📜 Throwback to One of the Darkest Nights in Philippine History
🕯️ August 17, 1976 — The Moro Gulf Earthquake
At exactly 12:11 a.m., while most people in Mindanao were asleep, a powerful magnitude 7.9 earthquake struck beneath the Moro Gulf. Within minutes, a massive tsunami up to 9 meters high crashed into coastal towns — washing away entire communities in Cotabato, Lanao, Maguindanao, Sultan Kudarat, and Zamboanga.
💔 More than 8,000 lives were lost that night. Thousands more were injured or went missing. It remains the deadliest earthquake and tsunami in Philippine history.
Today, we remember not just the tragedy — but the lessons it left behind:
⚠️ Always stay alert.
🌊 Know your evacuation routes.
🏫 Take earthquake and tsunami drills seriously.
🏠 Build safe and resilient homes.
Let’s honor the memory of those we lost by being prepared and informed.
