THAILAND: A decade ago, Thailand's challenge was building universal healthcare coverage. Today, the challenge is sustaining it.

Our latest piece looks at how Thailand's Universal Coverage Scheme has held up for the past 10 years and what's changed: an ageing population (16% now 65+, up from 10.6% in 2016), a growing chronic disease burden, a shift from ""treat all diseases"" to a more portable ""Treatment Anywhere"" model, and rising pressure on primary care, financing and data infrastructure.

What does this mean for pharma, MedTech and digital health companies operating in Thailand, where regulatory approval and brand reputation are no longer enough, and market access now depends on demonstrating fit within Thai care pathways?

APAC: As populations age and chronic illnesses rise, the need for palliative care is growing across Asia. Yet limited awareness, late referrals, workforce shortages and cultural discomfort around death and dying continue to delay support for patients and families.

It is now essential to normalise conversations around death and dying, so that dying well becomes recognised as an integral part of living well.

MALAYSIA: After a hard day's work at a press conference, the Bridges M&C team gathered for a round of drinks at the Hilton, followed by nasi kandar at Hameediyah.

There was quite a lot to debrief.

Our Account Manager Sarah Selvarajah had moved her car while waiting for press materials to be photocopied, only for a motorcycle to fall on the car that took her original spot.

Regional Account Director Nan Eliana arrived at KL Sentral's arrival hall to find a mat salleh hijacking her Grab. The driver had to circle back, kick him out and pick her up. Imagine this at 2.5x play speed.

The plus? We had more attendees than expected despite one or two cancellations, secured some excellent coverage, and somehow cruised into Hameediyah just before the rush-hour traffic hit Bukit Bintang!

We will take the wins where we can get them. 😆

Malaysia: When it comes to stroke, every second matters. Yesterday, Bridges M&C organised an expert panel media discussion, "Time is Brain: Rapid Action Against Acute Ischaemic Stroke," to raise awareness on the urgent need to recognise stroke symptoms and seek treatment without delay.

Stroke is now the third leading cause of death in Malaysia, affecting nearly half a million Malaysians. Alarmingly, incidence is also increasing among younger adults, including those aged 35 to 39 years.

The discussion brought together Associate Professor Dr Hoo Fan Kee, Consultant Neurologist & Internal Medicine Physician, Datuk Dr Alzamani Mohd Idrose, Consultant Emergency Physician, stroke advocate and survivor Mr Mohd Adnan bin Zambahari, alongside an industry representative, for an insightful conversation on improving stroke awareness, recognising the signs early, and the importance of timely treatment.

The session was moderated by Nan Eliana, our very own Account Director, who kept the discussion engaging and thought-provoking. Swipe through to catch some highlights from the event!

SEA: The MedTech ecosystem in growing rapidly, but survival remains a major challenge for many startups. Unlike traditional tech companies, MedTech startups across Southeast Asia must navigate complex regulatory systems, clinical validation requirements, physician adoption, reimbursement barriers, and highly fragmented healthcare markets.

The challenge often is not innovation itself, but adapting innovation to the realities of regional healthcare systems.

SEA: Thanks to private equity, billions are flowing into private healthcare, but who is really benefitting? Is it the investors or the patients? Private equity consolidation is reshaping hospitals and clinics across Southeast Asia at an unprecedented pace. At the same time, the doctors building these practices over decades are navigating a transition that no one fully prepares them for. We spoke to Dr Gary Ang and Dr Devanath Ragunathan to unpack how private equity is transforming SEA's healthcare landscape and what it will take to get it right.

APAC: Across Asia, rates of short-sightedness are rising at an alarming pace, especially among children and young adults. In some East Asian countries, up to 90% of high school graduates are now myopic, with many at risk of serious long-term eye complications.

Increased screen time, reduced outdoor activity, academic pressure, and prolonged near work are all contributing to what experts now describe as a growing public health crisis.

The good news? Early detection and intervention can make a major difference in protecting long-term eye health.

Business doesn’t always start with talking shop; it often begins with connection.

Bridges M&C founder Nan Eliana first met Dr Azhar Ahmad through two panel discussions she hosted — one raising awareness of a rare form of psoriasis at a media conference in Kuala Lumpur, and another in Singapore involving pharmaceutical professionals navigating upheavals within the life sciences industry.

But it was not conversations about drug pricing or market access that led to an exchange of numbers. Instead, it happened over roti prata (or roti canai, depending on which side of the Causeway one is from) and teh tarik along Joo Chiat Road, discussing people management and what makes a team strong.

A recent meeting in Kuala Lumpur served as a reaffirmation of the values that continue to shape how Bridges M&C approaches healthcare communications and team leadership.

A few reflections from the conversation:

1. Everyone processes information differently, and not every detail matters equally to every role. The difference between someone who excels at their job and someone who leads effectively often lies in how information is communicated. Strong managers know when to zoom out to the bigger picture and when to go into detail — and are able to switch between both with ease.

2. In Southeast Asia especially, relationships are often built by offering something first — whether that is time, perspective, or a useful connection. It signals intent, lowers barriers, and creates trust long before anything is formalised.

3. Do things for others without constantly keeping score. Goodwill rarely pays off immediately, but over time, it may lead to your name being mentioned in rooms and conversations that matter.

4. Surround yourself with people who share your values. When situations become complex and leadership feels difficult, they help anchor your thinking, decisions, and sense of direction.
