In the previous post, we talked about the influence of colors on consumer behavior and its psychological underpinnings. Here is an interesting case study presented by one of our researchers at AMD Research.

As a large country, Sudan is well known for its vast cultural diversity. Vivid colors are expressed in women's clothing, house colors, and even local cuisine. Carbonated beverages were not popular among the locals, and sales were at a minimum in these regions. To the researcher's surprise, it was discovered that the only types sold were either caramel dark brown, or colorless. Once other colored beverages were introduced to the market, sales went up significantly. So it wasn't the taste but rather the color that attracted consumers to a highly flavor-dependent product.

Takeaway lesson: Real insights come from market research done properly, and proper market research takes all considerations into account, including cultural, psychological, and even linguistic ones.

The Eskimo have 17 ways to describe the color white. In western cultures, white is also worn by brides, while in Japan, it is used by windows. Colors have psychological, social, and cultural dimensions, and market researchers pay close attention to the effects of colors on consumers' behavior. In an interesting experiment by HubSpot , it was found that adding a red CTA to a webpage increased the conversion rate by 21% than a green CTA. Brands choose their colors to invoke a certain impression on their audience.

The color red of Coca Cola invokes strong emotions of passion and love. Social platforms like LinkedIn and Facebook leverage the color blue to invoke reliability and credibility. Green, on the other hand, communicates environmental awareness and peacefulness. Examples include Whole Foods Market and Animal Planet.

Takeaway lesson: Choose your colors wisely.

When it comes to Coca-Cola, there is more than just sugar and caffeine that gets into your brain.

It turned out that the distinctive colors of red and white of the global brand are recognized by more than 94% of the earth's population and significantly influence people's preferences when it comes to soft drink choices.

In 2004, American neuroscientist and popular science writer Read Montague was involved in a study that examined the human brain's response to sugared drinks. In one scenario, subjects were asked to state their preference for two soft drink options; Pepsi and Coca-Cola without being aware of which was which. In the second scenario, subjects were made aware of which brand was being served.

The results were surprising. In the first case, no preference for either brand was observed, yet when subjects knew which brand they were drinking, preferences for Coca-Cola exceeded Pepsi's by orders of magnitude. This is because brand knowledge is the main protagonist in the brain narrative when it comes to consumer behavior.

Coca-Cola brand positioned itself in the minds of consumers as a drink associated with feel-good memories.

But this ultra-pervasive brand awareness did not happen overnight.

The euphonious name was coined and illustrated by the businessman Frank Mason Robinson, in 1886, who brilliantly combined the two main ingredients in the drink; coca leaves and kola nuts. And being an accountant himself, Robinson illustrated the logo in Spencerian Script which was the standard typeface for business communication.

Since then, red text on a red background or vice versa has become the universal logo for good memories.

Google released 7 Ramadan Personas for marketing professionals to keep an eye on. See AMD Marketing for more information.

We ran a micro experiment on AMD Marketing team to examine their typical Ramadan habits in order to refine the personas provided in the google report and here were the results:
Living with family is the norm (90% of respondents)
Taking part in Iftar preparation is essential, particularly meal preparation and setting the table (72.8%)
Most team members reported decreased or unchanged social media activity (45.4% and 27.3% respectively)
Spending time with family or friends after Iftar is the most sought activity (45.5% and 27.3% respectively)
Constant or increased family visits (45.5% and 36.5% respectively)
However social media remains the most common form of entertainment followed by TV shows (45.5% and 36.4% respectively)
From these six indicators, we added an 8th persona:
Othman The Family Guy.
Othman takes Ramadan as the golden opportunity to spend more time with his family. and help out with the household. He enjoys watching TV after Iftar and going on social media on the side sometimes. Campaigns that leverage family quality time are most likely to gain his attention.

Yet this persona was developed solely based on AMD Marketing team members' responses, and here comes your part. By taking this survey we can either confirm or scrape out Othman the Family Guy and more importantly improve the instrument for further fine-grained segmentation.

When it comes to cross-cultural market research, it is not what you say that matters but rather how you say it. While international market research explores untapped opportunities, missing cultural nuances can quickly snowball into a communication disaster. Regional Dialects, Gender Guidelines, and Sensitive topics are paramount factors that can make or break your research efforts. Know more about the significance of culture in market research design in the article by Greenbook here.
