Did you know about a Russian social media called VKontakte? It can be translated as InTouch and it really gives you Facebook vibes when looked at.

VKontakte includes a number of interesting tools (for targeted ads and not only) which you might want to use for your business goals. Here are the top-5:

1) Targeting at Community Subscribers and Active Community Subscribers - unlike Facebook, VKontakte gives us an opportunity to target at public pages - this option is great for segmenting out small specific target groups and interests.

2) Contextual Targeting - selects an audience based on search queries, as well as interaction history with pages, communities and goods on VK, Youla classifieds, OK, the Mail.Ru homepage and content-based media.

3) Interactive Promo Posts - an effective solution for integrated campaigns with high conversion rates in the following steps: Mobile clients only, Full support for all types of interactions (tap | multi tap | swipe | drag'n'drop), Game mechanics to maximize interaction time. It is possible to transfer both to entities inside the VK (chat-bot, mini-app), and to external resources.

4) VK Mini Apps - allows brands to create loyalty programs, images and service solutions like in-platform stores or special projects with interactive mechanics.

5) Chatbots - chatbots can send any type of content: text, images, videos, documents, branded gifts and stickers, as well as different reactions and messages depending on specific actions of the user. The chatbot can be associated with other custom formats, gaining additional benefits when interacting with the user.

📌 5 reasons not to cut your advertising budget during the crisis

1) We are in a unique situation where strong competitors have "eliminated themselves" and now there is a great chance to enter the market and take their place.

2) While the competitors are waiting, you can "steal" their market share and their loyal audience.

3) By refusing to advertise, you risk losing incoming leads and contact with your audience.

4) If competitors do come back, customers will remember you first because you've been in touch all along.

5) To be remembered is easier now - the audience at the "fishless" is attentive to new creatives.

The New Year is so close we can’t help but start celebrating! And bringing some statistics, of course 😉

Yandex company (which we love for their range of awesome digital services) has made a quick pre-holiday research on what people expect to get for the New Year’s, what they get for their friends and family and what they do during the year changing celebrations. We answered the first two questions in the last couple of posts and the 3rd answer is coming below:

According to the New Year’s research:

▫️ 74% of those interviewed are going to spend the New Year at home with their loved ones - with movies and TV shows. One out of every four will be working;
▫️ 52% will be spending time with family and friends;
▫️ 39% will be watching movies and TV shows at home;
▫️ 24% of the surveyed people are going to be working;
▫️ 8% are planning of doing active sports, going to cafes and restaurants;
▫️ 7% are willing to spend their New Year’s day educating or attending cultural events and places like museums, galleries, theatres etc.;
▫️ 5% are going shopping and we are loving this idea!

We’ve already discussed what Russians buy as New Year’s gifts in the previous posts but we never talked about presents for kids. It’s the high time to do it 😉

“Detskiy mir” - translated as Children's’ World is a huge chain of stores selling all kinds of goods for kids. The retail group includes 1,014 stores located in 418 cities and towns in Russia, Kazakhstan and Belarus. According to their statistics the most popular gifts for kids are set of dolls L.O.L (), mega-set for creating slimes, interactive soft toy by FurRealFriends (), blaster Nerf (), game set Hot Wheels (), chemical set Attivio, construction set from Mega Bloks () and "Imaginarium" board game ().

Fun and creative as it should be for kids! But we all know grown-ups like this stuff too 😉 Which of these gifts would you buy for your kids and family?

🎄 Christmas is around the door and it sure is a very merry season for marketers all around the world! Holiday sales, gift promotions and lots of fuss over food and celebration. Have you ever wondered how people celebrate Christmas in Russia and how the traditions reflect on marketing strategies? Let’s see!

⚡️ In Russia New Year is celebrated over Christmas. Meanwhile in Europe Christmas is the big thing and the New Year’s Day comes as a “bonus”, in Russia it’s the opposite. This comes from the non-religious USSR: religious holidays were prohibited back then but people didn’t wan’t to give up the traditions of celebrating, so most of the Christmas attributes transformed to be New Year’s.

✔️ Why is this important? The promo communication and campaigns’ dates are different from the European ones - this needs to be noted when planning the promo strategy.

