For families caring for a loved one with disabilities, finding a job is only part of the concern. Having the support to settle in, build confidence and stay employed matters just as much.

Shawn Huang has highlighted recommendations by the Taskforce on Assurance for Families with Persons with Disabilities to strengthen support throughout this journey, following engagements with persons with disabilities, caregivers, employers and community partners.

According to reports, a new Employment Support Office under SG Enable is expected to be fully operational in the second half of 2027. It will provide a central point for career guidance, skills upgrading and employment support, while helping employers create suitable roles and workplaces.

From 2028, persons with higher support needs may receive more intensive job support beyond the usual 12 months, where needed. A new Enabling Employment Grant, expected in the first half of 2027, will also bring together existing grants and broaden support for workplace adjustments, training and other employment needs.

These planned measures are a meaningful step towards helping families face the future with greater assurance. An inclusive Singapore also grows through everyday actionsโ€”an employer willing to adapt, colleagues who offer patience, and opportunities that allow each personโ€™s strengths to shine.

Lower Disability Care Fees and Wider Subsidies Planned by 2028

For families caring for a loved one with disabilities, monthly care bills can be a lasting concern. Government measures to be implemented by 2028 aim to ease that pressure through fee caps, higher subsidies and broader eligibility.

According to reports, means-tested subsidy rates will increase by at least 10 percentage points for most families. The qualifying monthly household income ceiling per person will rise from S$4,800 to around S$6,000, extending support to more households. This refers to income per household member, rather than the familyโ€™s total income.

Illustrative examples show what the changes could mean for four-person households living in HDB flats and caring for someone with higher support needs.

For a household earning S$6,000 a month in total, monthly day activity centre fees could fall from S$210 to S$40. Adult disability home fees could fall from S$3,500 to S$700.

For a similar household earning S$13,000 a month, the respective fees could fall from S$710 to S$400, and from S$7,000 to S$1,600. These are examples of fees after government subsidies; actual amounts will depend on eligibility, care needs and the service used. The revised amounts are planned for implementation by 2028.

For caregivers, more affordable care can mean greater room to plan for the future. Strengthening this support is a meaningful step towards a Singapore where persons with disabilities and their families can look ahead with greater confidence.

Three people were taken to Singapore General Hospital following a fire at Block 479 Segar Road on Sunday morning, 4 October.

SCDF was alerted at about 9.35am. Firefighters found a bedroom in a ninth-floor flat on fire and extinguished it using a water jet. The blaze was confined to the bedroom.

One person from the affected flat had evacuated before SCDF arrived. That person and two others from neighbouring units were assessed for smoke inhalation and taken to hospital. Police and SCDF evacuated about 100 people from the block as a precaution.

Preliminary findings indicate that the fire was likely electrical in origin. A specific appliance or device has not been identified in SCDFโ€™s update.

SCDF reminded residents to avoid overloading electrical outlets, switch off appliances when not in use and replace or repair damaged wires promptly. Batteries and devices should not be left charging unattended for extended periods or overnight.

We wish those taken to hospital a smooth recovery and thank the emergency responders for their work. A quick check of the plugs, wires and charging habits in our homes is a small step that can help protect both our families and our neighbours.

Buying a drink on the way to work is a familiar habit. Remembering to keep the empty bottle, carry it along and find a return machine takes a little more planning.

With Singaporeโ€™s Beverage Container Return Scheme entering full implementation on 1 October, the adjustment now fits into everyday moments: a lunch break, a grocery run or the journey home. The 10-cent deposit is refundable, but returning the container takes time and effort.

For someone buying several drinks for the family, those small deposits add up. Keeping a bag for empty containers and returning them during an existing shopping trip may make the routine easier.

It is understandable if the change feels inconvenient at first. Clear information, reliable machines and accessible return points matter in helping people build the habit.

The aim is to recover more useful materials and reduce waste. As Singapore adjusts, practical feedback and everyday cooperation can help make recycling a routine that works better for everyone.

Defence Minister Chan Chun Sing visited Singapore Army troops at Exercise Panzer Strike in Germany, getting a first-hand look at their training at the Oberlausitz Military Training Area.

In his update, he shared that he tried the Hunter Armoured Fighting Vehicle, watched Leopard 2SG tank crews in action and learned how soldiers are using drones on the battlefield. He commended their hard work in developing the skills and confidence needed for more demanding missions.

