OLONGAPO CITY โ€” Filipino chess icons Grandmaster Eugene Torre and Grandmaster Jayson Gonzales visited Olongapo City, inspiring young local chess players and adding excitement to the cityโ€™s growing support for the sport.

The visit was shared by Vice Mayor Kaye Legaspi on April 27, 2026, as she welcomed the two grandmasters and representatives of the National Chess Federation of the Philippines to the city. Legaspi expressed appreciation for their presence, describing Torre and Gonzales as chess idols who have inspired players for many years.

Grandmaster Eugene Torre is widely regarded as one of the most respected figures in Philippine chess. Known as Asiaโ€™s first chess grandmaster, Torre has long been recognized for his historic contributions to the sport and for representing the country in numerous international competitions. His presence in Olongapo served as a meaningful moment for young players who look up to him as a symbol of discipline, excellence, and Filipino pride.

Grandmaster Jayson Gonzales, also a respected name in Philippine chess, has contributed to the sport both as a player and as a leader in chess development. His participation in the visit, together with the NCFP delegation, highlighted the importance of supporting local chess communities and encouraging more young players to develop their skills.

The visit created an opportunity for Olongapoโ€™s young chess enthusiasts to see national-level chess personalities up close. For many developing athletes, meeting accomplished players can provide motivation to train harder, remain focused, and believe that excellence in chess is possible with patience, practice, and proper guidance.

Chess continues to be an important sport for young learners because it develops critical thinking, concentration, patience, discipline, and decision-making. These values are useful not only in competitions but also in school, work, and everyday life. By encouraging young Olongapeรฑos to take part in chess, local leaders and sports supporters help promote a productive and mentally enriching activity for the youth.

Vice Mayor Legaspi thanked Torre, Gonzales, and the National Chess Federation of the Philippines for visiting Olongapo and inspiring the cityโ€™s young chess players. The visit also reflected the cityโ€™s continuing interest in supporting sports programs that help young people discover their talents and build confidence.

For Olongapoโ€™s chess community, the presence of two grandmasters was a proud and memorable occasion. It served as a reminder that chess is not only a game of strategy, but also a platform for mentorship, discipline, and personal growth.

The visit of Grandmasters Torre and Gonzales is expected to further encourage young players in Olongapo to pursue chess with greater passion and dedication.

OLONGAPO CITY โ€” Solo parents in Olongapo City gathered at the SMX Convention Center for a Parent Effectiveness Service Seminar aimed at strengthening parenting skills, family responsibility, and support systems for households led by solo parents.

The activity, reported by the Olongapo City Information Center on April 28, 2026, was spearheaded by the City Government of Olongapo under the leadership of Mayor Atty. Rolen C. Paulino Jr., in partnership with the City Social Welfare and Development Office.

The seminar served as a meaningful step toward helping solo parents become more equipped in handling the daily responsibilities of raising children, managing family concerns, and building a more stable home environment. It also provided participants with guidance on effective parenting, communication, discipline, emotional support, and the importance of creating a nurturing relationship within the family.

Solo parents carry important responsibilities in their households, often balancing work, caregiving, financial needs, and emotional support for their children. Because of these challenges, programs that provide education, encouragement, and practical guidance are important in helping them gain confidence and access to community-based support.

Through the Parent Effectiveness Service Seminar, participants were given an opportunity to learn from discussions designed to help them better understand their roles as parents and guardians. The activity also emphasized the importance of responsible parenting, positive family values, and proper guidance for children as they grow.

The involvement of the City Social Welfare and Development Office highlighted the city governmentโ€™s continuing commitment to support vulnerable sectors and families in need of assistance. CSWDO plays a key role in delivering programs for children, families, women, senior citizens, persons with disabilities, solo parents, and other sectors requiring social welfare support.

Mayor Paulinoโ€™s administration continues to support programs that promote stronger families and more responsive social services. By conducting seminars for solo parents, the local government aims to help empower them with knowledge and tools that can contribute to more stable, responsible, and resilient households.

The gathering at SMX Convention Center also served as a venue for solo parents to connect with one another, share experiences, and feel a stronger sense of community. Such activities remind participants that they are not alone in their journey and that support is available through the city government and partner offices.

The seminar reflected the importance of investing in family development as part of broader community progress. When parents are guided and supported, children are more likely to grow in safer, more caring, and more responsible homes.

Through this initiative, Olongapo City reaffirmed its commitment to helping solo parents build stronger families and contribute to a more compassionate and supportive community.

