Starting a business is hard

But the alternative terrifies me

40 years

— Stuck in a 9-5
— Hating what I do
— With people I don’t like
— Building someone else’s dream.

My version of hell.

I’d take 12 months of pain to buy my freedom

And create the life of my dreams

Every time.

Writing compelling copy is tough.

You’re expected to:

- Grab attention immediately
- Keep the audience engaged
- Convey the message clearly
- Persuade the reader to take action

But it’s (actually) really simple:

- Be Authentic
- Understand your audience's needs
- Craft a clear and concise message

Writing great copy isn’t actually that hard.

You’ve just been told that it is.

It’s about connecting with your audience and delivering a message that resonates with them.

P.S. What’s the best piece of copy you’ve ever read?

5 Things I Wish I Had Known When I First Started with Copywriting.

1) There isn't one writing style that fits all audiences. 🖋️

Some audiences respond better to formal language, while others prefer a casual tone - you never know until you test it out.

For example, many of my campaigns did great with a conversational style, while others only worked when I switched to a more formal tone.

2) There's no universal headline. 📢

Just like with writing style, you have to try different headlines to find your winner.

What works for one campaign might fail for another.

I've had lots of clever headlines that didn't perform as well as simple, straightforward ones.

3) Copy length is just as unpredictable. 📄

You might think a short, direct message will do the trick, but sometimes longer, detailed copy works better.

It's all about trying different lengths to see what gets results.

For instance, long-form sales pages have often worked better than brief product descriptions in my e-commerce campaigns.

4) CTA variations also matter. 🖱️

Are you only using "Buy Now"?

Have you tried different CTAs like "Learn More," "Get Started," or "Join Us"?

You might be surprised at what drives the best results.

In many cases, switching to a softer CTA has led to higher engagement than a direct sales pitch.

5) Testing different angles can make or break your copy. 🔍

Sometimes, focusing on the benefits works wonders.

Other times, highlighting the problem and its solution resonates more with the audience.

No matter how great your copy is, I've seen campaigns fail when the angle didn't match the audience's pain points or desires.

These are just a few things I've learned through my journey.

Some thoughts on handling client feedback in copywriting:

1. Your goal isn't to compromise your voice. It's to align your vision with the client's needs.

2. Being flexible without losing integrity is the best feedback strategy.

3. Clear communication is the only way to ensure mutual understanding.

"Copywriting is more about psychology than writing skills."

Is it, though?

This is the mantra shouted by every marketing psychologist.

All to get you to focus on human behavior.

(mind games)

But is that really how YOU write compelling copy?

Do you ignore grammar and style? Or master them?
Do you skip word choice? Or choose words carefully?
Do you rely only on psychological triggers? Or balance them with writing techniques?
Do you overlook storytelling? Or craft engaging narratives?
Do you dismiss creativity? Or embrace it fully?

Did you even analyze the last piece of copy you wrote?

People respond to well-crafted messages.

Psychology, yes.
But mostly strong writing skills.

Now, I'm not saying you should ignore psychology completely.

Your copy needs to be persuasive and relatable.
Something people can connect with.

But most of the compelling messages you create?

They are NOT because of psychology alone.

They are due to a blend of excellent writing and psychological insights.

Something you should perfect in your writing process.

If you want to truly captivate your audience.

Are you playing to win, or are you playing not to lose?

The difference is everything.

Every day we face one critical choice:

Stay within our comfort zone or face the challenges.

Most people play it safe, seeking comfort over challenge.

But true growth happens outside of comfort. It demands pushing beyond our current limits.

So how do you step out of your comfort zone?

Simply by Implementing these 3 powerful strategies:

1. Embrace Discomfort

Those who achieve greatness. Are not afraid of discomfort.

They understand that growth comes from challenging experiences.

Here's how you can embrace discomfort:

- Identify situations that make you uncomfortable.

- Commit to facing them head-on regularly.

- Reflect on your experiences and progress.

- Use your reflections to drive continuous improvement.

2. Seek New Experiences

Expose yourself to new and diverse experiences. They will expand your horizons and fire up personal growth.

Even if they seem daunting.
Embrace them with an open mind.

- Set a goal to try something new every week.

- Choose activities outside your usual routine.

- Reflect on what you learn and how you grow.

You'll find yourself becoming more adaptable and resilient.

3. Surround Yourself with Growth-Minded Individuals

The people around you influence your mindset.
Choose to be around those who inspire and challenge you.

By surrounding yourself with growth-minded individuals.
You’ll stay motivated and driven.

-Identify mentors and people who push you to grow.

-Engage in meaningful conversations with them.

-Learn from their experiences and perspectives.

Leverage their insights to fuel your growth journey.

Remember:

Staying comfortable is easy.
But the magic happens outside of your comfort zone.
