As we digest the results of the presidential debate, one thing is clear: influencers and independent media are having an outsized impact on the election. As noted by recent research by the Reuters Institute Digital Report, many people are getting their news from social media, which is driving them away from fact-checked, mainstream media. The result, however, is that this is also reinforcing our beliefs, helping the spread of misinformation, and keeping us inside our filter bubbles.

Another reason to build your own community: This weekend, Twitter/X was banned in Brazil due to accounts linked to far-right disinformation. This meant that, all of a sudden, 40 million Brazilians, roughly one-fifth of the population, were blocked access to the social media platform.

Competitors Bluesky and Threads gained millions of Brazilian X users overnight, and many lost their main channel for corporate communications.

While we do not expect this to happen in the USA or in Europe, it's another reminder of the fragility of social media platforms and the importance of building your own channels using email newsletters or online community platforms.

In this context, the recommendation by content marketing expert Joe Pulizzi has never been more relevant: "Don't build your content house on rented land." 😉
