The Brigada Eskwela 2022 has kicked off yesterday, August 15, 2022; with the theme, “Tugon sa Hamon ng Ligtas na Balik-Aral”. It highlights the country’s collective efforts from various partnership engagements, creating a safe learning environment for the learners, teaching and non-teaching personnel, and community to achieve safety while ensuring the delivery of quality education. According to Vice President and Education Secretary Sara Z. Duterte, “The collaboration between the parents, the teachers, local governments, and the entire community on Brigada Eskwela opens a deeper and meaningful collaboration even after the school year closes. With the national government supporting DepEd with the Basic Education Development Plan 2030 serving as our guide, the success of the Department’s plans and programs shall now be completed by undying love for the profession of teaching Filipino children, our children, the future of our nation.”

Indeed, Brigada Eskwela opens a wider understanding of collaboration and cooperation between the Filipino people with one goal which is to promote a better and suitable learning environment for children who are the future bearers of light in our nation. The spirit of “Bayanihan” is the true essence of a seemingly endless support and love towards our nation. It gives us the opportunity to work together as one, even with our different cultural background and status in society. Furthermore, we don’t only acknowledge our true identity as Filipino, but we also promote camaraderie towards a better future for our children.

Kalinga National High School, on the other hand, has successfully conducted the Brigada Eskwela 2022 kick-off program and formally opened the school for another year of unconditional support towards its learners. The school conducted a short program to honor its partners. Many stakeholders and different government agencies have made their pledges as a support in the School. The Office of the Congressman in person of Hon. Sonny C. Mangaoang, the Philippine National Police Tabuk Station, Bureau of Fire Protection Tabuk Station, Philippine Army, Army Reservist, ROTC Officers and members, the Eagles Club, Barangay Bulanao Centro and Norte, Parents Teacher’s Association, Alumni and many others. With the collaboration of the school and different partners, it doesn’t only deepen our ties, but it also generates new ideas, programs, projects, activities, and avenues.

The highlight of the program was the giving of the Office of the Congressman’s full support in every school’s plans, projects, and programs, which was emphasized with the speech delivered by Sir Placido Alsiyang, representative to the Office of the Congressman. Also, the activity is not profound without the giving of Certificates to the different existing partners who gave the last Brigada Eskwela a deep meaning. After the program, all partners including the employees, worked together to improve the school’s surroundings through cleaning, repairing, and renovating. The Brigada Eskwela 2022 will continue until the 26th of August but this doesn’t mean that it ends here, it is only the beginning of the continuous support in promoting a safe and conducive learning environment to learners throughout the year.

KNHS holds in-person moving up, graduation ceremony

After two years experiencing the coronavirus pandemic, Kalinga National High School (KNHS) has finally conducted its face-to-face moving up and graduation rites at the Kalinga State University (KSU) gym on June 28, 2022 while observing health protocols and for everyone in attendance to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

As Kalinga province remains under health alert level 1 where social gatherings like graduation ceremonies, happiness is painted from the eager faces of the 349 completers and 350 graduates of KNHS as well as their parents and the teachers.

KNHS principal, Mildred S. Cabay said, “It is high time for the parents to accompany their children on stage after having longed for the personal experience since quarantines and lockdowns made previous graduation purely virtual. However, only one member of the family is allowed to attend."

The commencement exercises was divide into two sessions: moving up in the morning and graduation in the afternoon. These two events were graced by two guest speakers, Mr. Rogelio S. Cosidon, the PTA Vice President and Hon. Glenn Julius B. Amla, an alumnus of KNHS respectively. They both shared their experiences, struggles and successes which moved and inspired the completers and the graduates.

Moreover, the Schools Division Superintendent of Tabuk City Division, Irene S. Angway also commended this year-end exercises for being solemn and systematic.

“You may not find a path, but you will find a way.” - Tom Wolfe

Accessibility is one of the most important things to consider especially in reaching places that seem to be unreachable. One cannot reach their destination without pathways, roads and bridges that connect people or places. The same is true with schools; problems regarding access roads can be a very big problem for students who want to be educated. Accessible schools are likely to be students choice because they can easily go to school without compromising their education because of poor access roads.

Kalinga National High School had bloomed since the first time it was established. As Rev. Fr. Edilberto Pangibitan said when he celebrated mass for the foundation day last November 2021, “The Complete Metamorphosis of Kalinga National High School”. The school has undergone a series of development over the past few years. Many School Heads have done their part to make the school a worthy and suitable place for learners. Now, it is indeed a complete metamorphosis, from a simple cocoon to a beautiful butterfly soaring high and making a name.

