Handmade by Rehel is a women's empowerment program to help and support women with school-going children. This is an extension program of our The Rainbow School System (TRSS) - a free school initiative for deprived communities. During the initial period of TRSS, we noticed the fluctuation in the attendance of children coming to school. We investigated, we found that these children were sent to work
in houses and shops as domestic maids. Further investigations revealed that the children were paid a misery sum of about Rs.2000/- or lesser depending on the age of the child. Many children were also traumatized because they were either physically or mentally abused. In order to help stop this from happening to children, the Women Empowerment Program was created. Rehel invests in the raw material, training and marketing the end product. Women are paid a stipend during training and afterwards earn from making the products. Although the benefits are many folds as it involves the whole community of the children. Most importantly, we have managed to keep the children in school where they belong. All products are made by the community for the community. 100% profit from sale of items go to Rehel's programs for disadvantaged children.
