🎙️ Asynchronous Video Messaging: A New Modality of Workplace Communication
Communication research has begun examining short-form asynchronous video messaging (e.g., recorded screen-and-voice updates) as a hybrid modality combining the contextual richness of video with the flexibility of asynchronous text. Preliminary studies suggest this format reduces meeting frequency while preserving nonverbal cues such as tone and facial expression that text-based communication lacks. Adoption barriers include increased production self-consciousness among some employees and a lack of standardized organizational norms governing response-time expectations.
