Happy birthday Andy Warhol! Never should be too late to celebrate such an iconic legend. Say Marilyn Monroe, Coca-Cola, and Campbell’s soup on breath and you will reply: Andy Warhol.
* 🎨
Born on August 6 of 1928, he was one of the most influential, prolific, and popular artists of his time and many generations ahead. The son of immigrants became an American icon. He was a shy gay man who became the hub of New York’s social scene and became an artist who embraced consumerism, celebrity, and the counterculture - and changed modern art in the process.
•🎨
Initially working as a commercial illustrator, his skill at transforming the imagery of American culture soon found his realization in his ground-breaking pop art resulting in many iconic images besides those of Marilyn Monroe, Coca-Cola, and Campbell’s soup cans.
•🎨
On his aesthetics, he used both avant-garde and highly commercial sensibilities. Warhol was a successful magazine and ad illustrator who became the leading artist of the 1960’s Pop art movements. He ventured into a wide variety of art forms, including filmmaking, video installations, and writing, and controversially blurred the lines between fine art and mainstream aesthetics.
•🎨
His legacy has been embodied not only in advertising but in the art and culture of generations to come.
Warhol died on February 22, 1987, in New York City.
