OpenAI's Strategy for a Traditional For-Profit Enterprise
Established as a research group ten years ago, OpenAI is thinking about restructuring the AI business to include a charity division in addition to a more traditional profit-making corporation.
According to a blog post on Friday, the board is considering a strategy that would keep OpenAI's nonprofit operations while transforming the company into a public benefit corporation, which is an organization free to earn revenue but with the aim of improving society. The nonprofit arm would own stock in the moneymaking organization under the new arrangement.