⚡️ Russians have certain preferences about presents. Russians have certain preferences about presents. Of course, they don’t look horse in the mouth, but there are some established things people usually gift to each other. According to the polling service Oprosso Russians choose to buy perfumes (69%), souvenirs (50.7%) and toys (49%) as New Year's gifts. 39% of respondents consider getting gadgets for their closest family and friends. Thirty percent of respondents buy jewelry, and 22% - books. Also Russians like to give and get presents that have to do either with home and comfort or things that you don’t usually buy for yourself.

✔️Why is this important? Brands on the Russian market need to adapt their goods for the Holiday season and come up with promotion strategies considering the general traditions of gifting. For the fashion and beauty brands this is a great chance to boost their sales by nice Christmas advertising and targeting the right segments of the audience.

And what gifts do you like getting for Christmas and New Year? Are there gifting traditions in your own country?

After a week of sales Black Friday is over and it’s time to make some review ✔️

Yes, you heard it right - in Russia it’s not only Friday for good shopping. Brands start the promotion on Monday and end it on Cyber Monday. As a result, sales are stretched out over eight days instead of one. This year in Russia Black Friday was somewhat different from other years. Here are five trends we would like to highlight:

1) A massive departure of the audience to marketplaces. For example, on Wildberries during the discount period the number of orders almost tripled, in terms of money it increased more than two and a half times, to 43 billion rubles. On Ozon, on the main day of Black Friday, November 26, the number of orders increased fivefold over last year. The sales turnover on that day increased fourfold year-on-year, to 5 billion rubles.

2) Rivalry between the Bachelor's Day (11.11) and Black Friday. The first sale peak on Ozon happened on November 11. On that day, more goods were sold than on Black Friday, amounting to 6.1 billion rubles. On Wildberries, the situation is similar - goods ordered for 89 billion rubles - almost 3 times more than during the same period last year.

3) Expansion of geography from capitals to regions. If previously Black Friday purchases were concentrated mainly in the two capitals - Moscow and Saint Petersburg, this year on Ozon 70% of sales were made in the regions.

4) From offline to online. A trend that flowed smoothly from last year, which began with lockdown, and is gaining momentum with a snowball effect. Shopping centers noted a 24% drop in traffic in Moscow and the Moscow region compared to the 2019 sales. In the regions, this year's Black Friday results were the most modest in four years.

5) New consumption patterns. High sales are shown in household appliances and electronics, cell phones, computers, tablets, laptops, cosmetics, and food. The best sales growth was seen in the "clothing, footwear and accessories" category - 21.5%, followed by cosmetics and health - 12.2%, electronics, technology, computer games - 11.9%, online education - 5.6%.

Draw conclusions and prepare for new holiday campaigns 😉

If you are a fashion brand, get ready for the Black Friday and do it in a smart way. In digital, here is how:

1️⃣ Expand the campaign period. According to Google's research findings, 70% of shoppers start their holiday shopping early to avoid crowds.Use this to set your Black Friday dates, changing offers and attract more people to your business.
2️⃣ Send series of emails instead of just one. Warn the users on the coming sales a few days before the start, remind them of good offers or do segmented mailing. You can make a quest out of your emails and gamify the thing too.
3️⃣ Have a private sale for your loyal customers. Your loyal customers are your greatest strength. They generate a significant amount of revenue and advocate for your brand so Black Friday is the best time to thank them with good offers - this will work great for your sales too.
4️⃣ Use separate strategies for desktop and mobile devices. It’s not a surprise that mobile is a priority over desktop so don’t forget about it during the sales - use different features, recommendations’ set ups and personalization tools.
5️⃣ Update your digital design. Highlight the items you prioritize for the Black Friday, use dark and bright colors to be more eye-catching. Emphasize your best performing blocks for the discount period.

And if you have any questions left feel free to DM us - we are ready to help and answer your questions 👌🏻

❓Black or Green? Should fashion brands boycott Black Friday sales for the sake of responsible consumption or that’s not really a good idea?

In 2019, 450 clothing brands asked their customers not to buy anything on sale on Black Friday. Instead, they suggested establishing "Green Friday," a day of responsible consumption ♻️ Sounds good, but, as it turned out, not for people and not for the fashion brands. In Russia 2020 Black Friday sales demonstrated a very striking trend - growth in demand for clothing from 21% in 2019 to 26% by then. In the rest of the world clothing is the leading category during the discounts. People love this day and depriving them of the unrestrained shopping pleasure is not the best idea. The CEO of H&M, Karl-Johan Persson, believes that the Green Friday campaign for responsible consumption is a danger for the clothing market and the people who work in it.