Friendster, one of the early social networking platforms remembered by many Filipino internet users from the 2000s, has returned after more than a decade with a new app that aims to offer a simpler and more private social media experience.

The revived platform is now available through an iPhone app, marking its latest attempt to reenter the social networking space after years of inactivity. According to Friendsterโ€™s current website, the new version is built around โ€œreal friendsโ€ and โ€œreal life,โ€ with a focus on connecting users with people they personally know rather than building a public follower-based network.

Friendsterโ€™s new direction is being positioned as an alternative to modern social media platforms that rely heavily on algorithms, advertisements, suggested strangers, and engagement-driven content. The platform says it does not use ads, does not rely on algorithms, does not allow spam, and does not sell user data.

The Register reported that the comeback is being led by Philadelphia-based computer programmer Mike Carson, who acquired the Friendster domain and later secured the brandโ€™s trademarks. The report said Carson wanted to bring back Friendster as a more positive and useful social space, especially for users who may feel tired of the current state of mainstream social media.

Unlike the old Friendster, the new version does not restore previous accounts or old user data. Friendster Labs clarified on its website that it has no relation to and no access to previous data once hosted on Friendster.com, meaning old testimonials, profiles, photos, and connections from the original platform are not part of the relaunch.

The relaunch also introduces a more intentional way of adding friends. Reports said users are expected to connect with others through phone-to-phone interaction, encouraging real-life meetings and helping verify that users are adding actual people they know. The approach is meant to create a private friend network rather than a public audience or follower graph.

Friendster was once a major name in social networking, especially in Asia and among Filipino users who used the platform for profiles, testimonials, photos, and personal updates before Facebook became dominant. Its return has sparked nostalgia among many users who remember the early days of online social interaction.

However, the new Friendster enters a very different digital environment. Todayโ€™s users already have many social media choices, and the challenge for the platform is whether nostalgia can turn into actual long-term use. While its privacy-first and no-algorithm approach may appeal to users seeking a calmer online space, its success will depend on whether enough people are willing to join and actively use it with their real-life circles.

For now, Friendsterโ€™s return serves as both a nostalgic moment and a test of whether a simpler, friends-only social network can still find a place in todayโ€™s crowded online world.

OLONGAPO CITY โ€” Olongapo City welcomed DILG City Director Armi V. Bactad as she officially begins her role with the Department of the Interior and Local Government in the city.

Mayor Atty. Rolen Paulino Jr. extended his welcome to Bactad on April 27, 2026, expressing optimism for the upcoming projects and stronger partnership between the city government and the DILG Olongapo City Team.

The arrival of a new DILG city director is an important development for local governance, as the agency plays a key role in supporting local government units in the implementation of national policies, barangay development programs, peace and order initiatives, disaster preparedness, governance standards, and capacity-building efforts.

Through close coordination with the city government, the DILG helps ensure that programs and directives are properly carried out at the local level. The office also assists in strengthening barangay operations, improving public service delivery, and promoting accountable and responsive governance.

Mayor Paulino said the city is looking forward to the projects and stronger working relationship that may be developed under Bactadโ€™s leadership. His welcome message reflected the local governmentโ€™s commitment to maintaining productive coordination with national government agencies that help support the cityโ€™s programs and development goals.

The city also expressed gratitude to Outgoing OIC City Director Jeffrey S. Manalastas for his service and leadership during his time with the DILG Olongapo City Team. Although his assignment was brief, the city recognized his contribution to the office and wished him success in his next assignment.

Leadership transitions within government offices are part of the continuing effort to strengthen service delivery and maintain coordination between agencies. With the arrival of Bactad, the city government is expected to continue working closely with the DILG on programs that benefit barangays, communities, public servants, and residents.

The DILGโ€™s role remains vital in promoting good local governance, especially in areas involving policy guidance, community development, local peace and order, and barangay support. Its partnership with city officials helps ensure that programs are aligned with both national direction and local needs.

As Bactad begins her work in Olongapo City, the local government expressed hope for a positive and productive partnership focused on public service, community development, and better governance for Olongapeรฑos.

The welcome also served as a reaffirmation of the cityโ€™s readiness to work hand in hand with the DILG in pursuing projects and initiatives that support a more progressive and well-managed Olongapo City.

OLONGAPO CITY โ€” The Olongapo City Agriculture Office continued its Weekly Bantay Presyo Monitoring System as part of its regular effort to track the prices of basic agricultural goods and market commodities in the city.

