Did you know that former Watanga FC midfielder Patrick Jackson, who represented Liberia at both youth and senior levels, ended his professional football career in 2011 after suffering a broken leg while Representing Liberia in Ghana against Ivory Coast?
Jackson, once a rising star attracting interest from Asian clubs, sustained the injury during a March international fixture. The setback marked the end of a promising career on the West African football scene.
After the incident, Jackson was airlifted from Ghana’s 37 Military Hospital to Monrovia with help from Andy Quamie, now Liberia’s deputy minister for sports.
The Liberia Football Association never visited him. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Youth and Sports reportedly pledged $2,000 for his upkeep, but only $1,200 was delivered, with the remaining $800 allegedly withheld by the individual tasked with distribution.
The now LFA Vice President Sekou Konneh also contributed $20 toward Jackson’s recovery.
Jackson’s experience raises renewed concerns over the treatment of injured athletes and the role of sports institutions in safeguarding their welfare when careers are abruptly cut short.
