Two authors represented by Rights Brands have been nominated for the 2026 Botnia Prize. Jenni Räinä's historical novel Persecution (Vaino, Otava) and Aapo Kukko's graphic novel The Red Beethoven - A Graphic Symphony about the life of Dmitri Shostakovich are among the eight finalists.
Jury's motivation on Persecution:
“Persecution is a superbly written, coherent and historically accurate novel that immerses readers in the brutal events of the Great Wrath in Ii, Northern Ostrobothnia. This sensory work takes the reader, alongside the protagonist Valpuri, on a harrowing journey of escape through marshes and forests, where they attempt to remain hidden and survive. Surrounded by nature, the characters are anchored in their time and place through folk beliefs. Violence, its consequences and the price of survival take on many forms in the book.”
Jury's motivation on The Red Beethoven:
“Kukko effectively captures the shadows of tyranny through stark contrasts of black and white. The dreams, in particular, powerfully visualise the composer’s fears: a sense of danger and the shadow of a tyrant, verging on a nightmare, are ever-present. The work resonates with contemporary themes of censorship and control, establishing itself as a landmark graphic novel.”
The annual Botnia Prize is presented to a work by an author from Northern Ostrobothnia or living in the region. The winner will be announced on November 7th.
