Shopyard – Exhibition Design & Visual Communication · 2025

Shopyard’s visual identity was designed as a bridge between curatorial thinking, architecture, and the public experience. The challenge? Bringing clarity and cohesion to a fragmented commercial space while building a strong, unified identity.

We created a system where colour, typography, and layout work together. The exhibition unfolds across three thematic axes, each defined by a distinct colour that intuitively guides visitors through the space. Shaded text blocks enhance readability and allow content to adapt seamlessly across walls, floors, windows, and temporary structures.

The result is a flexible yet consistent visual language that scales from bold spatial gestures to detailed texts, reflecting the evolving nature of shopping centres and supporting Shopyard’s vision to rethink these spaces within today’s urban and cultural landscape.

Rituals, From Courtship to Marriage · 2025

As a graphic system, the Love Handkerchief can be understood as both message and medium: a visual declaration of affection in which composition, technique, and meaning are inseparable.

It operates within a defined spatial structure—a square format that establishes both boundary and rhythm. The composition is typically organized from the edges inward, where cross-stitched verses trace the perimeter to form a textual frame. This border functions simultaneously as decoration and narrative device, guiding the eye, enclosing meaning, and reinforcing the idea of devotion as something carefully constructed and contained.

At the center, a heart motif consistently anchors the composition, acting as both visual and symbolic core. Around it, all other elements are arranged in relation. The hierarchy is clear: text constructs the framework, ornament reinforces it, and the heart consolidates meaning.

Rituals, From Courtship to Marriage · 2025

Courtship and marriage rituals in Northern Portugal during the 19th and 20th centuries reveal a clear divide between urban elites and rural communities. While the bourgeoisie followed a “theatre of manners,” guided by non-verbal codes—such as the symbolic use of fans, gloves, and opera glasses—and marriages strategically arranged through formal dowry contracts; in rural communities courtships often emerged in contexts of collective labor—such as “desfolhadas” and “espadeladas”—and were sealed through the exchange of love handkerchiefs or carved objects.

This context informs the visual language of the two exhibitions. One adopts a festive, popular atmosphere inspired by the colors of these “objects of love”, while the other—structured into ten moments—maintains a consistent, restrained system, using a single color to highlight the displayed pieces.

Rituals, From Courtship to Marriage · 2025

Courtship and marriage were central rites of passage across all social classes in late 19th- to mid-20th-century northern Portuguese society, rooted in community life among the popular classes, and shaped as strategic alliances by family authority and economic interests among the elites. Presented across two locations — Museu do Traje and Museu de Artes Decorativas, Viana do Castelo — the exhibition explores these contrasting perspectives through their rituals and symbolism, drawing visual inspiration from Love Handkerchiefs, delicate tokens of affection, commitment, and respect.

CAE — Centro de Artes e Espetáculos · 2022 - 2026

The visual identity for CAE Vale de Cambra emerges from the building itself and its relationship with the city. The architectural façade, defined by a modular grid of vertical and horizontal alignments, volumes, shadows, and reflections, became the starting point for the entire graphic system.

This structural logic was translated into a flexible visual language based on modular compositions and geometric rigor. The identity reflects the idea of a cultural center as a mutable, diverse, and constantly evolving space capable of hosting different artistic expressions while maintaining a strong and coherent presence.

Rather than relying on fixed colors or rigid layouts, the system embraces adaptability. Color, imagery, and pattern respond to each context, allowing the identity to shift in tone and atmosphere according to the cultural experience being communicated. This elasticity ensures clarity, recognizability, and consistency across all applications, from institutional communication to event promotion.

Braga 25 – Portuguese Capital of Culture · 2025

More than a static visual identity, the graphic system for Braga 25 was conceived as a critical communication tool. Rather than creating an image from scratch, the project required the ability to listen to an existing graphic legacy and project it into a new institutional, cultural, and temporal context. The central challenge was to articulate the visual heritage of Braga’s bid for European Capital of Culture 2027 with the city’s newly implemented institutional identity.