Being a part of this market and having worked with many fashion brands we can do nothing but agree with Persson. Black Friday is a huge thing for the brands both in terms of finances and audience acquisition. Giving good offers attracts fresh pools of consumers, they get to know your brand and you get new leads to work with in the upcoming year.

Want some tips on how to launch an effective Black Friday campaign? Stay tuned for the next post 😉

Are you thinking of expanding your digital business in foreign countries but the whole process seems overwhelming and too complicated? Do you feel like there is potential for growth but have no idea what to start with? Here we are to give you some hints. Check out our checklist “The steps to enter the Russian market” 🔻

1) Do some market research using the local tools: analyze the e-commerce market volume, the key market players, their advertising activities, the market shares etc. Use Yandex.Wordstat to check the relevancy of your product by search engine queries. Great tools to use are Yandex market reviews or Mediascope and BrandPulse reports.

2) Analyze your target audience by segments: reveal their social and demographic features (pay attention to this because the customer behavior in Russia is very different from it in your country), clarify the platform preferences and user experience features. There are numerous tools and services to use but our favorites are Livedune for throughout SMM analysis, TrendHero for general statistics and competitors’ analysis and Pepper Ninja for parcing audience interests.

3) Find a local partner with deep expertise in your market. Provide them with comprehensive information on your product with details on the possible barriers, plans of growth, advantages and weaknesses of upcoming communications.

4) Determine and set up your key communication platforms: the website, social media and the analytics you’re going to use for tracking. Keep in mind that in Russia digital marketers use Yandex.Metrica along with Google Analytics for better understanding.

5) Shortcut if the website option is not a priority: use marketplaces for a quick start. In Russia this strategy is quite effective with Wildberries, LaModa, Ozon and
Yandex.Market. A localized website is a must, but to save time you might want to launch with a ready to go platform. By Aitarget services you can manage collaborative ads and track your results.

6) Set your goals and build your positioning and promotion strategy around them: social media, performance marketing, offline events, public relations - the “bricks of the wall” need to be firmly connected to each other.

7) Determine your KPIs for every channel: purchases, followers, brand awareness, consideration - make sure the KPIs correspond with your business goals.

8) Launch test campaigns for every channel: be patient and try out different hypotheses. Choose the effective ones and scale up. Don’t forget about in-platform promotions (especially when working with the marketplaces).

Entering a new market is not easy, it takes time, patience and budget, of course. Local expertise is the key! You are more than welcome to apply for our assistance and we’ll save you a great percent of your business resources.

Performance marketing in Russia is built on the analytics of the two most popular services - Yandex.Metrica and Google Analytics. But not all Western companies working on the Russian market use Yandex.Metrica, and in vain! Let us analyze the main advantages of this tool and explain why you need it to assess the effectiveness of digital campaigns.

Yandex.Metrica is a web analytics tool that helps you get visual reports, video recordings of visitors' actions, track traffic sources and evaluate the effectiveness of online and offline advertising.

The main advantages are:

1️⃣ - Russian analytics service, with convenient dashboards, combined with Yandex.Direct and Yandex.Market services. The service complies with all the requirements of European GDPR regulations.

2️⃣ - The built-in "Webview" function allows you to track the user's behavior on the site for the entire time of his stay on it, shows a heat map of the clicks of a particular user and records every session.

3️⃣ - Has all the basic modules for advanced analytics: ecommerce, different attribution models, audience segmentation, allows you to customize reports in different slices, compare segments.

4️⃣ - Sending SMS notifications when the website is down is a convenient option for web analysts and marketers, saving them from the risk of draining the advertising budget and allowing them to quickly fix the website error.

5️⃣ - A nice bonus - the service is absolutely free.

6️⃣ - Easy installation and setup.

Besides the obvious advantages, there is one limitation: if you are running an ad campaign in Yandex.Direct, you can only set up remarketing and dynamic remarketing, as well as use audiences and segments, if you have Yandex.Metrica code on your website.

Share in the comments if you have Yandex.Metrica installed on your site and if you use all the metrics features? And if you need help or advice - please contact us, we are ready to help with the setup.
