Shapes, space, and… onigiri?!?

Type Queen Qiu’s parting gift to the team: a type class that broke the concept of type wide open. Across three activities, she walked us through negative space, modular characters, and shape forms; and proved that anything can be a letter if you look hard enough.

A generous lesson from someone who taught us a lot. We’ll miss Qiu!

The Y.OLO Files, Episode 2. Creative jail.

Every studio has one. The extrovert with a deadline, who can’t go ten minutes without finding someone to chat to. Ours is Jonk. She’s our Creative Director. She has a deck due Friday. We’ve been instructed not to talk to her, for her sake and ours.

What’s your office’s protocol for someone in creative jail? Asking for a CD 👀

Confession: we’ve been talking about these five 𝘸𝘢𝘺 𝘵𝘰𝘰 𝘮𝘶𝘤𝘩 in the team Slack. Sharing them here so we can finally shut up about them.

A Catholic podcast that took over TikTok.

A horse logo correction the design world needed.

An agency that renamed itself for its retiring EA.

A trend that won’t stop dunking on millennials.

And the MRT Gala. Yes, that’s what we’re calling it now.

𝑫𝒆𝒔𝒊𝒈𝒏𝒆𝒓 𝑰𝒏𝒕𝒆𝒓𝒗𝒊𝒆𝒘 #5: 𝑫𝒆𝒂𝒕𝒉 𝒐𝒇 𝑻𝒚𝒑𝒐𝒈𝒓𝒂𝒑𝒉𝒚

It takes a kampong to make a typeface.

Death of Typography builds fonts the way Singapore builds anything worth keeping: 𝕥𝕠𝕘𝕖𝕥𝕙𝕖𝕣, and with 𝚌𝚞𝚕𝚝𝚞𝚛𝚎 at the centre.

Getai Grotesk started from the visual language of the Getai stage: signboards, Chinese calligraphic rhythm, and that unapologetic “ʟᴏᴏᴋ ᴀᴛ ᴍᴇ” energy. The idea was always to make a typeface that performs like Getai does: loud, proud, celebratory.

Robusta came from a very different (but equally Singaporean) place: kopi gu you. Designed under DOT’s font incubation programme, it channels that 𝓫𝓾𝓽𝓽𝓮𝓻𝔂 𝓬𝓸𝓶𝓯𝓸𝓻𝓽 and weight: warm, sturdy, and just a little bit rebellious.

And none of it happens solo, with mentors, batchmates, collaborators, and countless rounds of feedback helped take these fonts from cultural references to real, production-ready type.

The Y.O.L.O. Files, Episode 1. Always in the toilet.

Every workplace has one.

The colleague whose bathroom breaks are less “break” and more “extended sabbatical.” Ours is Scott. He’s been in there forty minutes.

He claims he’s working. We have questions.

𝘿𝙚𝙨𝙞𝙜𝙣𝙚𝙧 𝙄𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙫𝙞𝙚𝙬 #4 𝘿𝙚𝙖𝙩𝙝 𝙤𝙛 𝙏𝙮𝙥𝙤𝙜𝙧𝙖𝙥𝙝𝙮

It takes a village to make a font! Meet Death of Typography’s Sylvia and Qiu (and Yen who was in Japan): former NTU schoolmates who’ve built a collective that practises and pushes type design in Singapore through workshops, mentorship programmes, and industry collaborations.

With DOT’s help in production, local typefaces have quietly found a space beyond our shores.

Two of these fonts are featured in our Just My Type project:

1️⃣ Getai Grotesque draws from Singapore’s getai performance culture — loud, committed, built to be seen. This font, made in tribute to this heritage art, was the perfect choice for The Champion.

2️⃣ Robusta is a slab serif with weight behind it. Assertive without apology. Built for those who break rules knowing exactly why. You can see why it’s the font featured in The Maverick.

Take the quiz (link in bio) to find your archetype. 🐙✨

Aaaaaand we’re back with another challenge! This time we have Abi and Qiu, in the hot seat (willingly).

From brand logos to websites and posters, they have designed everything under the sun.

But.... can they design a NEW FONT in 5 minutes? 👀

01/05/2026

We’re kicking off our brand new Y.O series where we put our skills to the test 👀

First up in the hot seat: our designers, YungKev & Abigail 🔥

Can they deliver under the clock?

A space agency that isn’t vanilla.

A river that drew its own logo.

An ad built by hand to look digital.

A marathon you’ve been calling by the wrong name for 22 years.

And Apple, of all brands, leaving fingerprints on the work.