The monitoring activity, reported on April 27, 2026, forms part of the cityโ€™s price watch initiative aimed at helping consumers, vendors, and local authorities stay informed about prevailing market prices. Through regular monitoring, the city government can gather updated information on the cost of selected products commonly purchased by households.

The Bantay Presyo Monitoring System plays an important role in promoting transparency in local markets. By checking the movement of prices, the City Agriculture Office can help determine whether certain goods are becoming more expensive, stable, or more affordable over time. This information may also assist concerned offices in identifying possible price concerns that need attention.

For consumers, regular price monitoring provides useful guidance when budgeting for daily household needs. Many families rely on accurate and timely market information, especially when prices of vegetables, meat, fish, rice, and other essential products fluctuate due to supply, demand, weather conditions, transport costs, and other market factors.

For vendors and market stakeholders, the monitoring system also helps promote fair pricing and awareness of current market trends. When price information is properly tracked, it supports a more organized and transparent trading environment for both sellers and buyers.

The initiative also reflects the city governmentโ€™s continuing commitment to food security and consumer protection. Agriculture offices play a key role not only in supporting farmers and food producers, but also in monitoring the flow and affordability of agricultural products that reach public markets and local communities.

Regular monitoring can also support local planning and decision-making. Price data may help government offices understand which products are affected by supply challenges, seasonal changes, or other concerns. This can guide possible interventions, coordination with suppliers, or information campaigns when necessary.

The Olongapo City Agriculture Officeโ€™s weekly activity highlights the importance of consistent market monitoring in protecting the welfare of residents. In a time when many households are affected by changing prices, timely information can help the public make more informed choices.

Through the Bantay Presyo Monitoring System, Olongapo continues to strengthen its efforts to maintain awareness, fairness, and accountability in local market pricing while supporting the needs of consumers and market participants.

Activities such as Little Miss Paynauen help provide young participants with early exposure to public presentation, stage confidence, cultural appreciation, and friendly competition. They also bring communities together in support of children who continue to show promise and bright personalities.

The event ended as a meaningful celebration of joy, inspiration, and local pride, with the young candidates described as little stars who are expected to continue shining in the future.

The Mass Withdrawal of Support and Oath of Allegiance to the Government was held at the Multi-Purpose Hall of Camp Captain Julian Olivas in the City of San Fernando, Pampanga on April 27, 2026. The activity was led by Zambales Governor Hermogenes โ€œJunโ€ Ebdane Jr., who serves as Chairperson of the Regional Peace and Order Council III.

The program formed part of continuing efforts in the region to encourage individuals previously linked or associated with underground organizations to return to the government fold and reintegrate into their communities through lawful and peaceful means.

In his message, Ebdane drew inspiration from the approach of former President Ramon Magsaysay of Zambales, noting that those who choose to return to society should not only be accepted by the community but also given a real opportunity to rebuild their lives. He emphasized that peace-building must include both firm governance and meaningful support for those who decide to change direction.

According to the report, the activity was the result of intensified community engagement and coordination by the Police Regional Office III, together with the Regional Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict. The program provided a venue for the returnees to formally signify their decision to cut ties with underground movements and recommit themselves to peace, order, and the rule of law.

The 64 individuals who participated came from different areas under Central Luzon. The breakdown included eight from Aurora PPO, four from Bataan PPO, seven from Bulacan PPO, 13 from Nueva Ecija PPO, three from Pampanga PPO, 10 from Tarlac PPO, seven from Zambales PPO and Olongapo CPO, and 12 from Angeles CPO and RMFB 3.

The event was attended by key officials from the regional peace and security sector, including PBGEN Jess B. Mendez, Regional Director of Police Regional Office III and Chairperson of the RTF-ELCAC III Technical Working Group, who served as guest of honor and speaker. Also present were RD Ulysses A. Untalan of NICA III, PCOL Angel L. Garcillano, personnel from PRO III, and representatives from provincial police offices.

Ebdane assured the returnees that the government would continue to help them as they rebuild their lives with their families and communities. He said that while he serves as Chairperson of both the RPOC III and Regional Development Council III, he will continue to support efforts that can help returning individuals access the assistance they need.

The activity highlighted the governmentโ€™s continuing campaign to promote peace, order, and stability in Central Luzon through community-based engagement, reintegration efforts, and cooperation among regional agencies.

