Every tile in this image is a website I built. I did not upload a single one of them.
The portfolio takes its own photographs. It visits each site, captures what is actually on the screen today, and replaces yesterday's picture. When a client redesigns something I handed over three years ago, the portfolio quietly updates itself. I find out because the image changed.
Getting that wrong is easy, and I did. For a while it was storing beautifully sharp screenshots of "403 - Forbidden", a GoDaddy domain-for-sale page, and one hosting account that had been suspended — and serving them to clients as examples of my work. It had never occurred to me to check the HTTP status before taking the picture.
It does now. If a site cannot be photographed properly, nothing is stored at all. A blank card is honest. A crisp screenshot of someone else's error page is not.
Six years of client work, and this is the first time I have been able to see it all in one place.
198 built. 61 already gone. These are the ones still standing.
