Is Ecommerce a Solution?
Fortunes are built during the down market and collected in the up market. (Jason Calacanis – Launch Ticker founder, investor, and author)
The economy of Pakistan is facing music due to a series of amateurish decisions. In the past years, there are many people who are struggling to promote start-up culture in Pakistan. The country is full of new opportunities but not favorable for startups. On one side it is a popular opinion that tough times are good for making a business successful because a business becomes more adaptable to changes but the government has to support the people in this regard. People can put effort but everyone is bound according to their means. The government has maximum resources and individuals choose politicians to make well-thought-out decisions for them.
The IT industry was going towards a boom in recent years due to the free float of the dollar. The IT people are getting benefits more than other people. More people are investing in these startups. The e-commerce sector is also in limelight in this situation. The entrepreneurs started thinking and finding easy ways for buying and selling online. In 2021, Pakistan has become the 37th largest e-commerce market with a revenue of $5.9 billion. The world e-commerce market increased by 45% in 2021 and Pakistan contributed 15% to it. The investors were looking at the population of 220 million (out of which around 100 million have access to the internet) like a cream cake. In every country, investors want some securities against their money. The governments gave them relief in taxes and offer them facilities so that they put their money into their country.
The situation here is tough, the people are plugging away but the political instability and lack of interest of the government in the affairs of the common man are ruining the country. Everyone knew that we want more dollars in our country and there are a lot of products which we can sell to the world. Our labor is extremely hard working they just need better direction. The poet M. Iqbal said for this nation, “Zara Naam ho tou ye mit’ti bari zarkhaiz hai saqi” (a little rain and you can harvest here). The culture of Pakistan is diverse and conventional, the startups like airlift need to understand the local market in a better way. This is 2022 and our economy is on the ventilator. We need to give it the oxygen of IT so that it will recover. There is a huge market in the world which we can target for our products and services. We need to develop the trust of the people as they don’t rely on our reputation. Every individual effort matters in this journey.
