🌎 Happy Earth Day!

In line with Earth Day, we penned a commentary to talk about how rising temperatures will change how we work and live: https://www.channelnewsasia.com/commentary/singapore-hot-weather-rest-break-aircon-night-4277606

In academic circles, you often hear the term 'anthropocene' - how we live in an era when human actions have led to disastrous climate change.

In this piece, we argue that human-made problems need to be paired with solutions that consider human actors. If we don't do so, our plans may backfire.

Warm conditions are expected to persist, but air-conditioning may hurt us in the long run. This Earth Day, consider how people perceive and seek comfort from the heat for solutions too, say Yale-NUS College’s Jean Liu and Nanyang Business School’s Georgios Christopoulos.

Are you happy? The World Happiness Report was released this week, and here's our run-down on the year's report.

• First, Singapore was ranked 30th this year.

There's been much ado about Singapore: (i) falling 5 spots (from 25th last year), and (ii) being the top country in Asia.

However, ranking has 'fudge factors' and isn't written in stone. First, there's some variability associated with sampling - when you select a set of 1000 Singaporeans, you'll find that their responses differ somewhat from a different set of 1000 Singaporeans.

Second, scores between countries are so close that tiny deviations will alter national rankings.

Accordingly, we should take advise from the World Happiness Report's interpretation. For this year, Singapore's ranking is somewhere between 25 to 40 (based on the 95% confidence intervals).

• This year's World Happiness Report also focuses on how life satisfaction changes with age.

In Singapore, we see few happiness-related changes with age. In fact, we have the fewest age-related changes in all of Southeast Asia.

What is behavioral science, and how can it support your organisation's work?

Last night, INSEAD and the Singapore Behavioural Science Network hosted a roundtable discussion on the topic.

We joined the panel and talked about:
• How organisations can craft better policies, products, and offerings when they understand how humans think and behave.

• How behavioral science can be paired with data insights to inform business decisions.

Happy Valentine’s Day! In this write-up for Science Centre, our team explained how love thrives in an online world.

Here’s a few research findings we mentioned:

❤️ Online dating has changed the norms by which we meet partners. In Singapore, a 2021 survey of dating individuals found that 1 in 3 met online - up from 1 in 10 a decade before.

❤️ If you meet on an online platform, do switch readily to an in-person meeting. A large part of a successful match is determined by whether you “hit it off” - the unique dynamics between two people.

❤️ In terms of industry trends, love scams have increased tenfold from one decade ago and need to be tackled urgently. A growing number of apps are also offering video features, networking (aside from romance), and AI integration (eg personalised dating coach).

May you love and live well this Valentine’s Day!

Are you happy in Singapore? 🇸🇬

Recently, the NUS Business School released a report on Singaporeans' quality of life.

We read through the 200-page manuscript and created infographics for the data we found most interesting.

1. First, the report shows that Singaporeans are now less happy than they were in 2016 (according to every metric of happiness!).

2. However, there is hope for improvement. Those who prioritize relationships, accomplishments, and excitement in life tend to be the happiest.

3. Demographically, men, married individuals, and those aged 30-39 reported the greatest life satisfaction.

Higher income and education were also linked to happiness.

🚀 As we kick off 2024, here's wishing you a happy year ahead!

Are you interested in social impact? Check out 'Singapore Impact Tracker' (https://sgimpactstudies.com/) - a new website showcasing stories of programs, interventions, and initiatives that have made a difference in Singapore.

In parliament this week, there's been an active debate on how we can stand in the gaps: leveling the playing field, caring for those in need, and strengthening civil society.

To move in this direction, we need to know what works. That's where the new website comes in.

The Singapore Impact Tracker:
🌟 Has a database of studies evaluating the impact of community initiatives;
👉 Allows anyone to share their impact stories; and
🚀 Provides insights for funders, policy-makers, practitioners, and researchers.

Please help to build the database! If you're a charity, community group, researcher or funder, let us know about your studies by:
• Leaving a link to your website (in the comments or in a message); or
• Filling out a form: https://sgimpactstudies.com/submitstudy/

Let's empower each other to make a difference, one study at a time.
