A park in a prosperous city is a true luxury, as parks occupy spaces that could otherwise be used to build expensive square meters to rent out or sell. Renewed Museum of Vienna (Wien Museum) is an amazing example of adapting of a modernist building from the late 1950’s to today’s standards. Originally designed by Oswald Haerdtl—the building was carefully refurbished and expanded to meet today’s cultural needs, safety, energy efficiency and accessibility standards while preserving its architectural DNA.

The extension by Certov, Winkler + Ruck adds glass and steel elements that grow organically from the original structure, creating a dialogue between mid-century clarity and 21st-century openness.

The result? A museum that breathes history and modernity at once:
▫️Preserving modernist clean, rationalist lines
▫️Upgrading for accessibility and sustainability
▫️Expanding space for exhibitions, education and socialising (there is above all a nice cafe with a view to Karlsplatz)

Perfect example of smart adaptation instead of brutal demolition — good architecture doesn’t stand still, it evolves.

Innovating through retrofit:
The Austrian Social Insurance headquarters building in Vienna

This office building in Vienna’s 3rd District (Kundmanngasse 21–27), originally built between 1976–1978, underwent a comprehensive retrofit — modernization and adaptation to contemporary standards.

The 1970’s building was refurbished to comply with passive house, low-energy standards. The improvements included photovoltaic installations, open-plan offices, demand-oriented building services, and high thermal performance throughout.

As a result, the building was certified EnerPHit Plus and achieved klimaaktiv Gold (996 / 1000 points) and was recognised by a number of awards:
-Passive House Award — Retrofit category
-State Prize “Architecture & Sustainability” (Staatspreis Architektur & Nachhaltigkeit) — special recognition / exemplary object mention
-Austrian Solar Prize — in the “Solar Construction” category, awarded by Eurosolar Austria.

This is a great example of adaptation and reuse, upgraded to meet the highest modern energy-efficiency standards. Architecturally and in terms of design, the building is also remarkable — featuring rigorous fasades, spacious office areas, and welcoming public spaces at the front, accentuated by striking red modern sculptures.

Vienna’s Seestadt School sets a new benchmark for sustainable learning spaces.

Designed by Karl und Bremhorst Architekten this campus for 1,100 students combines edgy architecture and highly effective renewable energy systems.

Concrete innovation is key: using ECOPlanet low-carbon cement and ECOPact green concrete by .ltd, the building’s ceilings and floors are designed to store heat and cold — turning the structure itself into an energy battery. This concept, together with geothermal pumps and solar panels, allows the school to cover 90% of its energy demand from renewables while cutting construction CO₂ by 32%.

That is a showcase of how smart architecture and sustainable materials create the architecture of tomorrow.

A large increase in the number of cyclists in the past decades dictates the need to expand the infrastructure to accommodate them.
