E-commerce platform Shopee recently revealed Toni Gonzaga as its newest ambassador. The launch received both supportive and critical reactions from Filipino netizens. But whether it was a PR win or not, only an in-depth look at people’s sentiments can tell.

Clutch MediaTech’s proprietary sentiment scanning capability examined the online sentiments surrounding Toni Gonzaga’s debut as Shopee’s newest endorser. Clutch trod through 366,531 collective engagements from 22 mainstream news links, within 24 hours of the launch. Check out the breakdown of sentiments:

◼️ Sharp criticisms for both Toni Gonzaga and Shopee make up for 45%, the biggest wedge, of the overall sentiment share. Netizens openly rebuked Shopee’s endorser of choice, as well as the e-commerce platform’s decision to celebrate an endorser amidst the retrenchment of its workers and employees.

◼️ Shopee’s key competitor seems to have benefitted from the controversial endorsement launch. 32% of the overall sentiment share is echoed support for Lazada, speaking of the people’s newfound preference for the online shopping platform.

◼️ The corporate launch wasn’t spared from political narratives too. 12% of the sentiments were direct hits to “kakampinks” or Leni Robredo supporters. This follows the group’s reverberant call to boycott Shopee, denounce Toni, and uninstall the app.

◼️ The remaining trace amounts of sentiments are of support for the endorsement launch, and other immaterial comments. They comprise 9% and 2% of the sentiment shares respectively.

The biggest chunk of the sentiment share about the state visit are well-wishes from his loyal supporters, comprising 26%.

Interestingly, the second sentiment share talks negatively of the trip. 23% are critical of President Marcos for making a family trip to Indonesia amidst the country's economic struggles—many deemed the trip untimely and insensitive.

Despite this, 12% still asserted that the president's state visit is completely valid as it is his presidential duty. In line with this, 11% were proud of President Marcos for sealing in multi-billion dollar investment deals in Indonesia.

The remaining trace sentiments are once again, disapproving of the president.

Some netizens had scathing remarks about President Marcos' solutions, or lack thereof, for the country's economic crises—making up 9% of the sentiment share.

Sarcastic comments warning Indonesia of the Marcos family, rigid comparisons between the Duterte and Marcos administrations, and critical comments about the Filipino community in Indonesia hold 8%, 5%, and 3% of the sentiment shares respectively.

ANU-ANO ANG MAHAHALAGANG ISYU NA TINALAKAY NI PRESIDENT BONGBONG MARCOS SA KANYANG UNANG SONA?

The president’s first State of the Nation Address tackled numerous agendas that would vastly affect the lives of the Filipino people. The country’s economy, particularly matters on taxation, topped the list at 78,123 engagements. The topic of education, which zeroed in on controversial topics like the resumption of the mandatory ROTC, amassed 43,520 engagements.

Livelihood topics were also widely discussed. Agriculture and the 4Ps or the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program respectively garnered 43,677 and 14,971 engagements.

The rest of the topics on the list also accumulated significant counts of engagements respectively–reflecting their importance to nation-building, and the lives of the Filipino people.

“HISTORY IS LIKE CHISMIS”: ELLA CRUZ, INULAN NG MAKASAYSAYANG PAMBABATIKOS

Ella Cruz’s controversial take on history, likening it to gossip, amusingly became social media’s biggest ‘chismis' over the last few days.

Supposedly a provocative promotion for her upcoming film Maid in Malacanang, Cruz’s statement blew out of proportion–probably to her surprise too. History experts suddenly chimed in, a teacher’s partylist urgently filed a bill reforming the way history is taught in schools, and thousands of netizens both slammed and supported Cruz on her statement.

Clutch MediaTech’s proprietary sentiment scanning capability tore through the different heated viewpoints on the topic, from a total of 573,188 engagements, to get a good pulse of how this issue is going down in history.

***

The sentiment scan showed that 39% of the overall conversation reflected negative criticisms towards Ella Cruz herself. This includes personal flaks from netizens condescendingly questioning her educational attainment, her intelligence, even her qualification to talk about history given that she’s only a B-list celebrity.

On the flip side, 32% of the overall sentiment share are of support and defense for Cruz. Most likely from staunch supporters of the Marcos administration, and the film. This sentiment share consists of comments fiercely justifying Cruz’s assertion that history is biased and opinionated, as well as comments slamming the historians who spoke against Ella Cruz’s quip.

Interestingly, neither taking Ella Cruz’s side nor denouncing her statement, Filipino netizens also expressed their general skepticism towards how history is written. For instance, many of them repeatedly referred to Winston Churchill’s quote: “history is written by victors” which implies that history is not always grounded in facts. This sentiment share consumes 16% of the overall conversation.

Lastly, at 9% and 4% respectively, trace sentiments on the issue speak of ill interpretations of the Marcoses in history books, and comments defending the discipline of history.
***

If this is indeed a ‘promotion by provocation’ ploy for Darryl Yap’s film, then given the mad amount of engagements and sentiments it generated, it surely worked. Albeit, at the expense of Ella Cruz.

