📊 Research Methods Explained:
Qualitative vs. Quantitative Research
Research Methods: Quantitative and Qualitative
Research methods are systematic approaches used to collect, analyze, and interpret data. The two main types are quantitative research and qualitative research.
Advantages
Quantitative Research
* Produces reliable and objective results.
* Allows statistical analysis.
* Findings can often be generalized to a larger
population.
* Easy to compare results.
Qualitative Research
* Provides rich, detailed information.
* Explores participants’ feelings, beliefs, and
experiences.
* Flexible and adaptable during data collection.
* Helps explain why people behave in certain ways.
Disadvantages
Quantitative Research
* May not capture participants’ emotions or opinions
in depth.
* Requires large samples.
* Can be expensive and time-consuming.
Qualitative Research
* Findings are difficult to generalize.
* Data analysis can be subjective.
* Small sample sizes may not represent the entire
population.
* Time-consuming to collect and analyze data.
Key Differences
* Quantitative research answers questions such as “How many?”, “How much?”, or “What is the
relationship?”
* Qualitative research answers questions such as
“Why?”, “How?”, or “What does it mean?”
Mixed Methods Research
Some studies combine both approaches. This is called mixed methods research, where numerical data is supported by detailed qualitative insights to provide a more comprehensive understanding of the research problem.
Summary:
* Quantitative = Numerical data + Statistical analysis
+ Large samples + Objective findings.
* Qualitative = Non-numerical data + Thematic
analysis + Small samples + In-depth understanding.
* Mixed methods = Combination of both approaches
for a fuller picture.
