When Johannes Gutenberg invented the movable-type printing press around 1450, he modeled his metal typefaces on the handwritten script commonly used by scribes in Europe at the time.

That script was Textura Quadrata, a dense, angular, and ornate style of writing. 📖 Gutenberg’s most famous work, the 42-line Gutenberg Bible (1455), was printed entirely in this Textura font.
