What we’ve been quietly working on for the last half a year - , a ground-up movement BY parents, FOR parents. A movement aimed at getting parents to shift their focus from pressuring their children to chase straight A’s in school, to helping their kids discover and develop their strengths, interest and talents.
The rate of youth su***de is on the rise in Singapore, and ever since we started work on this, we’ve heard so many stories of children - some as young as 8 years old - who’ve taken their own lives because of school stress and being unable to keep up with their peers. Is this the kind of life we want for our children? Are the A’s and the never ending tuition classes really worth it if we’re raising depressed kids who don’t know how to think creatively and be resilient on their own?
None of us at Life Beyond Grades are saying that studying is unnecessary, or that any kid of enrichment is wrong. But as parents, we need to be more in tune with our children’s needs, their pace of development, and the things that make them happy, curious and loving individuals.
This article is just the beginning of a long journey, a movement that we know will resonate with many parents out there, and hopefully one that helps create a much needer mindset shift in Singapore.
