APAC: Across Asia, rates of short-sightedness are rising at an alarming pace, especially among children and young adults. In some East Asian countries, up to 90% of high school graduates are now myopic, with many at risk of serious long-term eye complications.

Increased screen time, reduced outdoor activity, academic pressure, and prolonged near work are all contributing to what experts now describe as a growing public health crisis.

The good news? Early detection and intervention can make a major difference in protecting long-term eye health.

Business doesn’t always start with talking shop; it often begins with connection.

Bridges M&C founder Nan Eliana first met Dr Azhar Ahmad through two panel discussions she hosted — one raising awareness of a rare form of psoriasis at a media conference in Kuala Lumpur, and another in Singapore involving pharmaceutical professionals navigating upheavals within the life sciences industry.

But it was not conversations about drug pricing or market access that led to an exchange of numbers. Instead, it happened over roti prata (or roti canai, depending on which side of the Causeway one is from) and teh tarik along Joo Chiat Road, discussing people management and what makes a team strong.

A recent meeting in Kuala Lumpur served as a reaffirmation of the values that continue to shape how Bridges M&C approaches healthcare communications and team leadership.

A few reflections from the conversation:

1. Everyone processes information differently, and not every detail matters equally to every role. The difference between someone who excels at their job and someone who leads effectively often lies in how information is communicated. Strong managers know when to zoom out to the bigger picture and when to go into detail — and are able to switch between both with ease.

2. In Southeast Asia especially, relationships are often built by offering something first — whether that is time, perspective, or a useful connection. It signals intent, lowers barriers, and creates trust long before anything is formalised.

3. Do things for others without constantly keeping score. Goodwill rarely pays off immediately, but over time, it may lead to your name being mentioned in rooms and conversations that matter.

4. Surround yourself with people who share your values. When situations become complex and leadership feels difficult, they help anchor your thinking, decisions, and sense of direction.

SEA: GLP-1 receptor agonists have become key in managing metabolic disease, however rising use raises urgent questions about affordability, access and the future of diabetes care in Southeast Asia.

We speak to Dr Ben Ng and Professor Dr Lee-Ling Lim for more insights into what this means for patients of this chronic disease.

APAC: Drug launches in the Asia-Pacific have a blind spot.

Approval does not equal access, especially in Southeast Asia, where reimbursement, affordability, and local systems determine adoption.

Bridges M&C speaks to former pharma executive turned serial entrepreneur Rei Lim to unpack what is really driving drug adoption across SEA, and why communications should sit at the centre of it.

MALAYSIA: It is not unusual for the Malaysian team to meet over a meal when Regional Account Director Nanny Eliana comes to town, but this time, it is to celebrate Q1’s big wins as well as patting ourselves on the back for making it through 2025!

The pharmaceutical industry experienced significant global shifts last year, resulting in some of our valued clients transitioning into new roles, some outside the industry.

We also saw a few team members move on to pursue personal priorities after several years with us. What remains may be a smaller team, but it is resilient and just as committed to our clients and partners as ever.

But this may not be for long; if the current pace is anything to go by, we may be hiring again sooner than expected. Stay tuned!

SEA: MASLD is rising rapidly, so why is it still so often missed until it’s too late?

Once considered rare in Asia, metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) now affects nearly one in three people in Southeast Asia. Yet, most patients remain asymptomatic until advanced stages, when complications such as cirrhosis begin to emerge.

We sat down with Dr Ganesalingam Kanagasabai and Dr Tan Chi Chiu, to explore the silent progression of MASLD, its link to cryptogenic cirrhosis, and why earlier screening and intervention are critical to improving outcomes.

SEA: Billions are flowing into MedTech innovation, so why do so many startups fail before they scale?

About 60 to 70% of startups don’t make it past their first five years. At the same time, early-stage MedTech momentum across Asia Pacific appears to be slowing, with venture financing and M&A (merger and acquisition) activity down 22% and 37% respectively since 2021.

What’s driving this disconnect between investment and impact?

We spoke to Dr. Jocelyn M.Y. Ng, Paul Lim and Rainier Milante, MD, DPBO to unpack how MedTech startups in Southeast Asia can navigate regulatory complexity and overcome commercialisation hurdles.

SINGAPORE: In a communications landscape where clients often chase the next bright and shiny agency, being invited to a client’s retirement party is rare.

Rarer still is being the only medical and healthcare communications agency in the room, introduced by the leadership as “a long-time, reliable partner for all our medical shows.”

Bridges M&C is proud to have supported Mr Gernot Ringling for 12 of his more than 26 years with Messe Düsseldorf Asia as Managing Director.

From media relations and social media to on-the-ground support at Medical Fair Asia & Thailand, our team has supported him and his communications team every step of the way.

Happy retirement, Mr Ringling!

SINGAPORE: Our Regional Account Directors, Nan Eliana and John Battersby, recently attended Tech Brews' 2026 Kickoff event, “Translating Science Into Access.” It brought together leaders from across Singapore’s healthcare and biotech ecosystem.

Highlights included a keynote by Adj Prof (Dr) Raymond Chua, CEO of the Health Sciences Authority, and a lively panel discussion featuring experts who are driving innovation and growth across Asia’s life sciences ecosystem.

Prof Chua highlighted how the HSA, recognised globally as a leading regulatory authority, has evolved its role from a traditional market access checkpoint to a collaborative partner for medical device and pharmaceutical companies.

For us, this reinforces the importance of clear, credible scientific storytelling that supports dialogue between innovators, regulators, and the wider healthcare community.