But looking at the overall shares of online sentiments around the topic, it looks like many are still siding with the thought that history is indeed biased, filtered, and opinionated–just like Ella Cruz asserts. Presenting a peril to the battles against revisionism and false information.

BAGONG PILIPINAS, BAGONG MUKHA: ANG PANG-17 PANGULO NG PILIPINAS

The Marcos family is back in power after more than 3 decades. Yesterday, July 1st 2022, Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos was finally sworn in as the country’s 17th president.

The inauguration, albeit its simplicity, set both traditional and social media abuzz. Towards the end of the day, the event has generated millions of engagements on social media.

Clutch MediaTech tore through these conversations, scanning over 1.1 Million social media engagements within hours to find out if the new president received a warm welcome, or a cold shoulder from the Filipino people.

***

Following his landslide victory from the May 2022 polls, it was already expected that President Marcos’ inauguration would be enveloped in positive reactions and sentiments. His supporters were looking forward to his inauguration, expressing their anticipation in social media days prior.

True enough, as Clutch MediaTech’s quick sentiment scanning capability revealed, President Marcos’ inauguration received an overwhelming percentage of positive engagements.

Roughly 98% of the online conversations about the ceremony expressed favorable sentiments such as high praises for the inauguration, excitement for Bongbong’s administration, and commendations for President Marcos’ speech.

On the other hand, 2% of the overall sentiments were prickly towards the new president.

Comments and sentiments from this side of the fence were mostly of unacceptance. It looks like many are still refusing to honor Marcos as the country’s new head of state–denouncing his victory by calling him a cheat, and forecasting that the next 6 years will be grim just like his father’s presidency.

***

Bongbong Marcos’ institution as the Philippines’ 17th president was indeed met with a warm welcome and enthusiasm online, as the 98% positive sentiment suggests. However, the new president should also look intently into the firm 2% who are openly resisting his presidency. Because they will certainly watch his reign like hawks.

PABABA NA SA PWESTO PERO PATAAS PA RIN ANG NAKUKUHANG SUPORTA

President Duterte’s high approval and satisfaction ratings never wavered in the face of the difficulties and critical points of his administration. Controversies like extrajudicial killings, South China Sea territorial disputes, and the mishandling of the pandemic didn’t hold candles to popular Duterte Legacies such as ‘Build, Build, Build’, the war on drugs, and free tertiary education.

Some say the last 6 years were tragic. But more people are still thankful.

This was evident in the massive crowd “Salamat, PRRD” amassed at the Quirino Grandstand last Sunday. The thanksgiving concert was attended by thousands of solid Duterte supporters, as well as Digong’s allies both from the outgoing and incoming government.

Clutch MediaTech’s quick sentiment scanning capability probed the online conversations surrounding the thanksgiving concert. Within 5 hours, Clutch MediaTech was able to scan 231,887 engagements from 11 top-performing news and blog links. 87% of the overall sentiments are positive towards President Duterte, while 13% are critical of him and his administration.

Conversations within the 87% positive sentiments include expressions of gratitude to President Duterte’s leadership, commendations for his legacies, and comments recognizing him as the best head of state the country has ever had.

Still soaring high even in stepping down, President Duterte can rest easy knowing that his legacies will not perish in the incoming administration. If anything, they will have bigger footprints, especially with the strong calls for their continuity.

The incoming administration will undoubtedly be riding off Digong’s coattail. But we have yet to see if they can also sow their own legacies—and come out of their terms just as loved and cherished.

Notwithstanding crises and criticisms.

NETIZENS, NAGKAKAASARAN NA DAHIL SA ‘MAID IN MALACAÑANG’?

Controversial filmmaker Darryl Yap’s ‘Maid in Malacañang’ finally unveiled its official poster. Back in May, Yap dubbed the film as a “pang-asar” to the bashers of his heated short films released during the elections. Most of them, passionate Leni Robredo supporters.

Clutch Mediatech, through its quick sentiment scanning capability, pried into the online sentiments about the official film poster to see if it will live up to Yap’s vision of being a “pang-asar” film. And sure enough, it has been met with vexed reactions from Marcos supporters and non-supporters alike.

Across over 192,000 engagements from major news outlets, the most resounding sentiment come from strong Marcos supporters poking fun at the Robredo supporters’ displeasure towards the film. Comprising 36% of the overall conversation.

While other contentious reactions include criticisms for the film, and ludicrous mocking of Senator Imee Marcos’ jaw structure–the sentiments at 17% and 11% respectively.

Kicking off squabbles among netizens, ‘Maid in Malacañang’ is clearly on its way to irk more people towards its release. Making it a 'pang-asar' film indeed.

But as Clutch Mediatech’s scan also shows, the indignations go both ways–with Marcos (and perhaps, Darryl Yap) critics, also having a handful of vehement things to say. Looks like we have yet to find out who will be the 'asar-talo'.

Maid in Malacañang’s trailer will be released on July 7, 2022.