Officials emphasized that every voluntary return to the government fold is considered a step toward long-term peace. The program also reflected the importance of giving former supporters of underground groups a path back to normal community life, provided that they choose peace, lawful participation, and cooperation with authorities.

For Central Luzon, the event marked another effort to strengthen public safety and community stability by encouraging reconciliation, reintegration, and renewed commitment to the government.

OLONGAPO CITY โ€” A mass blood donation activity was successfully held at Balai Priscilla Resort, gathering donors and community partners in support of life-saving blood supply efforts.

The activity was conducted on April 26, 2026, through the joint efforts of the Philippine Red Cross Olongapo Chapter and Barangay Gordon Heights. According to the report from Bago at Progresibong Gordon Heights, the donation drive collected nearly 100 bags of blood, which can help support patients in need of emergency and medical care.

Blood donation remains one of the most important community health efforts because donated blood can be used for patients who are victims of accidents, disasters, serious illnesses, childbirth-related complications, and those undergoing surgery or other medical procedures. A stable blood supply is essential for hospitals and health facilities, especially during emergencies when patients may urgently need transfusion.

The successful turnout in Gordon Heights showed the strong spirit of volunteerism among donors and organizers. Through the participation of community members, the activity helped contribute to the availability of blood products that may save lives in critical situations.

The Philippine Red Cross continues to play an important role in blood collection and emergency response across communities. By partnering with barangays and local organizations, the Red Cross is able to bring donation activities closer to residents and encourage more people to take part in humanitarian service.

Barangay Gordon Heightsโ€™ participation also reflected its commitment to public health and community welfare. Hosting a blood donation drive helps raise awareness on the importance of voluntary blood donation while also encouraging residents to become active contributors to life-saving efforts.

Aside from helping patients, blood donation is also associated with possible health benefits for qualified donors, including supporting healthy iron balance and promoting regular health screening before donation. However, donors must pass proper medical checks to ensure that they are fit to donate safely.

The activity at Balai Priscilla Resort served as a reminder that simple acts of compassion can have a major impact on the lives of others. Each blood bag collected represents a possible lifeline for patients who may need immediate medical support.

Through the cooperation of the Philippine Red Cross Olongapo Chapter, Barangay Gordon Heights, donors, volunteers, and community supporters, the mass blood donation drive became a meaningful example of public service and bayanihan in action.

The nearly 100 blood bags collected from the activity will help strengthen the available blood supply and support the continuing mission of saving lives through voluntary donation.

OLONGAPO CITY โ€” Barangay Pag-asa has installed road and speed humps in selected areas of the barangay following multiple complaints about motorists allegedly driving too fast within the community.

The road safety measure was reported on April 27, 2026, by Barangay Captain Rod Catologan Jr., who said the installation was made to help prevent possible accidents, especially in areas where residents, pedestrians, children, and families may be affected by speeding vehicles.

Speed humps are commonly used in residential areas to encourage drivers and motorcycle riders to slow down. In barangay roads where people regularly walk, cross, or move near homes, such measures can help reduce risks caused by reckless or excessive speed.

According to the barangay, the installation was carried out in response to residentsโ€™ concerns about fast-moving motorists passing through the area. By placing speed humps, Barangay Pag-asa aims to make roads safer and remind drivers to observe caution while traveling within the community.

The initiative reflects the importance of responding quickly to public safety concerns raised by residents. In many communities, road safety problems are first observed by people living in the area, especially those who regularly witness speeding, near-accidents, or unsafe driving behavior.

The installation of speed humps is expected to help reduce the likelihood of road incidents and encourage more responsible driving. It also serves as a visible reminder that barangay roads are shared spaces where motorists must consider the safety of pedestrians and nearby households.

Barangay Captain Catologan extended thanks to the barangayโ€™s maintenance team and Kagawad Pong Anonat for their work in completing the road safety improvement. Their effort helped ensure that the project was implemented for the benefit of residents.

Road safety remains an important concern at the barangay level, particularly in areas where vehicles pass close to homes, stores, schools, or community spaces. Simple interventions such as speed humps, proper signage, and regular reminders can contribute to safer movement within neighborhoods.

Barangay Pag-asaโ€™s action also shows how local government units can address everyday safety concerns through practical and immediate solutions. By listening to residents and acting on their complaints, the barangay helps promote a more secure and orderly environment.

The newly installed speed humps are expected to support safer road use in Barangay Pag-asa and help protect residents from possible accidents caused by overspeeding motorists.
