My name is Olena Bakalo and since 2018 I'm the co-owner and director of iplace digital agency in Portugal.

Since February 24, 2022 my life has changed like millions of other Ukrainians. A month of sleepless nights, volunteering, helping to evacuate relatives and friends and many other things that even in my worst dreams I never thought I would have to do.

Of course, I will not stop my volunteering, but I want to continue actively working.

Part of our team is relatively safe in western Ukraine, some in Europe, and also the Portuguese office team remains actively engaged. We are all fired up to win and clearly understand that we are ready to fully resume the work of our offices.

We are willing and able to work as a digital agency for businesses in Europe, to share our experience, to offer our digital solutions.

What we do the best:
- Digital strategy
- Analytics and recommendations for ongoing campaigns
- Media planning and placement
- Performance marketing
- Creation and implementation of SMM strategies
- Training of teams / Webinars on various digital marketing topics

We continue to collect facts about Instagram from our book. Here are eight more of the most interesting ones. 🤓

☝ Instagram was introduced to the public in October 2010. And it immediately became very popular: by the end of the first day of its launch it was used by 25 thousand people, and by the end of the first week it was already 100 thousand. Six weeks later Instagram gained the love of 2 million people.

☝ Soon the first giant brands such as Pepsi, Starbucks, Pl***oy, National Public Radio, CNN and others had their Instagram accounts.

☝ The first celebrity to post his Instagram photo was rapper Snoop Dogg. In the photo, he was wearing a formal suit and holding a can of C**t 45 in his hands. It was the first so-called promotional integration.

☝ In 2011, Justin Bieber joined Instagram and when he posted his first picture, the servers were under great strain. Because after this publication, 50 people per minute started to subscribe to Bieber's account. By the way, the star often "crashed" Instagram servers, because Bieber had a lot of fans and they all followed him closely on social networks. Later, they would even allocate half of the server for his account.

☝ Bieber's manager even wanted to earn from the popularity of his ward and offered the owners of the application to pay Justin for the content or for him to become the investor. Otherwise, the singer would stop using Instagram. But Systrom, the app's owner, refused both the investment and the idea of paying anything. He didn't want any commerce yet.

☝ Jared Leto was also declined to invest in Instagram.

☝ Over time, Instagram became full of "bad" content: in addition to insults and bullying, people posted photos of su***de attempts, child nudity, and animal cruelty. Some also promoted bulimia and anorexia. To combat this, two Instagram employees, Riedel and Zollman, personally tracked all the malicious content. There was a lot of it, so they worked in shifts.

☝ In 2012, former U.S. President Barack Obama joined Instagram.

Bogdan Levchenko, iplace CEO, wrote a column for Ukrainian media MC.today about how iplace started its long way in 2011 from media buying and grew in 10 years into a digital agency which is trusted by big Ukrainian companies. Such as Eldorado, Varus, Watsons, Winner, Luxoptika, Kovalskaya and many others.

Thanks to the coordinated work with the team and the proper building of relationships with customers, we became the iplace we always dreamed of. ♥ All of this has brought us many insights, here are the most important ones:

☝ In crisis times, never conceal from your team that the company is having a hard time. Talk honestly with people; they appreciate it and are willing to help. Together, you will easily get through the hard times.

☝ Make time for your team. The more you invest in people, the more you get back.

☝ People who promote big brands need to be engaged, with a great desire to influence clients' business, proactive, and not afraid to make mistakes.

☝ And you also need to see every advertising project winning Effie or any other nomination. It motivates you to do your job at 200%!

☝ Take on those projects with which you have exactly the right "chemistry". Then your relationships with your clients will be as productive as possible.

You think you know everything about Instagram? You sure don't! ☝️

In 2020, Sarah Fryer's book "No Filter. The Story of Instagram" was published. This book has won many awards and prizes. 🏆 For example, it was the Financial Times and McKinsey business publication of the year, while Fortune named it the most fascinating book about the Silicon Valley drama.

We've chosen some of the most interesting and motivating facts from the book that you definitely didn't know. Each week we'll publish 10 of them as a selection.

⭐ More than 1 billion people visit Instagram every month.
⭐ Instagram became the first mobile app in history to be valued at $1 billion.
⭐ According to Dovetale, an analytics company, more than 200 million Instagram users have 50,000+ followers.
⭐ Less than 0.01% of users have more than a million.
⭐ With the appearance of Instagram, Batman Alley (Beco do Batman), an open-air art space, has become one of the most tourist spots in São Paulo, Brazil. Here locals offer tourists the services of "personal paparazzi" and for $40 they are ready to take photos of them for Instagram for two hours.
⭐ The popular Kardashian family even has a schedule of activities for Instagram, because they all collaborate with global brands and constantly promote something for them.
⭐ The first Instagram prototype was called Scotch (after the Scotch drink). The theme of alcohol without vowels really appealed to the app's founders, Krieger and Systrom. By the way, Systrom's first mobile site was also called in an alcoholic way, Burbn (bourbon).
⭐ Then they wanted to rename Scotch to Whsky ("whiskey"), but this name would hardly explain the purpose of the app, in which people shared photos. So for a while, the project was called Codename.
⭐ The very first Instagram filter was called the X-Pro ll. It was a reference to the analog method of developing photos, a cross-process where photographers use chemical reagents.
⭐ And the first publication appeared on the app in July 2010. It showed a sand-colored dog.