This year marks 10 years of SAF training at Oberlausitz. For land-scarce Singapore, access to overseas training grounds gives our soldiers valuable space to practise larger and more complex operations.

Mr Chan also thanked Germany for its longstanding support and hospitality, highlighting the partnership that helps Singapore strengthen its defence readiness.

Behind the peace we enjoy at home are soldiers putting in long hours to stay prepared. Their dedication, supported by sustained investment in training and strong international partnerships, helps keep Singapore safe.

Shared for community awareness.

A passenger has been sentenced to 11 monthsโ€™ jail after punching an SBS Transit bus captain while the bus was moving, according to reports citing the transport operator.

The incident happened on 8 June aboard Service 30. The bus stopped at the passengerโ€™s intended stop, but he did not alight because he was distracted by his phone. After the bus moved off, he demanded to get off along the roadside. The captain refused for safety reasons.

The passenger then punched the captain, who stopped the bus to protect those on board. Police and an ambulance were called, and the captain received medical treatment. SBS Transit announced the jail sentence in an update on 1 October.

SBS Transit and the National Transport Workersโ€™ Union have reaffirmed their support for transport workers and urged passengers to treat them with dignity and respect.

Missing a stop can be frustrating, but violence puts everyoneโ€™s safety at risk. Supporting Singaporeโ€™s public transport workers starts with respecting safety instructions and remembering that the person behind the wheel deserves to return home safely too.

Financial records submitted to the Philippine Senate impeachment court include summaries of remittances from China and other countries to Cale88 Foods Corp., according to House lead prosecutor Gerville Luistro.

Speaking after proceedings on 1 October, Luistro declined to disclose further details, citing the courtโ€™s restrictions on public discussion of the ongoing case and a possible โ‚ฑ30,000 fine. The companyโ€™s records are being examined in connection with allegations involving Vice President Sara Duterteโ€™s wealth and asset declarations.

The companyโ€™s reported connection to Duterte is through her husband, lawyer Manases Carpio. According to reports of testimony from a Securities and Exchange Commission official, Carpio was an incorporator, director and shareholder of Cale88 from 2021 to 2024. Duterte has denied allegations of possessing unexplained wealth.

The reported transfers do not, by themselves, establish that the funds were unlawful or that Duterte personally received them. Their source, purpose and significance remain matters for examination in the proceedings.

Public accountability and a fair hearing belong together. Allowing evidence to be examined carefully, while avoiding premature conclusions, helps protect both public trust and the integrity of the process.

Pink and white flowers are brightening parts of Singapore, with NParks reporting that recent rainfall has brought trumpet trees into bloom.

Known scientifically as Tabebuia rosea, these trees are affectionately called Singaporeโ€™s โ€œsakuraโ€ because of their soft-coloured blossoms, although they are not cherry trees. Heavy showers following a prolonged hot, dry spell typically trigger the flowering. The blooms last only several days before wilting.

According to reports, flowering trees have been spotted along Race Course Road and North Buona Vista Road, and at Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park.

Their distinctive trumpet-shaped flowers measure about 5โ€“8cm long. Even after falling, the blossoms can form colourful carpets beneath the trees, giving familiar streets and parks a different look.

For anyone passing these trees, it is a lovely opportunity to pause and enjoy the scenery while the flowers last. These brief bursts of colour remind us why caring for Singaporeโ€™s green spaces matters: nature can bring a little joy into an ordinary day.

Singapore is focusing on stronger international partnerships, technology and skilled workers to help businesses adapt to a changing global trading environment.

Speaking at the Singapore Business Federationโ€™s Future of Trade Forum on 30 September, Minister-in-charge of Trade Relations Grace Fu outlined how Singapore can remain a trusted business hub while pursuing new opportunities, including in Latin America.

One initiative is the Trade AI Advisor, or TAIA, developed by the Singapore Business Federation with support from Enterprise Singapore. The platform provides real-time guidance to help businesses understand and use Singaporeโ€™s 29 free trade agreements, making it easier to navigate trade requirements and explore overseas markets.

People remain central to these efforts. An upcoming Trade and Investment Competency Framework will provide a structured pathway for professionals to develop and certify their skills, helping companies access trade specialists who understand overseas markets, regulations and changing supply chains.

For Singapore businesses and workers, the message is practical: stronger connections, useful technology and continuous learning can help turn uncertainty into opportunity. Staying open to the world while investing in people remains an important part of building Singaporeโ€™s future.
