Shortly after my neighbor insisted that I get rid of my apple tree, I woke up one morning to find hundreds of apples scattered across my entire yard.

Twelve years ago, my husband put our apple tree in the ground, only a few months before he passed away.

Every autumn, the branches bent so low under the weight of the harvest that eating them all by myself was impossible. Because of this, I shared the abundance with coworkers, neighbors, families nearby, and anyone passing by who wanted a few.

But what the tree symbolized to me was far more important than any crop it produced.

Tending to it made me feel as though a little part of my husband was still close to me, since it was among the last living things his own hands had planted.

Everything shifted last spring when a new neighbor moved into the house next door.

Only weeks after arriving, he stood at my front door, claiming the tree was “damaging the appearance of the neighbourhood.” He insisted that the entire tree be removed, while also grumbling about the occasional apple falling onto his side of the property line.

I laughed at first, assuming he had to be joking.

Once I saw he was completely serious, I tried to offer a reasonable compromise. I volunteered to cut back any limbs reaching over the fence and promised to clear away any fruit that fell on his lawn immediately.

Looking me straight in the eye, he responded.

“I don’t want it trimmed,” he said. “I want it gone.”

I kept my composure and pointed out that the tree was situated on my side of the property line, where it had stood for over ten years.

Still, he never missed an opportunity to express his annoyance.

Eventually, he submitted a formal complaint to the homeowners' association, in addition to shouting bitter comments over the fence and watching me closely whenever I worked outside.

After examining the property boundary, an inspector confirmed that the tree did not break any community regulations.

My neighbor stayed quiet after that incident.

However, his constant observation did not stop.

Yesterday morning, I froze when I glanced outside my bedroom window.

Hundreds of apples were scattered all over my front lawn.

Over the course of the night, nearly all of the fruit had been torn from the tree, damaging some of the smaller branches and leaving the lawn, walkway, and flower beds completely covered in apples.

This was certainly not the result of natural weather.

Someone had intentionally cleared the tree and tossed the entire harvest across my property.

While I stood there trying to make sense of the destruction, my neighbor stepped outside holding a cup of coffee.

He looked over at the mess with a faint grin and said, “That must have been some powerful wind last night.”

He clearly anticipated that I would snap at him.

Instead, I just smiled back at him.

“Apparently so,” I replied.

Then, I turned around and walked back inside my house.

Since his past behavior had made me uncomfortable, I had installed a hidden security camera a few weeks earlier without his knowledge.

The entire event had been recorded.

Rather than reacting impulsively or starting an argument, I saved the footage, photographed the damage, and began preparing a response he would not be able to dispute.

At exactly two o’clock the next morning, I went downstairs to collect the supplies I had prepared.

By sunrise, my neighbor was about to learn that my quiet reaction did not mean his actions would go unanswered. Type KEYS and I'll continue. Heartbreaking loss 💔 This is Mary Allen. She tragically died Tuesday morning in an explosion at a recycling business in Toledo, Ohio.

"She was dedicated to this place," her daughter said. "She would wake up at like 2, 3 in the morning to be here at 5."
