Etymology The city was founded in 1457 as Edo Castle. In 1869, during the Meiji Restoration, the capital of the state was moved to Edo and the city was renamed To: kyo: (Japanese 東京), which means "eastern capital" in Japanese, the kanji 東 (onyomi: to:) "east" and 京 (on'yomi: kyo:) "capital".
