Bilal Gilani, Executive Director, Gallup Pakistan, participated in the panel discussion “What Gets Counted, What Gets Lost: Gender and Data” at LUMS, as part of the Gender and the Economy conference.

The session was skilfully moderated by Sher Afghan Asad, Assistant Professor of Economics at LUMS, and brought together an exceptional panel of national and international experts including representatives from Ohio State University, Erasmus University Rotterdam, the National Commission on the Status of Women, and Kashf Foundation.

The discussion explored a critical question: How does the way we collect, define, and interpret data shape what we understand about gender realities—and what remains invisible?

Bilal Gilani shared perspectives from Gallup Pakistan’s experience in public opinion research and large-scale data collection, reflecting on the challenges of measuring women’s voices, economic participation, household decision-making, and social realities in contexts where conventional datasets often miss important dimensions.

A rich exchange followed on the promise—and limitations—of data in informing policy, advancing gender equity, and ensuring that what matters is not simply measured, but meaningfully understood.

Important conversations begin with better questions—and better data.

FAST National University Hosts Lecture by Bilal Ijaz Gilani on Pakistan’s “Uneven Growth”

Gallup Pakistan Executive Director Bilal Ijaz Gilani visited the Islamabad campus of FAST National University and delivered a lecture titled “Glass Half Full or Half Empty: Uneven Growth in Pakistan.”

The session was attended by hundreds of students and faculty members, and focused on Pakistan’s changing socioeconomic landscape, including trends in education, poverty reduction, digital access, demographic change, inequality, and regional disparities. The lecture encouraged students to critically examine whether Pakistan’s development story should be viewed through a lens of optimism, concern, or both simultaneously.

The discussion also highlighted the importance of data-driven policymaking and evidence-based public discourse, with examples drawn from national surveys, census findings, labor force data, and household-level indicators.

During the visit, discussions were also held regarding potential collaboration between FAST National University and Gallup Pakistan, including the possibility of an MoU focused on academic engagement, research collaboration, and student development initiatives.

As part of these discussions, opportunities for students of FAST to participate in the Gallup Pakistan Summer Internship Program were also explored, with both sides expressing interest in strengthening industry-academia linkages and providing students with practical exposure to survey research, analytics, and public policy work.

Gallup Pakistan latest survey findings suggest that only 15% Pakistani adults have used AI in recent past. The figure hides significant disparity between young and old , educated and less educated , male and female .

As the AI revolution reshapes the world , we risk not just being left behind in the world but also creating haves and have nots within Pakistan.

The existing inequalities within Pakistan would be multiplied and accelerated with AI unless we have a complete rethink at both government as well as social level.

Mr Gilani talked about need for declaring an AI emergency in the country other wise we would be outcompeted in almost all spheres by other countries and will create winners and losers within Pakistan.
