🍽️ a relaxed family friendly Saturday lunch🍽️

Mila Rosewood Doha might one of the more underrated five star venues in the city, despite its accolades.

This brunch, a collaboration with the excellent Torba Market سوق تربة team , sees produce from their farm incorporated into the Saturday lunch menu. It’s a relaxed, family friendly experience, with a kids play area and a select number of vendors from Torba’s popular market.

The menu is fresh and leans heavily into the Chef’s Lebanese repertoire. Salads and starters are to share, with an umami laden carob carrot salad with whipped feta being among the stars. We made fast work of this gorgeous tangle of flavors and textures. Diners then choose between two soups - this week a carrot or a summery tomato take.

You then choose one of the mains, all from the chargrill but with different flavor profiles. I devoured the tender Australian beef and pepper skewers dressed with a herby chimichurri. But the grilled half chicken, the skin perfectly charred, its sweetness being drawn out by a side of a corn puree, was also a hit.

Desserts are more bites and come as a plate to share, the centerpiece being a bijoux baklava cheesecake. Service is attentive and the chef is very interactive and chatty. And that dining room is lovely in the day time with view of the water.

This is a thoughtful and well executed collaboration and one we need to see more of in Doha.

🇮🇳 India Days 3 and 4 - food, shopping, more food 🇮🇳
Foodies, I am remiss not posting this earlier. But life…
The final few days in India were a blur of travel and food.

Heading down from the mountains and into Delhi after an incredible time at Naar, still triggered by those winding roads - horn please), we checked into the hotel and then slid into The Pot Belly in south Delhi for a late night dinner.

This is a champion of Bihari cuisine, a new one for me, it is wholesome, homely, and soulful. Dining with a chef means we ordered the entire menu, but a standout was a bowl of Litti Mutton. This is a rustic, hearty, and comforting pairing featuring Litti (roasted wheat flour balls stuffed with spiced sattu or roasted gram flour) served alongside slow-cooked mutton curry.

The following day saw us eating again (warning - there are three, very full meals here), with a South Indian breakfast stop to fuel up forbore a day of sightseeing and shopping. On the menu was Mangalore buns, a revelation for me, this seasoned visitor to India. These are a a deep-fried, mildly sweet, and fluffy bread made with mashed ripe bananas, flour, and a hint of cumin.
And of course, there was dosa. Always dosa.

A quick, heat affected trip to Humayun’s Tomb, before seeking shelter in the Khan Market. I promised restraint, but was thwarted by the shoe shops and the fabric store.

Lunch, was a good old fashioned Indian Chinese feast at Ichiban, a vast menu, refined by our hosts to the essentials. Chili chicken, sweet and sour, lots of noodles. Heaven.

A Delhi downpour and it was back to the hotel to recalibrate my actual baggage and own emotional baggage (shower, nap, call my beloved) before the main event, dinner at the acclaimed Inja.

Chef Advait Anantwar’s restaurant is an enticing fusion of Japanese and Indian food. No butter chicken here, just sublime flavors and, a show. Among the highlights, Hokkaido scallops, “panta bhat”. The scallops are torched and served nestled in cooked rice soaked and fermented in water; with natto, or fermented soybeans.

The result is something so intensely savoury yet wholesome. There is so much more to write about this meal (including that crab dish in the photos) - on the blog soon.

We need the trip as it began, with food. A stop at Havemore for their legendary butter chicken, accompanied by shards garlicky naan. It was everything I needed, before bidding farewell.

🍷 Weeknight (and weekend) happy hour you need to try 🍸
Foodies, I had a meeting Le Royal Méridien Doha (Lusail) and timed it perfectly for their daily Apertivo Classico.

This is offered daily from 5pm to 7pm in ADRIFT Anda, and I have to say, is incredible value. QR95 for three drinks (off a select menu) which included a choice from four cocktails; two wines and two beers plus, a pretty sizable charcuterie board.

The one pictured is for two people. The good thing is, this is offered every day but Sunday (when the restaurant is closed). Another positive, the wines are NOT Table Mountain.

I had to resist the urge to head to Vendome next door afterwards for a wine induced attack of the shoppies.

The restaurant itself is a bit of an underrated spot, so this is a chance to give it a try!

The details:
📌 Aperitivo Classico at ANDA Adrift
⏰Monday to Saturday 5pm to 7pm
💰 QR95 for three drinks and a platter
🍷 some nice wines but also, Negroni
🧀 and yes the board is generous and cheese heavy
🎶background music, buzzy vibe when busy
📝 this would be great for a group catch up

Foodies,
I spent three months - and an embarrassing amount of QRs - subscribing to every delivery app in Doha so you don't have to. Talabat Pro vs Rafeeq Pro vs Snoonu Plus vs Keeta's no-subscription price war: who actually wins? The honest verdict is on my Substack now.

Foodies, friends and family

Day 100

It feels surreal to type that. But it HAS been 100 days since this conflict (or whatever we are calling it) started. Does it feel longer? And while it has been quiet in Qatar there is still a vague hum. Do we call it anxiety? Uneasiness. I don't know what to label it.

Life has continued, back to familiarity - Eid has come and gone. Schools are back, for a few weeks. There's traffic, of sorts.

Some people have traveled, others stayed put. The usual rounds of summer farewells. We are all just going about our business, one eye, warily on the still unfolding news, especially about recent attacks on our neighbors.

So, it being 100 days, I thought I would just check in. Say hi. How are you?

🇮🇳 day two - food, more food and some views 🇮🇳

The thing about India is that I am always hungry here. Not for lack of food, rather the abundance of flavors and different dishes. Kasauli's food scene blends Himachali Pahari dishes with popular Tibetan and colonial-era street food. The most famous local treats include crispy Bun Samosas, syrupy Gulab Jamuns and we tried both yesterday - and more.

The main tourist area of the mornings like a Kobe’s ke feast, you don’t have to venture too far before the next treat appears.

We started at an unconventional spot serving puffy, thin based Neapolitan style pizza. Dochi is a viral pizza place now with three branches across the area. The pizzas are served steaming from the oven traditional and not so traditional toppings. The favorite was the pepperoni with green chilis, washes down with their equally famed iced coffee.

The beloved bun samosas features a crispy, spiced potato samosa pressed into a warm, toasted burger bun. It’s a carb lovers dream. Also on the menu were handmade momos, the place we popped into served with with a lush curry butter sauce alongside Chinese/Indian stir fried noodles.

The day ended at Naar, which is worthy of its own post. This issue destination dining, set in the mountains, and it’s easy to see why it has generated so much buzz since opening. I am sharing some photos from the dinner - easily one of the highlights hit my last year of dining - but more to come soon!

Hey foodies
I am on a quick trip to India this week - Delhi and a stunning place called Kasauli on Himachal Pradesh. Two flights and a long uphill drive so far.
Some people over on my Instagram already guessed this is a dining side quest - I’m going to the famed Naar restaurant tonight.
Here are some photos from the drive up here - more to come!