It was a remarkable day for the school and its employees because the School Access Road was finally blessed and inaugurated and soon to be opened for public use. The fund that was allotted for the said project was through the initiative of the Honorable Congressman Allen Jesse C. Mangaoang, who gives his full support, especially to school projects. A mass was offered by Rev. Fr. Jeorge Manisem for the blessing of the access road. And for the first time, it was visited by the Congressman himself to do the honors of cutting the ribbon, together with Ma’am Mildred S. Cabay, the School Head. The PTA President, Mrs. Eileen Tubban; the Barangay Captain of Bulanao, Hon. Cosme B. Gunnawa; and a Council of Elders representative, Sir Emmanuel Bacacao; were also present during the inauguration.

During the program, Ma’am Cabay expressed her sincerest gratitude to the Honorable Congressman for making the project possible. She was so grateful that the road can no longer be a problem for the students, visitors and also the employees of Kalinga National High School. In his speech, Congressman Mangaoang said that, “it is very important to be part of a student’s success or achievements. Creating a convenient, safe and child-friendly school is the most important part to take part in, especially in promoting quality education to learners. It is the role of a public servant to render his services to the people. Being part of the community makes public service more meaningful.” Undoubtfully, the Honorable Congressman is a man of action. His passion for public service is a good example of camaraderie.

Access roads are also the doorway to success. Kalinga National High School is now a haven for learners. The quality of education reflects the bountiful blessing that the school is receiving. With its excellent facilities and accessibility, the school can eventually withstand any and all challenges that may come. Success will always be experienced, even with the first step made upon entering the school.

“Hope is being able to see that there is light despite all of the darkness” – Desmond Tutu. For almost three years, quality education was over-shadowed by the insurgency of the pandemic. Schools were closed, classes were suspended, and many children were left at home trying to understand lessons on their own. Figuring out what could be their future without formal education is the only thing a child can think of, and reminiscing about the past makes their worries even harder to bear. As days, months and years pass by; there is still no assurance of when this pandemic will end. A child’s dream of the future is slowly fading and the shore is already far in sight.

Distance Learning Modality is the form of education that the Department of Education mandates to ensure the continuity of learning. Kalinga National High School along with its dedicated teachers, personnel and stakeholders willingly extended their continued service and support to make learning possible to students despite the snares of the pandemic. It was indeed a challenge for both teachers and students to undergo such a form of education. There are issues, concerns, and problems that have been aroused along the way. Some students say that distance learning is hard because of high chances of distractions, weak or poor signals, and complicated technology. And some say that it’s fine because they can spend more time with their family; they can save money; they can learn at their own pace, and they can study whenever and wherever. We all have our own perspective about distance learning modality; it has indeed its own advantages and disadvantages. But, all of us experienced the same hardships and challenges brought on by the pandemic. For teachers and students, nothing can compare to the quality of learning in a classroom setting.

The light that was over-shadowed by darkness is now becoming brighter as the pandemic continues to decline. The Province of Kalinga is now under Alert Level 1 based on periodic risk assessment by the Department of Health. The Department of Education issued an order (DO no. 17, s. 2022) dated February 2, 2022, allowing all schools for a progressive expansion of limited face-to-face classes. In this case, Kalinga National High School can finally open its doors to learners. The school is located in an Alert level 1 area, which is basically one of the parameters of the order, so it can formally start its limited face-to-face classes. But before formally starting, Kalinga National High School should see to it that all requirements under the order are met. After orienting the Students, Parents, Teachers, and Personnel, the Limited Face-to-Face classes were finally opened on March 21, 2022.

One requirement also is the Grant of a Safety Seal issued by the Department of Interior and Local Government. In preparation for the on-site inspection, Kalinga National High School had been working hard to improve and add facilities as prescribed by Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) Health Protocols and Safety Seal Requirements. Additional hand washing area, classroom ventilations, barriers, additional triage area, isolation area, signage and emergency hotlines are only some of the requirements that the school had prepared for the Safety Seal Certificate. The School Disaster Risk Reduction Management (DRRM) Office compiled and submitted supporting documents in compliance with the requirements of the DILG-CLGOO Office and was approved for an on-site inspection. On April 7, 2022; the DILG Inspection Team composed by the City Local Government Operations Office (CLGOO) headed by Mrs. Gemma Bawanta along with the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) and Philippine National Police (PNP) came to the school for the assessment. The team roamed around the school premises and was impressed with the preparations with just minor suggestions. Mrs. Gemma Bawanta, congratulated the School Head Mrs. Mildred S. Cabay for the job well done and formally handed the Safety Seal Certificate. The Seal is a trophy to all teachers and personnel who extended their help to make the School a safe place for the learners. And most especially to the School Head, Mrs. Cabay, who made all things possible with her exemplary conviction of true leadership and service. Kalinga National High School is now a safe haven and can continue its smooth operation and inculcate quality education to the learners.

The Safety Seal is not only a piece of paper that certifies the school for its safeness, cleanliness, and preparedness. It symbolizes hope, new beginnings, new life, and new chapter; leaving behind the nightmares of the pandemic. It is also a reminder that despite the challenges we encounter, there is always unity and camaraderie in dealing and solving societal problems. It is a mark of quality; quality of work, quality of working together, and quality of education.
