Facebook Comment Tagging Malware
WHAT?
A recent scam is now seen lurking in Facebook, and is known as “comment tagging malware”. In this attack, victims gets social media notification that he/ she has been tagged in a comment by someone they know. As soon as they click on it, they find out that a bunch more people has also been tagged in the comment section.
HOW IT HAPPENS?
Once the victim clicks the link, the malware then automatically begins to download on their device. Then, when the user clicks on certain files and images, the malware becomes executed; infecting the device of the victim.
This similar kind of malware, known as “malicious tagging” was also detected in 2018, 2016, 2015 and so on.
HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF?
Here are few things you can do in order to protect yourself and your circle from being a victim to such attacks:
• Do not attempt to click on the video or link in the tagged post.
• As soon you see such notification of you and bunch of people being tagged in a post, report the page and simply remove yourself from the tag.
• Report the post as Scam.
• Don’t assume that everything your friend’s posts on social medias are true and safe. You can’t be sure that your friend has fallen as a victim to such scam or his/ her system hasn’t been hacked.
• Make people around you aware about the malware and the “tagging virus” and make sure they don’t click on such links.
