📱 Publishers bring vertical video back to their sites

Leading media companies are now integrating TikTok-style vertical video feeds directly into their websites to regain control over user engagement and monetization.

Brands like BBC, The New York Times, Bild, USA Today, Hearst, TIME, People, and TMB have already launched on-site vertical video streams, aiming to keep audiences within their own ecosystems instead of sending them to social platforms.

While demand for vertical video across the open web is still emerging, DSPs and media agencies are actively preparing to buy this format outside the walled gardens, expecting it to grow into a significant new opportunity.

📈 Early results look promising: publishers are seeing deeper session engagement and 3–5x higher eCPMs compared to traditional display — driven by stronger relevance and higher user attention.

And with search traffic declining due to AI-generated summaries, vertical video is becoming a key strategy for strengthening audience loyalty and increasing on-site time.

⚖️ The US v. Google ad-tech antitrust trial has finished.
Closing arguments are done, and now a federal judge will decide the future of Google’s sell-side ad business — a decision the whole industry is watching.

The DOJ’s core argument is straightforward: Google gained an unfair edge by controlling key parts of the programmatic stack (DFP, AdX, and buying tools), giving it the power to influence auctions in ways that limit competition and reduce publisher revenue.

Google sees it differently. They argue the market is already highly competitive — with Amazon, Meta, The Trade Desk, and many others fighting for the same budgets. In their view, breaking up the stack wouldn’t help anyone — just disrupt what they believe is an efficient system.

⏳ Now we wait for the ruling. The DOJ is asking for structural changes, which could mean forcing Google to separate parts of its ad-tech business — something that would be historic for digital advertising.

Regardless of the outcome, the case is already pushing the industry toward more transparency, openness, and healthier competition across the stack👐

We believe that a healthier ecosystem benefits everyone — publishers, advertisers, and technology partners- and follow this case closely as it could shape how the market operates in the near future.

📊 New IAB Research: AI Is Transforming Advertising — But Is the Industry Ready?

has become part of everyday marketing. More than 50% of marketers already use GenAI for creative content and targeting, and 58% plan to expand its use in the next year — especially for creative generation and audience engagement.

But with growth come challenges:
▪️ 70% have already experienced AI-related issues — from hallucinated or biased outputs to off-brand content.
▪️37% of consumers worry that they may distrust AI-generated ads.
▪️60% support labeling AI-generated content to boost transparency.
▪️Only 6% believe current safeguards are enough — most call for new tools, standards, and audits to ensure integrity, privacy, and fairness.

🇵🇹 Rainy and windy — but the program was intense and full of energy 💪

This year came with the usual superlatives: more than 70,000 people, over a dozen stages, and thousands of start-ups from all over the world.

And of course — everywhere.
But unlike previous years, the conversations weren’t about what AI might achieve someday, but about how companies are actually using it today.

👉 One question kept coming up again and again:
How do you build real trust between customers and AI-powered products?
Speakers highlighted transparency, clear guardrails, and giving users more control as the foundation for trustworthy adoption.

Another strong theme this year: the presence of China.

🤖 Web Summit 2025 showcased some of the world’s most advanced humanoid robots — all developed by Chinese teams. Many of the leading AI model creators on stage were also from China, and unlike Western systems from OpenAI or Anthropic, these models are open source. In CEO Jensen Huang’s words, this openness could allow China to move faster than the US and Europe in the global AI race.

Beyond that, there were lively discussions about the future of media, the creator economy, sustainability tech, and how AI is reshaping everyday workflows — fewer meetings, more outcomes, and more time for strategic and creative work.

🤖 As AI tools increasingly rely on publisher content for training and responses, IAB Tech Lab has launched the AI Content Monetization Protocols (CoMP) — a new framework to help publishers protect their IP and license content to AI companies fairly and transparently.

The initiative aims to:
▫️Give publishers control over how AI systems access and use their content.
▫️Build tools to block or manage unauthorized AI bots.
▫️Create a framework for content licensing through a transparent marketplace.
▫️ Adapt familiar programmatic concepts (like deal IDs or logs) to manage these new transactions.

⚠️Why is it so important now?

Publishers are already losing traffic and ad revenue as AI tools pull data directly from their sites. Without proper safeguards, the open web and its advertising ecosystem could face real challenges.

So far, AI companies haven’t actively joined the discussion, though collaboration is vital to keep quality content accessible and sustainable.
