Street photography is essentially all about people and everyday life, a social documentary through pictures, usually candidly taken up close. It need not be on the streets itself; it can be taken wherever people are. The best equipment is something you can take anywhere and use quickly, hopefully innocuously, when the moment arrives. A small pocketable camera is particularly useful and less intimidating to the subject compared to a large SLR with a long telephoto lens. The more recent cellphones that have very good built-in lenses and software also come in pretty handy. Seize the moment and preserve it!

Travel Photography with a Tripod

Travel and photography were meant for each other. On the road, scenery seems the most obvious subject, especially if you are blessed with one of those spectacular sunsets that simply take your breath away.

They say that carrying a tripod is for the hardcore photographer. How to stand out and capture a great moment is a very reachable goal which entails a bit added learning on how to use a tripod and your travel is rewarded. I carry a handy lightweight carbonized tripod always ready as the scene in front of me unfolds.

Using a tripod will allow you to take scenes that are most difficult to capture on a handheld shot. Capturing mystic waters, emotive sunsets, night sceneries in low light are tripod-demand shots. Removing glare and shooting high-contrast scenes common at mid daylight, which unfortunately our tourist guides lead us to, are best taken on a tripod. Imagine you are amidst the Egyptian Pyramids around 11 am to 2 pm where the sun is above your head, somebody takes your picture and voila…your face is covered in shadow and your pyramids are washed out due to the harsh light.

Be unique, travel with a tripod.

I have been doing photography as a hobby for five years already when I got interested in drones. I started with a cheap toy drone three years ago. After a year, I was able to purchase a real drone, and later upgraded to a new one. Flying a drone gives me a certain high, and it enhances my creativity as I capture photos and videos with it. My drones have been a constant companion in my travels, as I explore and capture interesting videos and images with a unique perspective.

Underwater Photography

Underwater photography can be a very technical hobby. Aside from trying to stay stable in the water column while SCUBA diving and thinking about your air consumption, buoyancy and depth, you still need to think about how to get the best picture.

Get proper equipment and invest on photography gear as basic as a Go Pro or an iPhone with an underwater housing, to more complex set ups for DSLR that include lighting. You must have an underwater flash or strobe. The water absorbs light. Without strobes, pictures come out in all blue tones. Sometimes a red filter can improve pictures when using a go pro camera.

Always shoot a subject with the field of view looking up. Shooting downwards will show the reef and the image will be flat and boring. Add more water to the picture!

Another tip would be—don’t harm the reef! Sometimes, in our quest to get the best shot, we forget about being mindful of the animals around us. Fins can damage corals. Improper SCUBA techniques can stir up sand!

You don’t have to get good pictures every time. Sometimes the sky is cloudy. Other times, there will be current. So it will be hard to take pictures. There will always be more opportunities next time! The important thing is to dive safely!

The adrenaline rush in the outdoors while savoring that relaxing, more intimate bond with nature and ending it with a dip in the seas of Quezon Province are the promises of riding through the famed Marilaque road.

Marilaque, a term coined from the first syllables of Marcos Highway, and provinces of Rizal, Laguna, and Quezon by frequent motorcycle and car enthusiasts and cyclists in the past years, is a 110-kilometer distance route along Marikina-Infanta Road. It is a famous option for a countryside ride, thanks to its breathtaking views, fresh air, and all that Sierra Madre has to offer.

Buenavista

An Island With A Good View

If there’s an island that I keep looking forward of going to, it’s none other than Buenavista (a combination of two Spanish words: “buena” for good and “vista” for view). Located at the Island Garden City of Samal, it used to be known as Little Ligid Island.

After all, Buenavista is Davao’s version of Palawan’s Amanpulo (which means “peaceful island”). The good thing about Buenavista is that you can have it all for a night for you and nine others.

“In this island, we give a new dimension to the words privacy and exclusivity,” explains Brenda Ocampo, the resort’s marketing manager. “When we say that the island is private and exclusive, we mean you own the island for the period that you have it booked. There’s nobody else in the island except you and your companions – and of course some of the staff who will do the nitty-gritty chores like cooking your meals and fixing your beds.”

The island is only 4 hectares at high tide but approximately 8 hectares during low tide. It may be small, but size is just a state of the mind. Everything else is big – in terms of fun and memories!
