Swim with 5 sea giants in their natural environment

Okay, maybe not the best picture quality, but hey, we saw 5 (in numbers five) whale sharks live! It was really a unique experience to be able to swim with these sea giants in their natural environment. We felt we would like to glide through the water so gracefully.
In the late morning we drove together with eight other snorkelers and two researchers to southeast Sogod Bay. On the way we picked up a few spotters (local fishermen with their outrigger kayaks) who, as the name suggests, should look out for the whale sharks - the engine of our diving boat would only irritate them unnecessarily. We also got a brief introduction to what we should and should not do during a sighting (e.g. keep at least 3m away). The spotters hadn't even come off the rope when we saw the first whale shark in the shallow water. How lucky we were! So quickly put the gear on and “JUMP!”. And then it was time to go swimming. Five times. 💙

Okay, vielleicht nicht die beste Bildqualität, aber hey, wir haben 5 (in Zahlen f ü n f) Walhaie live gesehen! Es war wirklich ein einmaliges Erlebnis, mit diesen Meeresriesen in ihrer natürlichen Umgebung schwimmen zu können. Gefühlt würden wir dabei auch gerne so anmutig durch‘s Wasser gleiten. 🤭
Am späten Vormittag fuhren wir gemeinsam mit acht weiteren Schnorchlern sowie zwei Forscherinnen in die südöstliche Sogod Bay. Auf dem Weg gabelten wir noch einige Spotter auf (einheimische Fischer mit ihren Auslegerkayaks), die, wie der Name schon verrät, Ausschau nach den Walhaien halten sollen - der Motor unseres Taucherbootes würde sie nur unnötig irritieren. Außerdem bekamen wir noch eine kurze Einführung, was wir bei einer Sichtung zu tun und zu unterlassen hätten (z.B. mindestens 3m Abstand halten). Angekommen waren die Spotter noch nicht einmal vom Seil losgelöst, als wir schon den ersten Walhai im seichten Wasser ausmachten. Was für ein Glück wir hatten! Also schnell die 🤿-Ausrüstung an und „JUMP!“. Und dann hieß es schwimmen was das Zeug hält. Ganze fünf Mal. 💙