Did you know anything of this?

Next week check for another portion of facts about Insta! 😉 There is more interesting in our book.

Valentin Sinkevych, New Business Manager iplace: "iplace — is the top agency in Ukraine, thinking broadly and globally!" 🔥

We have been thinking and thinking and decided: it's time to gradually introduce you to the Ukrainian and Portuguese iplace teams! To tell you what the iplace team is all about, what their goals are, what they dream about, how they manage to work with the largest companies in Ukraine and Portugal and do it effectively. We want you to know about us a bit more than you know now. Shall we begin? 👉

And the first person we talked to is our newbiz, Valentin Sinkevych (or just Valik). The newbiz for iplace is the person who makes the agency grow and get the best clients. In simple words: Valik has been our Development Director in our Ukrainian office for a year and a half now. Participation in tenders, strategic planning, communication with Ukrainian business, excellent presentations, wit and a lots, no, not so, a very lot of humor - perhaps, all the coolest qualities that a new-biz should have were combined in our Valik. And yes, we are lucky to have him. 😉

We spoke about what you can love about iplace, what is going on in the tender market of Ukraine in 2021, what the right tender timing should be and how a business can understand that the "chemistry" with the agency did took place.

We share the fiery case 🔥 of the Ukrainian department of iplace. Together with the client, the Luxoptiсa chain of optical stores, they exceeded the planned KPI for target audience coverage by 27% due to targeted audience development and even generated twice as much traffic for further transactional campaigns.

In order to cover the most interested in the new product audience they chose more than 30 relevant targeting types for five advertising tools. And we also used a warm base of contacts: those people who had bought lenses, glasses and medications at Luxoptica before, as well as those who had had their eyes checked here at least once or had recently signed up for a checkup.

Then they set up look-alike targeting on the existing bases: it was important to attract to the new product the attention of an audience similar in behavior and other characteristics to the current clients.

As a result, they were able to hit the target audience as accurately as possible and for 1.5 months of advertising campaign:

👉 covered 3,601,919 users ↑,
👉 got 11 027 048 impressions ↑,
👉 and 43,392 clicks in our ads ↑.

How they did it? Welcome to case: https://bit.ly/3GCkU0I.

APCL and Havas Project Grand Prize at Effectiveness Awards 2021 📣

The 17th Effectiveness Awards 2021 ceremony was held at the end of November. The best representatives of the Portuguese advertising and communications market presented their projects here.

The top prize went to the Lisbon Association for Cerebral Paralysis for its "Filled by Palsy" project. This is a project that APCL implemented together with Havas Lisboa and Havas Media creative agency. Its essence is as follows: APCL helped Portuguese entrepreneurs fill out their tax returns by providing a team of accountants with cerebral palsy. In return, the entrepreneurs could donate 0.5% of their tax return to the association.

The results were astounding: APCL received a record number of donations in the history of their existence!

Olena Bakalo, CEO of iplace Portugal: "I am amazed at what APCL and Havas have done! It's the kind of project that should win, because it's not just creativity for creativity's sake. This is a project that brought real help to people who need it badly.

I would like to say that not only in Europe do such useful things. Ukraine, where I am from, also actively supports social projects with creativity.

For example, in a week, on December 15, Effie Awards Ukraine 2021 will be held in Ukraine. It is one of the most prestigious awards in the world in marketing communications industry! By the way, my colleague Bohdan Levchenko, CEO of iplace Ukraine, is a member of the Effie Ukraine jury this year: he has been evaluating the first two rounds of the award.

The short list of the Ukrainian contest program for 2021 includes a lot of social projects, connected with help and charity. Last year, 2020, the project of the largest Ukrainian online retailer Rozetka got the bronze of Effie Awards Ukraine. Here is what they came up with: Ukrainians could "hang" food assistance kits for lonely pensioners on the retailer's website. In a month and a half the Ukrainians gave pensioners 60 000 such sets, they were distributed in 24 cities of the country. After that Rozetka was among the TOP 3 brands that took care of Ukrainians during the pandemic.

I am proud that Ukrainians support such important topics and I hope that there will be more projects like this! And it will be very interesting to see which Ukrainian social projects will make it to the finals this year."
