Day 3 of 100 – Skills vs Tools (The Mistake Most Beginners Make)
When I was starting out in the VA industry, I remember seeing a lot of people list things like this:
“I know Canva.”
“I know ChatGPT.”
“I know Google Sheets.”
“I know Notion.”
And to be honest, I thought that was enough.
I believed that if I just learned more tools, it would automatically make me more hireable.
But over time, I realized something that many beginners misunderstand.
Tools are not the same as skills.
A tool is just a platform or software.
The skill is what you are able to do using that tool.
For example:
Knowing Canva is a tool.
But creating engaging social media content for a brand is the skill.
Knowing Google Sheets is a tool.
But organizing and managing data for a business is the skill.
Knowing ChatGPT is a tool.
But writing captions, doing research, or helping create marketing content is the skill.
And when clients are looking for a VA, they’re not really asking:
“Do you know Canva?”
What they’re really asking is:
“Can you help my business create better content?”
“Can you help me stay organized?”
“Can you help me find leads?”
“Can you help me save time?”
That’s why it’s important to focus on developing a skill first, then learning the tools that support that skill.
Because tools will always change.
But skills stay valuable.
This is Day 3 of 100 where I’m sharing lessons from my journey in the VA industry.
