is the opportunity. Will Pakistan build it or just use it?

As AI becomes economic infrastructure, Pakistan’s opportunity may not be to build billion-dollar frontier models from scratch, but to adapt, localise and build solutions for our own needs and global markets.

Think Urdu and regional-language AI, smarter agriculture, AI tutors, healthcare tools, public services and higher-value digital exports.

But technology alone won’t get us there. We need computing infrastructure, stronger universities–industry links, and young people equipped with future-ready AI and digital skills.

Yesterday, we asked whether Pakistan can create better opportunities at home. This is part of the answer. The goal should be simple: move from being AI users to AI builders, adapters and exporters.

The 64% decline in irregular migration from Pakistan to Europe is significant, but it also raises a bigger question: what happens next?

If young people are to choose safer, legal and sustainable pathways, they need real opportunities at home: skills that match emerging jobs, quality technical and digital training, access to employers, entrepreneurship opportunities and credible pathways into decent work.

This matters even more as AI, digitalisation and the green economy reshape the labour market. The ILO’s latest global youth employment findings underline the growing gap between young people and changing labour-market demands, while its work on Pakistan has repeatedly highlighted the need to make skills development more relevant to actual market needs.

So the conversation cannot stop at preventing irregular migration.

The real question is: Are we building an economy where young people can see a future worth staying for?

That means asking:

Are our classrooms keeping pace?

Are practical skills accessible beyond major cities?

Are young women getting equal access to opportunity?

Are employers part of the skills-development process?

And are we preparing young people for the jobs that will exist tomorrow, not just the jobs that existed yesterday?

Reducing unsafe migration is one part of the solution. Creating better choices at home is another.

The 64% decline in irregular migration from Pakistan to Europe is encouraging, but enforcement is only one part of the solution.

The next step is to address the pressures that drive people towards dangerous routes, through skills development, decent opportunities at home, credible legal migration pathways and stronger awareness against trafficking networks.

The goal should not simply be fewer irregular journeys, but more safe, legal and dignified opportunities for young Pakistanis.

What changes when persons with disabilities are seen not as beneficiaries, but as participants, leaders and decision-makers?

A recent workshop in Islamabad offers an encouraging example.

The Inclusive Educators’ Learning & Exchange at the National Institute of Special Education brought together 65 participants from mainstream and special education institutions, including educators, professionals and students with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

What stood out was the student-led approach. Students took active roles in group activities, while accessibility was built into the event through live Pakistan Sign Language interpretation. The programme also explored the Social Model of Disability and Universal Design for Learning.

This is an important shift in thinking.

For too long, disability has often been approached through a charity or welfare lens, focusing on what people with disabilities need. A rights-based approach asks a different question:

What barriers are preventing people from participating equally, and what needs to change?

That shift requires more than accessible buildings or assistive devices. It requires changes in attitudes, communication, education, employment, policies and institutions and, importantly, meaningful participation of persons with disabilities themselves.

This is also an area in which Digital Time Communications (DTC) has been closely engaged through its and work.

DTC has supported initiatives and institutions working towards disability inclusion, including Sightsavers, Special Talent Exchange Program (STEP) and the Community Based Inclusive Development Network (CBIDN). These partnerships have provided opportunities to communicate issues of inclusion, accessibility, rights, education, employment and participation, while helping bring disability-related conversations into wider public and media spaces.

What if the real measure of reducing irregular migration is not how many young people leave, but how many can build a future without having to?

Pakistan’s reported 64% decline in irregular migration to Europe is encouraging. But the bigger challenge is creating meaningful opportunities at home: marketable skills, decent jobs, entrepreneurship, access to finance, career guidance and safer pathways for those who do seek opportunities abroad.

Young people do not only need to be told where not to go. They need viable reasons to stay, grow and succeed.

The long-term answer lies in turning Pakistan’s youth potential into opportunity, through skills, employment and an economy that can absorb ambition.

The question is not only how to reduce irregular migration. It is: how can Pakistan create enough opportunity that young people can choose their future?

How safe is the world we are giving our ?

The is now considering tighter rules on children’s access to , including restrictions for under-13s.

For Pakistan, this should also raise a question. Our children are spending more time online, but how much are we talking about their online safety, screen time, harmful content, privacy and mental well-being?

This is not just a technology issue. It is a conversation for parents, schools, policymakers and technology platforms.

Are we doing enough to protect children online?

What does it take to keep a child in school, not just get them through the door?

is about more than enrollment. Safe spaces, facilities, , support and the resources to learn all play a role in whether vulnerable children can enter, stay and thrive in school.

Addressing these barriers, NEF and MEHD have joined hands to strengthen learning environments and support educational access for children from underserved communities.

The initiative has been covered by Associated Press of Pakistan (APP) and other media platforms, another step in bringing these important education issues into the public conversation.