The resulting system establishes a balance between recognition and renewal. Built upon inherited principles, the framework was refined into a flexible and coherent visual language, capable of aligning with the new municipal image while preserving public familiarity. Typography, colour, and composition operate as a modular system, allowing the tool to adapt across a wide range of formats, projects, and cultural expressions.

Designed to function across multiple contexts and scales, the system covered institutional communication, event promotion, projects supported by the programme, editorial materials, merchandising, public spaces, and digital media. Throughout the year, this communication engine demonstrated its capacity to adapt to thematic cycles, independent projects, and diverse collaborations, always maintaining a common foundation of recognition and graphic consistency.

João Machado - Visual Poetics · 2025

Responding to the curatorial challenge, the exhibition was conceived in accordance with the scenarios proposed by the curators. In dialogue with the building, the exhibition unfolds on a single level, organized around a vast double-height space that places it in direct dialogue with the MUDE permanent exhibition, located on the lower floor.

A large continuous canvas surface extends horizontally, structured along the column system of the open-plan hall. This element configures new spaces and accommodates titles, curatorial and contextual texts, as well as a compilation of graphic works.

This canvas surface is accompanied by a series of display tables and display cases, where original and significant works—fundamental to understanding João Machado’s work—are presented.

Complementing the exhibition, a series of supports house digital systems for exploring additional content, presenting “moving” posters, and an exploratory digital game in which visitors can interact with and deconstruct some of Machado’s posters.
Within the double-height space, a large wall that dominates the entire area continuously projects a selection of posters, reinforcing the relationship between this exhibition and the MUDE collection.

Semibreve · 2025

Semibreve is an exploratory electronic music and digital art festival taking place in Braga, Portugal. Since 2011 Semibreve has consistently presented a forward-thinking programme featuring some of the most revered electronic music and cross-disciplinary work by artists from around the world, as well as maintaining an active role in the promotion of the digital arts in Portugal. Semibreve prides itself on curating a carefully-considered programme that is challenging and accessible. Semibreve’s emphasis on its stunning site-specific locations and world-class venues, together with a shared ethos centred around inclusiveness and community, by promoting a diverse programme at an affordable ticket price, has brought about sold-out events and well-deserved international acclaim.

The graphic identity of the 2025 edition set out to visually reflect the relationship between sound, space, and perception. This year, information moved away from being a static element and adopted an experimental behaviour, responding to music and its rhythms. By allowing graphic elements to be affected by sound, communication became part of the festival’s artistic experience. The visual identity thus became another field of experimentation, in direct dialogue with Semibreve’s musical and conceptual programme.

Espaço José Rentes de Carvalho · 2025

José Rentes de Carvalho, born in Vila Nova de Gaia, built a literary path shaped by displacement, observation, and a deep connection to place. Living between Portugal, Brazil, Paris, and Amsterdam, his work reflects both local memory and a broader cultural perspective, positioning him as one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary Portuguese literature.

The exhibition dedicated to the author was conceived as a space of encounter between his life, his work, and the city that shaped him. The design process began with the content itself, manuscripts, books, personal documents, and objects. The exhibition structures emerged as a direct response to what needed to be shown, allowing each element to find its place naturally within the space and guiding visitors through a quiet, sequential narrative.

Typography, scale, and composition echo an editorial sensibility, translating the author’s literary universe into a spatial experience. Bold typographic moments coexist with more discreet textual layers, creating a rhythm that invites both contemplation and close reading.

Festival de Setembro • 2025

The word “Co(m)fluences” speaks to the energy born where cultures meet – currents touching, merging, and flowing onward together. Those who share a space carry their own paths, their own identities, and together they form a vivid plurality. From this idea emerges a visual language that feels fluid – almost mist-like or liquid – echoing the way people mingle and cross, creating something larger in their wake: a living stain, a shared community.
