Former Keeper Louis Crayton: Charles Taylor Government Fully Funded 2002 National Team
Former Liberia national team goalkeeper Louis B. Crayton Jr. has publicly countered recent historical narratives, asserting that the administration of former President Charles Taylor entirely financed the Lone Star’s major expenses during their 2002 African Cup of Nations and World Cup qualifying campaigns.
Taking to Facebook to caution the public against attempts to rewrite history, the 2002 squad member specified that the Taylor government covered everything from the jerseys they wore to their accommodations at the Kings Lodge on 9th Street and all team meals.
Crayton further detailed the financial payouts of the era, noting that international travel expenses were heavily backed, with overseas-based players receiving US$5,000 each and former President George Weah who served as the team's technical director at the time receiving US$10,000 upon joining the squad.
Challenging anyone to dispute these claims, Crayton stated that this financial backing represents factual evidence that can be verified by any player on that historic roster, specifically naming former football administrator Edwin Snowe.
These revelations have reignited long-standing debates regarding the true source of funding and the complex intersection of politics and sports during a pivotal era in Liberian football history.
