YOUR SHOPIFY METRICS MAY HAVE MOVED.
Between September 21–23, Shopify updated how it measures sessions.
What changed:
→ Continuous activity now stays within one session instead of being split at midnight UTC
→ Some activity without a pageview can now count as a session — including shoppers going directly to checkout from a cart link
→ Identified bot sessions are filtered out by default
Why does this matter?
Because sessions sit underneath many of the metrics ecommerce teams use to judge performance:
Conversion rate • Add-to-cart rate • Reached-checkout rate • Checkout conversion • Bounce rate • Pages per session • Average session duration
Here’s the impact.
100 orders ÷ 10,000 sessions = 1.0% CVR
If Shopify filters out 2,000 bot sessions:
100 orders ÷ 8,000 sessions = 1.25% CVR
Same orders.
Same sales.
Higher reported conversion rate.
It can also move the other way.
If another 1,000 sessions are now counted:
100 orders ÷ 11,000 sessions = 0.91% CVR
Nothing necessarily got worse.
The way sessions are being counted changed.
What hasn’t changed:
Orders. Sales. Customers.
For your September reporting:
→ Treat September 21 as a measurement break
→ Check revenue, orders and customers before calling something a win or a problem
→ Use post-update data as your new baseline for session-based metrics
So if your conversion rate suddenly jumped or dropped this month, don’t react to the percentage alone.
Check whether the business changed — or just the measurement.
