Coalition 169 expresses its deepest gratitude to the Office of the Ombudsman, under the leadership of Jesus Crispin C. Remulla, for its decisive action in directing the cessation of the use of the Stradcom LTO-IT System and prioritizing the government-owned LTMS.

This directive is a strong affirmation that transparency, accountability, and the rule of law must prevail in government transactions. It recognizes the serious concerns raised regarding procurement compliance, public accountability, government data security, and the financial burden imposed on Filipino motorists.

We thank the Office of the Ombudsman for acting swiftly in the interest of the Filipino people. This development is a significant step toward protecting public funds, strengthening government digital systems, and ensuring that public service remains free from irregularities.

However, this is only the first step. Coalition 169 believes that the Ombudsmanโ€™s investigation must continue to its logical conclusion and identify all officials and individuals who may be responsible for any violations of law, abuse of authority, or irregularities related to the implementation and use of the Stradcom LTO-IT System. Accountability must not stop at corrective action; it must extend to those who enabled, authorized, or benefited from any unlawful acts.

Coalition 169 likewise urges the government to examine the possibility of providing refunds or other appropriate remedies to motorists who may have been charged fees or incurred costs arising from transactions associated with the questioned system. The Filipino people deserve assurance that any improperly collected charges will be fully reviewed and, where warranted by law, returned.

Today, accountability has taken a meaningful step forward, but the pursuit of truth, justice, and restitution for affected motorists must continue.

Legendary drummer, Cesar โ€œBachuโ€ Yumping, has just released his solo album, Matibay.

The album features a collection of rare recordings he made with Filipino-American musicians in Anaheim, California during the 1980sโ€”the same decade he was laying down grooves alongside Philippine jazz icons B**g Peรฑera and Boy Katindig.

As he celebrates his 78th birthday this month, Bachu remains as passionate and relentless as ever. A prolific session drummer and one of the pioneers of modern Philippine jazz, he continues to grace jam sessions, inspiring and astonishing musicians across generations with his energy, artistry, and unmistakable groove.

If youโ€™d like to support Bachu, copies of his self-produced Matibay album and exclusive t-shirts are available directly through himโ€”simply send him a message on Facebook. His music is also available on major streaming platforms, so be sure to give it a listen and experience the work of a true jazz legend.

Congratulations, Bachu, and thank you for continuing to keep the music alive.

Chaos erupted outside the Sandiganbayan as Jinggoy Estrada arrived to post bail, triggering the usual frenzy of cameras, bodyguards, supporters, and media shoving for position. But what caught even more attention was this: his youngest child reportedly got caught in the middle of the commotion.

Which raises the obvious question โ€” why bring your child into that kind of spectacle in the first place?

This was never going to be a quiet church visit or a Sunday family stroll. This was a high-profile legal appearance involving a senator long associated with controversy, media drama, and political theater. Everyone knew the scene would be chaotic. Everyone knew cameras would swarm. Everyone knew tempers and elbows would fly.

Yet somehow, a child ended up in the middle of it.

And now the public is expected to react with sympathy over the very chaos that was entirely predictable? Politics in this country has become so performative that even court appearances start looking like red carpet arrivals โ€” complete with entourage, dramatic visuals, and family framing for emotional effect.

The real tragedy is how normalized this has become. Public officials facing serious legal issues arrive like celebrities entering a premiere night, while supporters and handlers create a human traffic jam worthy of a mall opening sale. Then when disorder breaks out, everyone suddenly acts shocked.

Children should never be used โ€” intentionally or otherwise โ€” as emotional shields in political drama. Especially not in situations already guaranteed to descend into pushing, shouting, and media frenzy.

Because if you truly wanted to protect your child from chaos, you would not bring them directly into it.

โ€œWala man lang nangamusta sa amin,โ€ lamented Pia Cayetano โ€” as if the real tragedy in the middle of a national political circus was the lack of a wellness check on senators wrapped in privilege, security, and television cameras.

Remarkable.

At a time when ordinary Filipinos are worrying about inflation, unemployment, transport fares, and whether their salaries can survive another week, the Senate suddenly wants sympathy because no one asked if they were okay after the chaos they themselves helped amplify.

