Singapore has launched its first national research centre dedicated to toxic industrial waste, as it looks to recover more resources and extend the lifespan of Semakau Landfill.

Backed by S$35 million in funding, the new centre will focus on resource recovery, toxic waste treatment and turning the landfill into a future circular economy hub.

The move comes as the city-state reviews its Zero Waste Masterplan after recycling rates fell further from its 2030 targets.
