the western tip of Ticao Island, MOnreal takes pride of its islets which are like moles of the sea beckoning to the eyes, naturally implanted like sentinel guards ready to parry the onslaught of big waves that may whiplash its pristine white sand shorelines. its verdant hills and mountains leering the shores from a distance pour in an atmosphere of peace and serenity creating a quiet and livable place that is Monreal. The richness of its natural treasures, foremost of which are the "Matang Tubig Spring", source of potable water, the giant Manta Rays, the San Miguel, Cagpating, Odoc and Burubangkaso Islands, Lapus-Lapus and Halea Beaches and unexplored caves of Panursugon, Natunawan and Bojo Caves, promise so much for the adventurous and nature-lovers. Monreal's natural beauty is there to stay, for one to behold, admire, enjoy and cherish.

Matangtubig Spring
is a unique spring with three sources. The spring comes out of a rock. Tree and lush vegetation give shade in the area around the spring. Matang Tubig Spring is one of the best place to visit especially when summer because it has a cold water and it can remove intoxication. It is also the source of potable water in the community. In the left side of the spring is a falls which you can also take a dip and on the front is a water come from falls that the Monrealiños use it for washing clothes.

San Miguel Island
is the host to perhaps the only remaining coral reef within a 3-hour radius of the town of Monreal. It is host to rare and endangered species such as the coconut crab, a much sought table delicacy that must now be protected from human consumption.

Cagpating Island
noted for its crystal-clear waters and beautiful pebbles on one side and a deep rocky side that provides a panoramic view of Masbate Island.

Monreal, Masbate is one of the best beaches here in the Philippines because it has a beautiful beaches with white sands, blue sea and beautiful coral reefs that the divers will love to watch. It has also best Filipino foods especially sea foods that you will love most. It is also safe from threats of floods because Ticao Island and the western and central parts of mainland Masbate are covered by a climate characterized by no very pronounced maximum rain period, with a short dry season. The southeastern parts have rainfall more or less evenly distributed throughout the year. Masbate has the lowest average annual rainfall distribution in Bicol.

Experiencing 3 ISLANDS in a Day: Ticao Island, Masbate, Philippines

📍Ticao Island, Masbate, Philippines
Masbate Province dubbed as Rodeo capital of the Phillipines because of the cattle raising way of life, is also rich in marine life & island hoppings. The highlight of the tour is Ticao island.
Ticao is one of the three major islands of Masbate province, along with Burias & Masbate Islands. 🏝️ The island hopping is not easy but its worth the effort, the adventure includes:
🌴Catandayagan Falls
🌴Borobancaso Islet
🌴Halea Nature Park
How to get there?
📌By Masbate proper: Ride a jeepney going Pilar. There are daily trips going to Pilar, Sorsogon (the fare is Php 80.00), tell the driver to drop you off at the Pilar Port, then book on a 4-hour ferry vessel ride to Masbate City Port. When land on Masbate port, visit the provincial tourism center to ask for accommodation on the said Island hopping.
📌Pilar Proper: It is a whole day island hopping, starting point will be in Pilar port to Ticao Island (Lasting 2 to 3 hours boat ride). I contacted the owner of the outtrigger boat which can accommodate atleast 30 pax. But due to safety protocols we are only 20 pax, while going to the first island which is Catandayagan Falls we lasted only about 30-45 mins to take pictures & swim a little, next is Borobancaso Islet where you can find the rock formations, there is no entrance fee except Halea Nature park (Php 25.00/per head & 200.00/boat & 100.00/cottage). Halea Nature park was the final destination, it should be San Miguel island but the weather was not in good condition so we decided to end it in Halea. Then going back to Pilar port from ticao (it was exactly 5:00 o'clock in the afternoon). I recommend that you should leave Pilar port at 5 o'clock in the morning so you can have more time to enjoy each island because unfortunately we left 7:30 in the morning that's why we only visited atleast 3 of them.