The irony writes itself.

For years, politicians mastered the art of selective empathy: deaf to public outrage, invisible during crises, but suddenly emotional when discomfort reaches their own doorstep. Now we are expected to shed tears because the powerful felt stressed for a few hours inside one of the most secured institutions in the country?

Filipinos did โ€œkamustaโ€ them โ€” through criticism, frustration, and disbelief.
They just did not like the answer.

And perhaps that is what truly hurts.

Senator Alan Peter Cayetano claimed the NBI fired first.

Then the footage came out.

Senate Sergeant-at-Arms Mao Aplasca was seen preparing before the shooting โ€” giving instructions and loading his weapon ahead of the incident. Meanwhile, Melvin Matibag denied that the NBI even deployed agents to the Senate.

So who exactly was Cayetano blaming?
What was sold to the public as a sudden attack now looks more like political theater caught too early on camera.

The problem with staged drama is simple: livestreams donโ€™t follow scripts.

14/05/2026

The scene was heavy with symbolism. Flags waved, chants echoed, and emotions ran high.
To supporters, it was an act of loyalty โ€” a public stand for a man they believe is being politically persecuted. To critics, however, it was another troubling example of how personality-driven politics in the Philippines continues to blur the line between democratic expression and dangerous political theater.

What unfolded was more than just a show of support for one senator. It revealed how deeply polarized the country has become. In todayโ€™s political climate, accountability is too often framed as oppression, while legal scrutiny is dismissed as political vendetta. The louder the crowd becomes, the easier it is for facts, institutions, and due process to be drowned out.

Senator Dela Rosa built his political identity on toughness, discipline, and unwavering loyalty during the Duterte administrationโ€™s brutal war on drugs. But public office was never meant to provide immunity from public scrutiny. In a functioning democracy, leaders are expected not only to wield power, but also to answer for the consequences of that power.

The gathering outside the Senate was emotional, but emotion alone cannot substitute for institutions. Democracy cannot survive on blind loyalty alone. It survives when supporters and critics alike recognize that no public official โ€” regardless of popularity, rank, or political influence โ€” stands above accountability.

What the nation witnessed was not merely a crowd defending a senator. It was a reflection of a country still wrestling with a difficult question: are Filipinos prepared to defend institutions with the same passion they defend personalities?

Before the tension escalated into what many now describe as a political siege inside the Senate, Senator Rodante Marcoleta delivered a speech defending Senator Ronald dela Rosa against the looming threat of arrest tied to the International Criminal Court proceedings.

It was not merely a speech of loyalty. It was a performance of resistance.

Marcoleta framed the possible arrest as an assault on Philippine sovereignty, portraying Dela Rosa not as a former police chief facing legal scrutiny, but as a soldier being hunted for carrying out the stateโ€™s war on drugs. The message was unmistakable: those once celebrated as enforcers of โ€œpeace and orderโ€ are now being recast as political martyrs.
Yet beneath the dramatic rhetoric lies an uncomfortable irony.

For years, critics of the drug war were dismissed, intimidated, or branded as enemies of the state whenever they raised questions about due process and accountability. Human rights concerns were mocked as weakness. Legal safeguards were treated as obstacles. Now, the very people who once championed uncompromising state power suddenly invoke fairness, sovereignty, and institutional protection when the possibility of accountability reaches their doorstep.

The Senate chamber became more than a venue for privilege speeches. It became a fortress of political solidarity โ€” where allies spoke less about justice and more about shielding one of their own.

Marcoletaโ€™s speech was polished, emotional, and calculated to energize supporters. But it also exposed a deeper truth about Philippine politics: principles often become loudest only when power feels threatened.

The issue is no longer whether one supports or opposes the ICC. The issue is whether accountability applies equally to everyone โ€” especially to those who once wielded immense authority over life and death.

A Senate that turns itself into a sanctuary from accountability risks weakening the very institutions it claims to defend. And when speeches become shields against legal scrutiny, democracy begins to sound less like governance and more like self-preservation.
