Whale sharks: what science reveals

We round up eight years of LAMAVE’s research on the iconic whale shark

The whale shark – also called butanding, tuki, tiki tiki, tawiki in local dialects - is a national icon of the Philippines. As we reach the end of 2019 and almost 8 years since LAMAVE first started studying whale sharks in the Philippines, we round up what we have learnt about these incredible sharks.

What we know about whale sharks in the Philippines
The Philippines is globally significant for whale sharks. The country hosts the second largest known population of whale sharks in the world;

More than 1800 individual whale sharks have been identified by LAMAVE, WWF-Philippines and citizen scientists to date;

Safe to say that we got pretty lucky, swimming with not one but two whale sharks last weekend! Watch carefully to see if you can spot the tiny yellow fish - a juvenile golden trevally that is swimming right in front of the mouth of one of them.

Unlike in other parts of the Philippines, in Pintuyan they are not fed, so the sharks can be observed naturally filter feeding in the plankton rich waters.

Triaenodon obesus - whitetip reef sharks, you can see them daily in Napantao as you can see thresher sharks everyday in Monad Shoal in Malapascua Island, Logod, Daanbantayan, Cebu, Philippines

The whitetip reef shark (Triaenodon obesus) is a species of requiem shark, in the family Carcharhinidae, and the only member of its genus. A small shark does not usually exceed 1.6 m (5.2 ft) in length, so this species is easily recognizable by its slender body and short but broad head, as well as tubular skin flaps beside the nostrils, oval eyes with vertical pupils, and white-tipped dorsal and caudal fins.
